(1992) Talking Reality, Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp

Introduction: Sometimes I wonder how I ever got here. Other times I wonder what I'm doing here. Then I remember what happened and say to myself, "You don't come from here. You know you come from somewhere else. And soon you will be leaving here for good."

Edward Ii And The Tactics Of Kingship, Carolyn P. Schriber Jan 1992

Edward Ii And The Tactics Of Kingship, Carolyn P. Schriber

Quidditas

Edward II (1307-1327) succeeded to the throne of England at a crucial time. In 1307 England was at war with Scotland and faced threats of further trouble in Wales and Gascony. In addition his father had left him a debt-ridden country in which the barons were beginning to recognize their potential for governmental control through financial blackmail. The country's finances were overextended, but the baronage and clergy had been resisting royal demands for increased taxation. If Edward II were to continue his father's policies and pursue the war in Scotland, as the barons wished, he would be forced to give …

Macintyre's Nietzsche: A Critique, R. Kevin Hill Jan 1992

Macintyre's Nietzsche: A Critique, R. Kevin Hill

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In Alastair MacIntyre's "After Virtue", Nietzsche is presented as (1)an emotivist, (2) the culmination of the liberal tradition, and (3) fundamentally opposed to Aristotle. All three claims are criticized, thus casting doubt not only on MacIntyre's interpretation of Nietzsche, but also on his larger account of the history of Western ethical theory and practice, as well as on his proposal that we return to the tradition which Nietzsche has called into question.

Paternalism: A Search For Acceptable And Applicable Principles Of Intervention, Jennifer L. Browning

Honors Projects

At seven-thirty-one A.M. on Saturday morning I am awakened by a phone call from mom, "Oh honey--it's a beautiful sunny day that knew you wouldn't want to sleep through. Now that you are awake go outside and breathe the morning air....No, no, that's ok, I'll wait...you go ahead and do that.." After I breathe and get mom off the phone I reach over and turn on my stereo. As New Age music fills the room I remember when my roommate switched the George Winston music I fall asleep to with a subliminal weight-loss tape. (I lost five pounds that week--gained …

The Sounds Of Music: First Movement, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1992

The Sounds Of Music: First Movement, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In his essay "Understanding Music," Roger Scruton has argued for a nonreductionist approach to aesthetics, emphasizing the contextually rich language and grammar that structure discourse about various forms of art. This accords with Wittgenstein's series of "reminders" about the importance of finding philosophical footholds in ordinary language. However refined artistic taste and aesthetic judgment may become, their fundamental source is in ordinary discourse about what surprises, pleases, and moves us. In what follows I will try to amplify these remarks and map the outlines of a conceptual investigation of the grammar of musical understanding. I will be less interested in …

Silence (And Its Voluble Partner), Andrew Taylor Jan 1992

Silence (And Its Voluble Partner), Andrew Taylor

Research outputs pre 2011

Silence may traditionally have been golden, but how is it valued today? Can it survive the impact of a technology which can, and does, bring the apparently irresistible seductions of noise to the remotest parts of the world, and which invades the most reclusive aspects of our lives? And what place has silence in a culture such as ours which classifies it as "unproductive"?

But what is silence anyway?

Professor Taylor considers two ways in which, from the Romantic period onward, silence has been conceived. One tradition equates silence with Truth itself; the other considers it the condition which enables …

The Myth Of Retributive Justice, Brian Slattery Jan 1992

The Myth Of Retributive Justice, Brian Slattery

Articles & Book Chapters

In fairy tales, villains usually come to a bad end, snared in a trap of their own making, or visited with a disaster nicely suited to their particular villainy. Read a story of this kind to children and you will be struck by the profound satisfaction with which this predictable of events is greeted. Yet, if children cheer when the villain is done in, they are just as satisfied when the hero manages to get the villain by the throat but takes pity and spares him. These tales of retribution and mercy, even reduced to their barest bones, seem to …

[Introduction To] Heidegger And The Earth: Essays In Environmental Philosophy, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 1992

[Introduction To] Heidegger And The Earth: Essays In Environmental Philosophy, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Bookshelf

Though each essayist presents his or her thinking as it has arisen out of the texts of Martin Heidegger, as this brief overview surely makes clear, the thoughts a reader will encounter here are diverse and perhaps at points conflicting. However, the essayists' differences in many cases actually grow out of a common sense, namely, a sense of urgency born of the knowledge that for many regions of the earth and for many of the beings within them time is running out. The book itself, including its conflicting assertions, is the embodiment of a kind of anxiety and a kind …

Asceticism/Askēsis: Foucault's Thinking Historical Subjectivity, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 1992

Asceticism/Askēsis: Foucault's Thinking Historical Subjectivity, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In the Introduction to The Use of Pleasure Foucault calls his work an askēsis, "an exercise of oneself in the activity of thought." The "living substance of philosophy," Foucault writes, is the essay, "which should be understood as the assay or test by which, in the game of truth, one undergoes changes, and not as the simplistic appropriation of others for the purpose of communication." Foucault's work, then, does not simply report to us his conclusions or theories. Foucault is not primarily interested in imparting information. What he offers instead is a kind of exercise book.

Guilt As Management Technology: A Call To Heideggerian Reflection, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 1992

Guilt As Management Technology: A Call To Heideggerian Reflection, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Martin Heidegger was born in 1889 in Messkirch, Germany, a small town in the Black Forest. He died in 1976. As these dates indicate, Heidegger lived through a time when Western civilization was undergoing a series of upheavals probably now only dimly imaginable to those of us who are the products of them. His life spanned a technological revolution that changed even the most basic patterns of human (and certainly not only human) life in the industrialized world.

A Chaotic Approach To Free Will And Determinism, Gregory J. Till Jan 1992

A Chaotic Approach To Free Will And Determinism, Gregory J. Till

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This paper approaches this ancient problem by incorporating the new science of chaos. Chaos is the name given to the discovery that even "simple deterministic systems with only a few elements can generate random behavior" {Crutchfield et al., 46). Chaos shows that deterministic systems can act in ways which are not predictable while at the same time showing that many seemingly random phenomena are more explainable than once thought. By doing so, chaos alters the laws of causation upon which much of this debate rests and indicates that perhaps not all theory is against freedom of the will, despite Dr. …

The author's introduces this sequel to his Morality, Politics, and Law as an extended gloss on John Noonan's statement that the "central problem of the legal enterprise is the relation of love to power." The renown of its author ensures that Love and Power will become a focal point in legal academic discussion of its central concern: the proper relation between morality, particularly religious morality, political choice, and public deliberation "in a morally …

Deaths Of Art: David Carrier's Metahistory Of Artwriting, Gary Shapiro Jan 1992

Deaths Of Art: David Carrier's Metahistory Of Artwriting, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This essay is a critical examination of David Carrier's Artwriting (1987), which offered a philosophical account of the implicit strategies of narrative and presentation deployed by a wide range of art historians and critics. Here, this author raises some questions concerning Carrier's attempt to describe or define a genre of 'art-writing' distinct from philosophical aesthetics; he also discusses Carrier's views in the context of those writers whom Carrier examines in Artwriting.
