Farms In The News
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. has two orientations: One is to do the academic scriptural research; another is to distribute those results as widely and inexpensively as possible. The recent addition of Sue Bergin to the F.A.R.M.S. staff as Coordinator of Public Relations has enhanced that second effort immensely. Like most people working with the Foundation, Sue puts in long hours as a volunteer because of her love for the scriptures.
Tell Your Story
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
It is apparent that the Book of Mormon means more to us that just paper and ink. This sacred volume has figured remarkably, and miraculously, in the profound spiritual experiences of thousands of people. "This aspect of the Book of Mormons' presence needs to be recorded," says Don Norton, Professor of English at BYU, who specializes in helping people write their personal histories.
Farms Tours
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The F.A.R.M.S. June 1984 Tour to Guatemala and Southern Mexico was the finest Book of Mormon travel experience offered that year. The 1985 tour, departing June 17, for 16 days, will be even better. This unique tour focuses on those sites most likely occupied by Book of Mormon people. The itinerary is spectacular.

A Day And A Half's Journey For A Nephite
A Day And A Half's Journey For A Nephite
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The narrow neck of land is an important geographical feature in the Book of Mormon. For many years people have debated whether the narrow neck was the Isthmus of Panama, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Southern Mexico, or somewhere else. Some have argued that the neck must have been very narrow, because Alma 22:32 says that the distance across the "narrow neck" of the promised land from the east to the west sea was "a day and a half's journey for a Nephite." But how wide could this distance have been? Recently analyzed information suggests that it could have been …

A "classic," by one definition, is a book that will wear you out long before you wear it out. By this standard, the Book of Mormon is one of the classics of all times.
For The Record
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
"For me it became a stimulating task, not only an opportunity to read the Book of Mormon and other Mormon writings," has written Krister Stendahl, Harvard Divinity School, in his Meanings: The Bible as Document and as Guide (Fortress Press, 1984), commenting on his participation in the BYU Reflections on Mormonism symposium.

During the past twelve months, under the vigorous direction of Les Campbell, the F.A.R.M.S. volunteer network has expanded and solidified. Historical Report On April-June 1829 Completed
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The February 1976 issue of Insights gave a short report on the question of how long it took Joseph Smith to translate the Book of Mormon as we have it today. That work began in earnest on April 7, 1829, and was completed by the end of June. A lengthy report may now be ordered chronicling, day by day, a documented history of this intense period of activity. "It is quite staggering," remarks Jack Welch, " when you realize all that was going on in those few days.

Early in his career, Dr. Sidney B. Sperry published a book which offers many fine insights into certain literary aspects of the Book of Mormon, but which has been out of print for several decades. Selected chapters from this book, now available as a reprint (SP-OUR), give "considerable attention to the analysis of the Book of Mormon as a whole and to its constituent records," and makes pioneering efforts to study " the literary forms in this scripture."
The Sacrament Prayers Studies
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Latter-day Saints most commonly turn to D&C 20: 76-79 to find the texts of the sacrament prayers they regularly use on Sundays. In fact, however, the words for these prayers came from the Nephites. In a new report listed on the attached order form, the textual history of the sacrament prayers is studied, from Benjamin 's words in Mosiah 5, to Jesus' words in 3 Nephi 18, to the final texts in Moroni 4-5. " I find it impressive," comments John Sorenson.
