Development, Ethics And The Ethics Of Nationalism, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In a world which exhibits so much power and yet does so little to drive back underdevelopment, it is not to be wondered if the thinking endeavour is shrouded with the impression of being confronted with the greatest enigma, with the most disconcerting sphinx of all times. However, concerning this most pressing and controversial issue of underdevelopment, of all the disciplines which study man, philosophy is the one which until now said the least. Is this due to simple insensitiveness, or to pure neglect, or to the feeling of not being directly concerned? Whatever the reasons may be, the simple …

Review Of Kenneth Baynes, The Normative Grounds Of Social Criticism: Kant, Rawls, And Habermas (1992), Harry Van Der Linden Jan 1992

Review Of Kenneth Baynes, The Normative Grounds Of Social Criticism: Kant, Rawls, And Habermas (1992), Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Baynes's two main objectives are to show that Kant, Rawls, and Habermas share the view that "the idea of an agreement among free and equal persons [i. e., autonomous persons] ... constitutes the normative ground of social criticism" (p. 8), and that this "constructivist" view is more adequately developed and defended with each successive theorist. The study, however, goes beyond these aims and can often fruitfully be read as a comparative study of Rawls and Habermas.

A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Collectivism-Individualism Paradigm: The Influence Of Confucian Values On The Conflict-Handling Behavior Of Male Graduate Business Students In Hong Kong And The United States, Randy Ki-Kwan Chiu

Dissertations

Problem. The Collectivism-Individualism literature argues that there is a difference in the way that Americans and the Chinese handle conflict based on differences in culture. It is also speculated that these differences have been influenced by Confucian values. However, these positions have not been conclusively supported by empirical findings.

Method. Both the Chinese Value Survey and Thomas and Kilmann's Management-of-Differences Exercise were administered to 124 U.S. White American graduate business students and 142 Hong Kong Chinese graduate business students. Three null hypotheses were formulated. These hypotheses stated that there is no linear combination of Integration, Human-heartedness, Confucian work dynamism, and …

(1992) Countering Prejudice With Counterexamples, Philip C. Guin Jan 1992

(1992) Countering Prejudice With Counterexamples, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

In this chapter I show that sensitivity to the rule of contradiction can be useful in the lives of children, especially in combating prejudice and discrimination, because it encourages children to seek counterexamples to universal judgments. I argue that sociological models that attempt to delineate the roots of prejudice can be complemented by an understanding of the rule of contradiction. I further argue that the pedagogical forum best suited to promoting sensitivity to the rule is the community of inquiry, in which counterexamples stand as the most forceful devices challenging cherished beliefs and opinions.

(1992) Thinking For Oneself, Philip C. Guin Jan 1992

(1992) Thinking For Oneself, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

Thinking for oneself is the product of community effort rather than an individualized achievement. Therefore, attributing thinking for oneself to an individual entails acknowledging the community of inquiry to which she or he belongs. In this chapter I discuss a sample of how children often view thinking for oneself, a contrast between thinking for oneself and thinking, the notion of a community in making thinking for oneself possible, and whether thinking for oneself should be an educational objective. I make intermittent reference to Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery in an effort to unpack how thinking for oneself is used in the novel.
