Epanalepsis In The Book Of Mormon Dec 2023

Epanalepsis In The Book Of Mormon

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Larry Childs (Provo, Utah) has recently completed a valuable study of "epanalepsis" in the Book of Mormon. Epanalepsis is the name of a significant literary device known in antiquity. It occurs where an author repeats certain words in the course of a lengthy sentence, to pick up a previous train of thought after a parenthetical aside or other type of diversion, repeating certain words to remind the reader of the original idea of the sentence. The repeated words in the previous sentence illustrate the point. This technique was noted in antiquity by Demetrius, and it is sometimes called "resumptive repetition."

Iron Sword, Small Silver Scroll From Lehi's Day Discovered

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

A meter-long iron sword has been discovered recently by archaeologists digging at Vered Jericho, three miles south of modern Jericho. The sword dates to the seventh century B.C., during the lifetime of Lehi. "It was in quite bad shape," reports excavator Avraham Eitan in the July/August issue of the Biblical Archaeology Review, p. 33. "I believe that we have the haft and even the tip. The haft is of bronze with some wood remains." This is the first complete sword of this period and of this size ever to be found. "We do know of swords this size from …

Characters On Two Ancient American Cylinder Stamps And On The Anthon Transcript Compare Favorably

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

One of the few systematic studies of the "caractors" of the "Anthon Transcript," as it was known a decade ago, was published by Carl Hugh Jones in 1970 as "The 'Anthon Transcript' and Two Mesoamerican Cylinder Seals." His paper appeared in the Newsletter of the Society for Early Historical Archaeology and is now available as a F.A.R.M.S. Reprint. The author is a museum professional with the Nebraska State Historical Society.

Hugh Nibley Collected Works

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In 1988, the Book of Mormon will be the study course for the L.D.S. adult Sunday School. F.A.R.M.S. feels that it is important that the Hugh Nibley Book of Mormon volumes, several of which are now out of print, should be available as teaching and study helps. Not only do they represent some of the finest work in detailing how the Book of Mormon reflects the culture and customs of the ancient Near East, but also they are written so non-scholars can understand and appreciate the wealth of these details.

Short Notice Recent Research

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In October 1983, the F.A.R.M.S. Newsletter reported the way in which the gates of Shalmaneser Ill (858-824 B.C.), pictured in Yigael Yadin's The Art of Warfare in Biblical Lands 2:399, attests to the practice of cutting off the arms, hands, feet, or other body parts of vanquished enemies. This ancient military practice seems related to Alma 17:39, where Ammon cuts off the arms of those thieves who tried to steal the king's livestock and the shepherds take the arms to the king as a testimony of what has been done. In a recent conversation, John Lundquist, at the New York …

Preliminary Reports Study Multiple Authorship Of Book Of Mormon Texts

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The Book of Mormon, in many places, is textually complex. Careful study of the words and ideas in the book sometimes requires the reader to be sensitive to who wrote the words in question. Occasionally, for example, Mormon quoted the words of earlier prophets directly; other times, he or Moroni abridged or paraphrased those earlier statements. The task of attributing authorship to a particular verse or section can often become an intriguing and rewarding challenge.

Lehi's Trail And Nahom Revisited Dec 2023

Lehi's Trail And Nahom Revisited

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In 1976, Lynn M. and Hope Hilton, In Search of Lehi's Trail (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, p. 94) and Ensign (September-October 1976), proposed that the place called Nahom (1 Ne. 16:34), where Ishmael died and was buried, was around Al Kunfidah near the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Ross T. Christensen, Ensign (August 1978, p. 73), soon suggested an alternative location for Nahom, based upon a map of Yemen prepared as a result of a 1762-64 exploration by Carsten Niebu hr for Danish King Frederick V

Enoch The Prophet

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

A major event last month was the publication of Hugh Nibley's Enoch the Prophet. Enoch's importance in the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha is certainly equaled or surpassed by his central role in the Book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price. He is "the colossus that bestrides the Apocrypha as no other," writes Professor Nibley.

Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan Dec 2023

Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan

Future Journal of Social Science

Reviewing the Western theories and ideologies on building and maintaining peace reflected in the conflict management and resolution in practice always indicates an imperative need for another perspective that could play an integral role in the international society. Regardless of the continuing call for an Islamic contribution in this field on the part of some Western scholars, the Muslim society itself based on a specific culture and a distinctive identity requires a different approach with particular tools that could fit its epistemological model. Exploring this approach, which is the main concern and the main aim of this paper, would never …

Divine Simplicity And Naming God, Michael Martin Dec 2023

Divine Simplicity And Naming God, Michael Martin

Aristos

This essay explores the doctrine of divine simplicity (DDS) within the framework of classical theism, addressing its compatibility with the plurality of divine attributes. This essay outlines classical theistic arguments for God's existence that are essential to understanding DDS, and establishes that denial of either DDS or the proof of God's existence implicitly negates the other. The DDS maintains that God is absolutely simple, devoid of parts, and physical or metaphysical, affirming His utter transcendence. However, this essay highlights certain distinct attributes that can be logically assigned to God, such as goodness, knowledge, and power. Consequently, an objection emerges: if …

Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin Dec 2023

Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin

Aristos

There exists in this life, as a result of our fallen condition, a real temptation to the sin of despair. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate why the theological virtue of hope is utterly essential for the Christian life and beatitude by analysing how it overcomes any and all temptations to despair. In order to achieve this end, this paper first defines what the theological virtue of hope consists of, explaining how it elevates man’s nature so as to desire, efficaciously, his final end: Supernatural beatitude. This paper then defines what exactly despair is, explaining how it results …

How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi Dec 2023

How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi

Aristos

Philosophy is a broad and rich discipline, ranging from formal logic to epistemology and aesthetics. However, in Therapy of Desire, Martha Nussbaum claims that Ancient Western philosophers were largely concerned with the pursuit of human happiness and flourishing; that is, ‘eudaimonia.’ In this paper, Aristotle’s philosophical position regarding the human person will be examined in an attempt to explain how one is able to attain eudaimonia. His treatise on this topic is one that contains many different components but can be drawn back to the central question of ‘what is the telos of the human person?’ and how this …

God As Über-King Of Moral Leading: Veiled And Unveiled, Paul K. Moser Dec 2023

God As Über-King Of Moral Leading: Veiled And Unveiled, Paul K. Moser

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

How can the Biblical God be the Lord and King who, being typically unseen and even self-veiled at times, authoritatively leads people for divine purposes? This article’s main thesis is that the answer is in divine moral leading via human moral experience of God (of a kind to be clarified). The Hebrew Bible speaks of God as ‘king,’ including for a time prior to the Jewish human monarchy. Ancient Judaism, as Martin Buber has observed, acknowledged direct and indirect forms of divine rule and thus of theocracy. This article explores the importance of divine rule as divine direct leading, particularly …

An Aristotelian Model Of Education, Cecilia Hunt Dec 2023

An Aristotelian Model Of Education, Cecilia Hunt

Aristos

This paper explores a model of education that draws primarily on Aristotle’s philosophy and that of Thomas Aquinas. I discuss the way in which Aristotle’s understanding of education has the broad aim of human flourishing. I argue that an Aristotelian approach to education aims to help students to cultivate moral and intellectual virtue and to love learning, thereby helping students to become critical thinkers who know how to think deeply and live well. In this view, since learning is proper to human beings as rational animals, education is intrinsically valuable, not merely instrumentally valuable. For this reason, I suggest that …

Organized Banking Tawarruq: Legal Drawbacks And Practical Solutions, Dr. Mohamed Hassan Abdel-Wahhab

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة

The research starts from what most contemporary jurists have concluded by permitting traditional tawarruq and prohibiting contemporary applications of organized banking tawarruq. The research works to study and analyze the legal drawbacks of tawarruq in Islamic banks in order to confirm or deny them, while trying to find solutions for them that are acceptable for application in practical reality. A number of results were reached, including that the drawbacks of banking tawarruq are: the customer not knowing that he is buying and selling, the customer’s authorization of the bank for the second sale, the lack of arrest, and the harm …

Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel Ballard Dec 2023

Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel Ballard

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents, especially those with a mental illness, often behave in ways judged to be impulsive, overly emotional, and irresponsible (Gogtay et al., 2004; Lawrence et al., 2015; Tamnes et al., 2010). Many teen behaviors which concern adults can be related to underdeveloped skills or competencies, rate of brain development, or expressions of mental disorders (Casey et al., 2011; Serbin et al., 2011; Spear, 2000). Behaviors commonly associated with adolescence, such as impulsivity, risk-taking, and efforts to fit in with peers, are often seen as a serious threat to school harmony, learning, and student safety, necessitating a disciplinary response from school …
