Hayek's essay 'Why I am not a Concervative' first appeared in 1960 as the final chapter of his treatise, The Constitution of Liberty. Strictly speaking, it was not really a concluding chapter; it was presented as a 'postscript' to the main text-a text whose concern was to articulate and elaborate upon the fundamental principles of classical liberalism. In this postscript Hayek attempted a task which the main treatise did not take up: to explain how the principles of classical liberalism set it apart from the conservatism with which it seemed to have so much in common.

What is the conservative committed to? According to some, the answer is quite simply nothing. Certainly, the argument goes, they are not committed to individual freedom: they defend only order, morality, religion and virtue - all 'traditionally' conceived. So it seemed to many classical liberals, libertarians and 'Old Whigs' in the early 1960s when they denounced traditionalists in the name of individual liberty, private property and reason. And so it also seems to many classical liberals and libertarians today.

Donne's use of the imperative when addressing God in the Divine Poems is a maneuver designed to resolve a particularly Protestant dilemma, the same dilemma confronted by the speaker of Elegy 19 under another guise. As C. L. barber and Richard P. Wheeler have pointed out, the reformers' dismantling of "much of the Catholic apparatus of worship in order to isolate the individual worshiper in direct rapport with God through faith...put worshippers at risk in new ways. In areas where the Reformation triumphed, extraordinary anxiety could be generated by the absolute importance conferred upon the individual's faith in the grace …
The Mystic As Pilgrim: Margery Kempe And The Tradition Of Nonfictional Travel Narrative, James P. Helfers
The Mystic As Pilgrim: Margery Kempe And The Tradition Of Nonfictional Travel Narrative, James P. Helfers
Quidditas
Margery Kempe, fifteenth-century pilgrim and female mystic, stirred up controversy in her own day and continues to do so in the present. This controversy, then and now, centers on both Margery's spiritual life and its social expression. While she was alive, her contemporaries disagreed over the validity of her mystical experience and the way that experience manifested itself; now this conflict continues in contemporary critical debates over the nature of her literary and spiritual significance. The Book of Margery Kempe has heretofore been analyzed as autobiography, mystical treatise, devotional manual, and feminist tract. Clarissa Atkinson, for instance, sees the book …

The Artist As Entrepreneur: Long-Term Professional Bonds In Quattrocento Florence, Yael Even
Quidditas
A number of comparatively recent publications on collaboration in Quattrocento art attest to the renewed interest in reassessing the nature of professional exchange among artist. These studies continue to shed more light on the prevalence and extent of collaborative artistic undertakings in Florence during this period. Originating in archival research, the studies reject the romanticized, traditional view of Early Renaissance painters, sculptors, and architects as solitary geniuses, suggesting instead that these creative talents operated as entrepreneurs who collaborated to establish profitable careers.

Moral Lessons For Women Readers Of Jean Lemaire De Belges's Les Illustrations De Gaule Et Singularitez De Troye, Judy Kem
Quidditas
Jean Lemaire de Belges (1473-1525), poet and historiographer of the French and Burgundian courts of the early Renaissance, wrote his epic history of Troy, Les Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513), at the request of his patron, Margaret of Austria, to offer an "occupation voluptueuse, et non pas inutile" [sensual yet useful occupation] to the ladies of France (1:11). Lemaire dedicated each of the three books of his epic to a different noblewoman. Mercury, who narrates the prologues of all three volumes, identifies each noblewoman with one of the three goddesses of the Judgment of Paris: Margaret of …

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann
Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis is a response to Aldo Leopold's 1949 call for a new, wholistic environmental ethic. Leopold's call stemmed from his concern over the increasing degradation of the environment as a result of a utilitarian approach which judges nature as good only insofar as it is good for human economic and recreational benefit. This thesis is aimed at the development of a wholistic, non-utilitarian environmental ethic grounded in the philosophy. of Immanuel Kant. The thesis begins with a brief review of the utilitarian environmental ethic which Leopold opposed and some of the consequences it has wrought in the natural world. …

Belief And Rationality, Curtis Brown, Steven Luper-Foy
Philosophy Faculty Research
We have gathered here a collection of papers at a point of intersection between epistemology and the philosophy of mind. The essays in this collection illuminate the bearing of issues about rationality on a variety of themes about belief, including the relation of belief to other propositional attitudes, the nature of the subjects who have beliefs, the nature of the objects of belief, and the ways in which we attribute content to beliefs.
The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin
The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
My intention in this paper is to explore some of the implications of the fact that the fifth century sophistic thinker Antiphon entitled his main "sophistic" treatise, published in two books. Truth (Alêtheia). As in the case of Protagoras' treatise of the same name, this title may be understood as an indication that Antiphon is responding to Parmenides' "Way o f Truth" and is affirming his own view of the truth about the world, that physis is more real or truer than nomos, or in other words, statements are true if and only if they correspond to physis, but not …
Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman
Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
I propose to examine on this occasion three closely related issues in the interpretation of Plato's metaphysics, the separation of Forms, participation, and the nature of particulars. In the compass of this talk, I cannot do justice to all three of these issues, indeed probably to none of them. A fortiori, I cannot do a semblance of justice to the closely related topics of predication, both ontological and linguistic; the status of Aristotle's remarks about Plato's metaphysics and his own treatment of these issues, or the vexing problem of the development of Plato’s thinking. Nonetheless, I cannot avoid these topics. …
How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91
How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91
Honors Projects
In his book The Structure of Empirical Knowledge, Laurence Bonjour criticizes advocates of externalist versions of foundationalism. According to Bonjour, "externalism reflects an inadequate appreciation of the problem at which it is aimed."l With this in mind, Bonjour sets out to argue that externalism is not an acceptable theory for the foundationalist to appeal to in his attempt to solve the regress problem. In order to avoid a complete stalemate over doctrine, Bonjour's attempt to argue that externalism is unacceptable proceeds as an appeal to intuition. As such he allows that"although this intuition may not constitute a conclusive objection to …
