Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Mar 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second function of avenging archeology has been the tearing down of that amazing scaffold of theories on which a skeptical criticism has sought to reconstruct the Biblical narratives according to the blue-prints of its tendential theorization.

Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch Mar 1933

Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The seventh chapter of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians contains various instructions regarding marriage, all of which apparently were given in answer to questions proposed to the apostle by the congregation. After having discussed the question whether it were better to marry or to remain unmarried, the apostle turns his attention to such as have either before or after their conversion been married. He distinguishes two classes: such marriages in which both spouses are believers and such in which one spouse is a believer, the other an unbeliever. His instructions to believing couples, V. 12, we have already considered.

Where And What Is Heaven?, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is not an idle question, as one might be inclined to think upon seeing it in this plain form. Few topics have been the subject of more idle speculation than the question proposed above, particularly on the part of such as are affected by any form of millennialism or some other type of enthusiasm, Hence the double question "Where and what is heaven?" What information does Holy Scripture give us in answer to this question?

Propositions On The Sabbath-Sunday Question, P. E. Kretzmann Mar 1933

Propositions On The Sabbath-Sunday Question, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The observance of one particular day, the seventh day of the week, is not a part of the Natural Law written in the hearts of men at the beginning and later codified in the Moral Law. We have no evidence of a command of God in the time of the Patriarchs, before and after the Flood, by which the Sabbath may be said to have been instituted.

The almost unprecedented amount of discussion which the press of the country allots to the report of the undertaking known as the Laymen's Foreign Missions Inquiry seems to demand that in addition to the brief appraisal of the report in our last issue our journal devote an article to this subject.

The Modernistic Christ, Theo Graebner Feb 1933

The Modernistic Christ, Theo Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The reader of modern theological literature sometimes happens upon a title which possesses significance, not on account of any intrinsic worth as a product of scholarship, but as a typical instance of modern thought regarding the nature of Christianity. From this point of view, Tittle's Jesus after Nineteen Centuries is worthy of more than passing comment. What a subject- the meaning of Jesus and the manifestation of His power in the world to-day! Proceeding from the glorious truth "Jesus the same yesterday and to-day and forever," what cannot be said of the power of the Gospel as manifested in the …

Our Formula For Infant Baptism, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the case of the rite of Holy Baptism the study of the question is complicated by the fact that the rite of confirmation and that of Baptism ordinarily came together, since this was the ordinary form of admission to membership in the Christion Church. We have good reasons, of course, for assuming that the baptism of infants was not the exception, even in the early Church, for children who were born of Christian parents.

Divorce And Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch Feb 1933

Divorce And Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch

Does Divorce on the Ground of Adultery Grant Permission for Remarriage?

The Church of Rome vehemently denies that adultery or fornication severs the marriage bond and grants permission for remarriage. The Council of Trent, in Session XXIV, "On the Sacrament of Matrimony," Canons VII and VIII, has declared as follows: "If any one with saith the Church has erred in that she hath taught, and doth teach, in accordance with the evangelical and apostolical doctrine, that the bond of matrimony cannot be dissolved on account of the adultery of one of the married parties and that both or even the …

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Feb 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

When, at the middle of the last century, the epoch-making excavations in the Mesopotamian Valley lengthened the historical perspective and pushed back the horizon of the ancient Orient, these archeological discoveries were hailed with mixed feelings. An attitude of doubt and suspicion clashed with an exaggerated credulity.

Studies In Eusebius, E. G. Sihler Feb 1933

Studies In Eusebius, E. G. Sihler

Concordia Theological Monthly

Melito, bishop of Sardis, in a letter presented to Aurelius, called Christianity "the philosophy which began under Augustus." (Eusebius, IV, 26.) The narrative about the persecution in Gaul under Marcus Aurelius, in V, is among the most important in the Church History of the bishop of Caesarea, untainted by the flattery of his later references to Constantine. This persecution occurred in 177 A. D., especially in Lugdunum and Vienne on the Rhone. The report given by the churches there, sent to the churches in the provinces of Asia and Phrygia, is the longest citation in the whole history of Eusebius, …
