This student-run weekly newspaper was known simply as R.I.S.D., or RISD Paper. The RISD Paper ran through the late 1960s and into the 1970s. The issue of January 6, 1971 included an article by Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panthers about Bobby Seale. There were other articles about social, politcal and economic change. Also there was a brief article about Wintersession Committee from a student's perspective.

Known as the Father of French Romanticism, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is noted for contributing much to his time. Not only will he be remembered for being an essayist and novelist, but he is noted as a philosopher and a principal adversary of the characteristics of 18th century philosophy. Rousseau's unique childhood became his own philosophy and in turn the basis of his well known educational theory "retournez, a la nature" the return to nature. Because of this theory and his writings, education as well as literature, were greatly influenced.

John Dewey's Ideas About The Great Depression, Edward J. Bordeau

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Some criticisms that have been directed against John Dewey's political theory reveal a general misunderstanding of his intent. Dewey was quite active in writing, lecturing, and propagandizing during the Depression years. Our primary concern in this article is the role he played in the efforts of the League for Independent Political Action to sponsor a third party from 1928 until the collapse of this project in 1936. Concurrent with this movement is Dewey's work with the People's Lobby in advocating social welfare programs to meet the crises generated by the Depression.

THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY regretfully announces the resignation from its editorial board of Professor ROBERT BLUNK, whose increasing responsibilities as a teacher in the Art Department of Kansas State College, a consultant on numerous art projects, a member of the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission, and a practicing artist have left him, as he feels, with too little time for editorial duties which are growing increasingly heavy themselves. Some concern with music in relation to man's well-being has been evidenced throughout history. Many philosophers have acknowledged that man's ethical and emotional well-being could be influenced by music. On the other hand, other philosophers have asserted that music had no meaning outside itself and therefore could have no significant impact on man. Some philosophers went further by contemplating the sociological implications of music as it relates to man's concept of self and his cognitive reality. Parmenides' Way Of Truth And B16, Jackson P. Hershbell

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

At least three interpretations have been given to B16 of Parmenides' poem. It has been taken for a fragment of his theory of knowledge, of his doctrine of sense perception, and of his views on sensing and knowing. It is usually assigned to the second part of the poem, the Way of Seeming. In this study I will argue that it comes from the first part of the poem, and that it is an affirmation of the close relationship between thought and being.

While Plato's Socrates would deny the description of himself as a meteorosophist on the grounds that the term associates him wrongly with the physical philosophers, Aristophanes' meteora are bodies which metaphorically include all lofty knowledge, both about things and about words. In this sense Socrates and Prodicus are rightly grouped together as meteorosophists at Clouds 361. It is possible to make more use of the Clouds as testimony for Prodicus than has hitherto been seen and to reaffirm Nestle's views concerning the general content of the Horae.

There also were articles about Black art with Barry Gaither and RISD student board and constitution and the Strike Committee. Poems, photos of musicans at the RISD farm, and a calendar of events for RISD students were also included.

Plato, supposedly the father of Western philosophy, has often been presented by certain academicians in an unfavorable light. Although philosophers for the past twenty-five centuries have been writing commentaries about problems that were initially raised by Plato, something of a caricature of the man has been created. For Plato, although acknowledged as a literary genius for immortalizing Socrates, has also been ridiculed for making what seemed to be foolish remarks about the Greek poets and their poetry.
