Missouri's Condition Of Church Fellowship, W. Arndt Mar 1947

Missouri's Condition Of Church Fellowship, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Dr. Behnken, President of the Missouri Synod, had delivered his historic address before the convention of the American Lutheran Conference in Rockford, Ill., November 14, various reactions were voiced in non-Missouri circles. The most notable one which we have seen appeared in the Lutheran Outlook of December, 1946, and was written by the editor, Dr. E. E. Ryden. We believe it will be helpful if we spend a few minutes over some of the remarks of Dr. Ryden to understand his position and to evaluate it properly.

The Practical Application Of Matthew 18:15-18, Walter H. Bouman Mar 1947

The Practical Application Of Matthew 18:15-18, Walter H. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lord Jesus Christ has wonderfully endowed His Church upon earth. To His Church, to the Christians, He has given the power to open and to close heaven, to bind and to loose sinners. And this is no empty gesture on the part of the Lord of the Church, for the Lord Jesus very specifically says: “Verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Matt.18:18. And just as our congregations in their constitutions provide that all things are to be …

Henry The Eighth's Divorce And Luther, William Dallmann Mar 1947

Henry The Eighth's Divorce And Luther, William Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

On June 21, 1529, the King and the Queen of England stood at the bar of Cardinal Campegi, an Italian judge. The Queen appealed to Rome and walked out on him!

The Kaiser “tumed on the heat" and the Pope called the stenchy mess back to Rome and thus broke his papal promise given again and again and again. In other words, he bade Campegi return without publishing the decretal bull declaring Henry's first marriage null and void.

Nothing new. When Benvenuto Cellini rebuked him for breaking a solemn promise, the Vicar of Christ ironically joked he had power to …

Euthanasia, John H. Fritz Feb 1947

Euthanasia, John H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The word euthanasia (eu, well; thanatos, death) was formerly used merely to speak of an easy, painless death. It is now being used in the sense of an intentional cutting short of life in the case of disease, or illness, that may be pronounced incurable and is at the same time very painful-mercy killing. There is little literature on this subject. Consulting a number of encyclopedias, I found that some of them do not consider the subject of sufficient importance and interest to be spoken of at all; even one of the recent encyclopedias does not mention it. And those …

Henry The Eighth's Divorce And Luther, William Dallmann Feb 1947

Henry The Eighth's Divorce And Luther, William Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

“Luther gave the green light to divorce." - Rev. John Toomy in the Jesuit America of August 14, 1943.

“Luther teaches any man who is tired of his wife may leave her for any reason whatsoever, and, forthwith, the marriage is dissolved and both are free to marry again." - Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick O'Hare, D. D., LL. D., in Facts About Luther, p. 333. Pustet, 1916.

It is a rehash of stale stuff. Four hundred years ago, on May 19, 1536, Eustace Chapuys, Kaiser Karl's ambassador to London, wrote Karl's minister Granvelle: “Many think that the Concubine [Anne Boleyn] …

Let's Not Forget The Teacher, Wm. A. Kramer Feb 1947

Let's Not Forget The Teacher, Wm. A. Kramer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In education, as in other pursuits, it is easy to lose oneself in matters of secondary importance. Educators are known to have followed a pet subject for more than a decade, until it seemed that the educational symphony had only one theme. It is enough here to recall the protracted and all-absorbing attention given to methods, tests and measurements, and curriculum revision, each in its turn. Important as these are, the teacher ought to occupy first place in the thoughts of educators at all times, because the success of any school hinges first of all on the teacher. Curriculum, methods, …
