The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces Jan 1996

The Semblance Of Ideologies And Scientific Theories And The Constitution Of Facts, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Responding to those who want to consign ideologies to the dustbin of history, I make what is perhaps an unexpected connection between ideologies and scientific theories to ward off what may amount to be an assault on the former's cognitive value. Although there are significant differences between ideologies and scientific theories, particularly in terms of objectivity and openness to innovation, I find that they are similar insofar as each is a cognitive fund which allows us to make sense of the world that we live in. Part of the sense-making quality of scientific theories is that they allow us to …

Human Kind In Literature: The Ideals Of Fiction - The Fiction Of Ideals, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1996

Human Kind In Literature: The Ideals Of Fiction - The Fiction Of Ideals, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

The prophets of suspicion have done their work. Ours is a time of profound skepticism and open cynicism with respect to both the profession and promise of ideals. Too often in the name of some seemingly worthy ideal, we have been led individually and collectively to the deepest and most devastating evils. Religious ideals of the sanctity of life and universal charity sour into zeal and foster self-righteous exclusion and persecution of the non-believer; political ideals of social and economic freedom calcify into operational ideologies which justify enslavement and genocide; moral ideals which acclaim a healthy community authorize censorship, repression, …

Gestalt Shifts In Moral Perception, Peggy Desautels Jan 1996

Gestalt Shifts In Moral Perception, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Moral philosophers often assume that there are clear and unambiguous single descriptions of particular moral situations, and thus they view their primary task as that of determining the most moral action to take when in these situations. But surely there is less chance of there being a single and final way to describe a given moral situation than there is of there being a single and final way to organize and describe a visual display. Although we perceive many of our day-to-day moral experiences in an unreflective and even reflexive manner, it is also possible for us to (and we …

(1996) The Practice Of Philosophy In The Classroom, Laurance J. Splitter, Ann Margaret Sharp Jan 1996

(1996) The Practice Of Philosophy In The Classroom, Laurance J. Splitter, Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Philosophy for Children is at once strongly child-centred and highly teacher-sensitive. It encourages students to delve into, and build upon, ideas, concepts and problems that they themselves choose as both interesting and, in some sense, important. Yet it is the teacher who, at least in the first instance, must encourage her students to talk and to listen, who must weave into a coherent form their disparate thoughts and ideas, and who must exemplify modes of thoughtful and reasonable behaviour.

(1996) John Passmore: On Teaching To Be Critical, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 1996

(1996) John Passmore: On Teaching To Be Critical, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

"What," asks John Passmore, "is it to teach a child to be critical, and how can we tell whether we have been successful in doing so?" Notice the phrasing of Passmore's question: his concern is with being critical--that is, with being a critical thinker qua being a person of a certain kind--rather than with (merely) thinking critically. Part of the answer, then, is implicit in the question itself: to be critical is not a matter of being informed, or of blind habit, or even of skill (although he does not altogether deny the skills component). It is, chiefly, an attitude …

Book Review: The Price Of A Dream: The Story Of The Grameen Bank And The Idea That Is Helping The Poor To Change Their Lives, Rory J. Conces

A simple logo, a red and green arrow, is commonly found on buildings in villages and cities scattered across the South Asian country of Bangladesh. The logo, as unpretentious as its creator, signifies the presence of one of the many offices of the Grameen Bank, a credit institution founded in 1976 by the charismatic economist Muhammed Yunus. The history of the Grameen Bank, and of how the bank has worked to alleviate poverty through an innovative entrepreneurial approach to development in one of the poorest nations in the world, is the subject of David Borstein's readable and often entertaining book.

(1996) Young Children's Moves: Emergent Community Of Inquiry In Early Childhood Discourse, David K. Kennedy Jan 1996

(1996) Young Children's Moves: Emergent Community Of Inquiry In Early Childhood Discourse, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

When children as young as four converse in groups, and when some structure is provided by an at least moderately skilled facilitator of dialogue, that critical, creative, and collaborative kinds of thinking happen more or less spontaneously, and that there is an emergent structure of argument, which forms the horizon of every critical discussion. My assumption is that it is in the nature of language as a logical and communicative structure that when we talk, and especially when we collaborate in talking about one thing over a number of turns, we spontaneously make at least some of the moves of …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DAVID D. COOPER explores the generational storms that swept across university campuses in the 60s-70s and now the 80s-90s and the meaning of a liberal arts education in response to the values articulated by today's students. Associate Professor of American Thought and Language at Michigan State University, Cooper has written half-a-hundred articles on American literature and culture, literary theory, educational philosophy, psychology and religion, composition studies, literacy, and the philosophy of values. Author of Thomas Merton's Art of Denial: The Evolution of a Radical Humanist (University of Georgia Press, 1989), Cooper's next will be "Amending the Heart: An Essay on …

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski Jan 1996

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The focus of this paper is to attempt to analyze how, in Kierkegaard's paradigm of what constitutes "a self", the representations of the phenomena change in the eyes of the perceiver from a state of "no self" - lacking this consciousness and active engagement of spirit-, to the moment of existential arrest, to a state of being "a self" - new and ever-growing consciousness as a result of this arrest. The primary source for this endeavour is Kierkegaard's text, The Concept of Anxiety. Methodology for this endeavour will involve explication of the text itself with nuances from other post-enlightenment literature …

Even Friends Cannot Have All Things In Common: Aristotle's Critique Of Plato's Republic, Christos C. Evangeliou Dec 1995

Even Friends Cannot Have All Things In Common: Aristotle's Critique Of Plato's Republic, Christos C. Evangeliou

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle considered as the core of Plato's ideal polity the proposal of communism in its double form, community of women and children and community of property for the guardians who, thus, would be able to provide the means to achieving the perfect unification of the state. Aristotle objected to these innovations and came out as a defender of common sense and common Greek political practice. His arguments were intended to show not only the impracticability of Plato's proposals and their incompatibility with common Greek practices but also their undesirability. He believed that, human nature being what it is, a political …

Material Alteration And Cognitive Activity In Aristotle's De Anima, John Sisko Dec 1995

Material Alteration And Cognitive Activity In Aristotle's De Anima, John Sisko

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In this paper, I would like to sketch my account of the relation between cognitive activity and material alteration within Aristotle's psychological theory. I will begin by suggesting a new framework through which to view the important issues (§2). I will then show that on Aristotle's account material alteration is required both for any episode of perception in animals taken generally (§3) and for any episode of thought in human beings (§4). Finally, I will examine Aristotle's rationale for supposing that material alteration is required for human thought (§5).

Plato's Theologia Revisited, Gerard Naddaf Dec 1995

Plato's Theologia Revisited, Gerard Naddaf

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The word theologia is attested for the first time in Plato’s Republic II, 379a4: Hoi tupoi peri theologias. According to Werner Jaeger (The Theology of the Early Greek Philosophers, Oxford 1947, 4-‐13), Plato coined the word to support the introduction of a new doctrine which resulted from a conflict between the mythical and the natural (rational) approach to the problem of God. For Jaeger, the word theologia designates what Aristotle was later to call theologikê or “first philosophy (hê protê philosophia) – whence his translation of hoi tupoi peri theologias by “outlines of theology.” Victor Goldschmidt, for his part, in …
