Challenges For Compatibilism, Kenton Machina
Challenges For Compatibilism, Kenton Machina
Faculty Publications - Philosophy
In order to show that persons can be morally accountable even though their choices are at least potentially explainable in a scientific way, the standard compatibilist position holds that causal determinism is compatible with some type of freedom or autonomy moral responsibility requires. This paper shows that even if causal determinism is indeed compatible with that sort of freedom, that cannot prove contemporary scientific explanations for choices are compatible with moral responsibility. In other words, this paper argues that much of the debate over free will, autonomy, and determinism cannot establish compatibilism. Recognition of this point leads us to seek …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
For all the angry rejection and amused disinterest she received from Americans then, Frances Trollope, in the view of SUSAN S. KISSEL, masterfully discerned much of the American character that remains as true today as it was in 1832. Associate Professor of English at Northern Kentucky University, Kissel has published a number of articles on Frances Trollope and other British and American writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her book, In Common Cause: The "Conservative" Frances Trollope and the "Radical" Frances Wright, was recently published by The Popular Press of Bowling Green State University.

Not long ago the walls of the world's great art museums were covered with realist portraiture, landscapes, and sacred scenes. That was pretty much the extent of canvas art. During the last hundred years. However, the scope of museum collections has become much more diverse. One can still find a lifelike portrait by Rubens, an idyllic landscape by Constable, or a sublime Christ scene by Raphael. Indeed, there even seems to be a bias towards realist and, what the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty called the "objectivist" prejudice.1 It is as though we expect art to function as a description …

In the early 1840s Henry David Thoreau stopped paying the Massachusetts poll tax. When pressed for payment in 1846, he invited arrest and went to jail. He had wanted to protest his state's complicity in the federal government's support of chattel slavery and its policies towards Native Americans. By the time he delivered his lecture on civil disobedience, in 1848, events had produced another cause. Thoreau also condemned this country's expansionist war against Mexico.

The Power And The Promise Of Ecofeminism, Reconsidered, Elizabeth Mayer '94
The Power And The Promise Of Ecofeminism, Reconsidered, Elizabeth Mayer '94
Honors Projects
Ecofeminism is one of the newest varieties of feminism, and it seems to be one of the brightest. There's something appealing in combining feminist and ecological concerns, and something positively seductive in the implied possibility of one big solution out there somewhere that will end not only the oppression of women but the abuse of nature as well. There seems to be something right about ecofeminism too: it points out that our culture has formed a conceptual association between women and nature which certainly does seem to exist and certainly does seem to have undesirable consequences. And it points out …

Ecofeminist Practice And Theory: The Empowerment Of Women In Kenya, India And The United States, Latisha Ann Campbell
Theses & Dissertations
This thesis demonstrates that ecofeminism is a new feminist theory and discusses the implications of ecofeminism's rejection of dualistic thinking. It also explores the relationship of ecofeminist theory and practice to women's empowerment. Chapter One defines feminism and ecofeminism and determines the place of ecofeminism in relation to existing feminist theories. Chapter Two describes three women's environmental movements, the Green Belt Movement of Kenya, the Chipko movement of India and the Women's Pentagon Actions in the United States. Chapter Three discusses the contributions to ecofeminist theory of Wangari Maathai, Vandana Shiva and Ynestra King. Each of these women is associated …

Effects Of Soluble Calcium-To-Protein Ratio On Age Gelation Of Ultra, Je Hong Ryue
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) retentates were ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed and compared for storage life at room temperature. Viscosity studies indicated that UHT-treated, RO retentate delayed age gelation longer than UF retentate at the same total solids level (26% TS). When compared at 6.4% protein level (2x RO vs 2.7x UF where x=ratio of the feed volume to concentrate volume), the storage life for both RO and UF retentates was about 6 to 8 months.
Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and disodium phosphate (DSP) at 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20 mM concentrations were incorporated prior to UHT processing …

'Turnabout Intruder' Turned About Or What Became Of James Kirk And Janice Lester, Donald W. Viney
Faculty Submissions
The last episode of the classic Star Trek series, "Turnabout Intruder" can serve as a thought experiment to raise anew the philosophical question about the relation of mind and body. The writers of the episode present the case of the "life entity transfer" between James Kirk and Janice Lester as a question of minds switching bodies, but another view is possible: perhaps the two become temporarily confused about who they are.

Intentionality And Isomorphism In Aristotle, Christopher Shields
Intentionality And Isomorphism In Aristotle, Christopher Shields
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper I investigate one central source of Aristotle's dissatisfaction with a comprehensive analogy between aisthêsis and noêsis. I will argue that his conception of nous as organless is neither empirically motivated nor obviously misguided. On the contrary, Aristotle's insistence that nous is separate and unmixed with the body is grounded in an approach to intentionality nascent in his treatment of noêsis. This approach to intentionality helps motivate the special status he awards nous.
Aristotle On Good And Bad Actualities, Owen Goldin
Aristotle On Good And Bad Actualities, Owen Goldin
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
This paper is a discussion of one of the more neglected passages in the central books of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Θ 9 105la4~19. In this passage Aristotle makes some assertions concerning relations that hold among potentialities and actualities, both good and bad. These assertions seem to be made as an afterthought, and their relation to the analysis of potentiality and actuality that precedes is unclear. I shall argue that in this passage Aristotle is in effect providing a metaphysical foundation for the normative component of a teleological analysis of composite substance. I consider certain difficulties in reconciling the text with the …
Change And Contrariety: Problems Plato Set For Aristotle, Charles Young, James Bogen
Change And Contrariety: Problems Plato Set For Aristotle, Charles Young, James Bogen
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Plato's views on change and contrariety arise from concerns about definition and explanation in the aporetic Socratic dialogues that find more systematic analysis and resolution in the more constructive dialogues that follow. After developing these concerns, analyses, and solutions, we sketch Aristotle's quite different treatment of the same and other related issues.

Nationalism, both fashionable and deadly once more, is THERESA M. MACKEY's subject as she examines the writings of James Joyce. Rather than anti-nationalist, Mackey finds the later Joyce committed to a position akin to modern radically nationalist republicanism. Professor of English at St. John's College in Annapolis, Mackey is here publishing her first scholarly essay.
DOROTHY DODGE ROBBINS recounts the journey of Stephen Dedalus in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist and how it fits the typology of such adventures in ancient and modern literature. Robbins is a doctoral student at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

The Role Of Laughter In The Thought Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul D. Gerdes
The Role Of Laughter In The Thought Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul D. Gerdes
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The objective of this thesis is an analysis of the role of laughter in the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), by which I mean both its influence on his intellectual development, and the incorporation of it in his philosophy. Such an undertaking is important because, while it might seem somewhat odd for a philosopher, and particularly a German philosopher, to consider laughter fundamental to his thought, laughter does play an essential role in all of Nietzsche's writing.
For the purposes of this thesis, I will investigate three separate but interrelated aspects of Nietzsche's thought: the influence of the Dionysian tragic-comic …
