Philosophy pursues a rational explication of our under­standing, experiences, and values in terms of objective truth and reality. Conspicuously, its view of rationality has been rigid and preconceived. Application of this preconceived reason in the explication of the essential features of our world fails and issues in a network of dialectical tangles. These artificially created tangles pose a unique intellectual challenge, but the perennial failure to resolve them limits the intellectual response of philosophers to remaining caught in the tangles, or to taking intuitively favorable sides, or to simply denouncing the tangles as meaningless. Each is understandable.

In Scepticism and Animal Faith, the introductory volume of George Santayana's Realms of Being, Santayana claimed that his system of philosophy would place the common sense of ordinary life into a "more accurate and circumspect form" by distinguishing realms or categories of being which he personally found "conspicuously different and worth distinguishing." He also declared that the "chief issue" of philosophy was to investigate "the relation of man and of his spirit to the universe." The Free RISD! Newspaper was a community-created newspaper meant to take the place of the RISD Extra, a newspaper that itself was published sometime in the late '60s or early '70s, no issues of which exist today. A single issue of the Free RISD! Newspaper is held by the archives; it covers the end of Extra, issues of separation between the RISD museum and its student body, issues of feminism, letters to the editor, a calendar of events, and some advertisements. Higher resolution scans and the physical documents can be requested at the archives.

The issue of March 23, 1970 included some articles about student activism. RISD students demanded an increase in scholarships and a tuition freeze for four years. There was information about the members of the board of trustees. There was a plea to offer 30 full scholarships to needy students from Rhode Island.

This paper will be concerned with the antecedents of Aristotle's bipartite or moral psychology. It will consider two common theses: 1) Aristotle's bipartite psychology is in origin a popular psychology already present (if not clearly formulated) in Euripides' Medea; 2) Aristotle's bipartite psychology developed out of tripartition by collapsing together the two lower elements of tripartition. Roughly, I shall be affirming the first and rejecting the second thesis. In both cases I hope to develop and make more precise the origins of Aristotle's bipartite psychology.

Intellectualism And Practical Reasoning In Aristotle's Moral Philosophy, John Cooper

My aim in this paper is to examine the basis of the dominant scholarly understanding of Aristotle's conception of human eudaimonia. I call this interpretation intellectualist, because it attributes to Aristotle the view that human flourishing consists exclusively in pure intellectual activity of the best and highest kind. I show that the intellectualist thesis, with its grounds, is inadequate. I also show that in the Eudemian Ethics the rejection of this kind of intellectualism is explicit, adopting instead a much more inclusive view of what it is for a man to flourish. Acceptance of Plato's testimony in the Parmenides raises more problems than has commonly been realized. Plato's divinatio may have hit the truth, but to have this confidence involves an act of faith. If anyone wonders what other theory we may put forward regarding Zeno's treatise, he may take notice of the fact that in the Phaedrus Plato mentions Zeno in the company of rhetoricians like Thrasymachus, Theodorus, and Gorgias. In the devising of new methods and argumentative techniques he remains a pioneer.
