Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon Design In Practise [Sic] Within The City Of Perth, Anastasia C. Bradley

Theses : Honours

This thesis outlines an investigation of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon Design that identifies the mechanisms of power which are found to be inherent characteristics within new surveillance technologies. The study includes a discussion of the Perth City Council's implementation of the surveillance program in October 1991 including a detailed analysis of the cultural centre public space. Material provided by Gerard Martinet from the City of Perth, and the Security Industry helped establish a factual ground to form the basis of the investigation. I have sourced a number of academic texts from university libraries, particularly Murdoch University, Curtin University and The University …

The Consolation Of Philosophy, Heather Springgay Jan 1996

The Consolation Of Philosophy, Heather Springgay

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

The general situation and theme within Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy, and the Phaedo, contain striking similarities, but even more striking are the differences that redefine Boethius' work. The Consolation presents a work that in its basic text describes the time before Boethius' execution, while the Phaedo examines Socrates before he is put to death. In each work similar discussions on death and dying are presented. These aspects of the works, however, are where the similarities end. Instead, by placing Lady Philosophy in Socrates' position, the reader is able to examine the Phaedo as a dialogue on the life, death and …

(1996) Pixie Meets The Pre-Socratics, Philip C. Guin Jan 1996

(1996) Pixie Meets The Pre-Socratics, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

There is a relation between the development of early science and philosophy and the cognitive needs of children. Both operate with a paucity of experience, both are hypothetical and conjectural and both have the capacity for critical self-correction—the former in sensitivity to its tradition and the latter, insofar as children have access to a community of inquiry. Pixie, then, is an ideal forum for the introduction of science and philosophy in a manner similar to that in which it occurred in the Greek tradition, providing, along the way, the newness and freshness of discovery and invention.

(1996) Education For Global Citizenship, Philip C. Guin Jan 1996

(1996) Education For Global Citizenship, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

There is plenty of enthusiasm for the idea of global citizenship. There is in fact ample support for education to promote global citizenship, judging by large sections of school supply catalogs, their programs, films and books proudly and handsomely displayed. Columbia Teachers College has a program, as does Montclair State University, and our doctoral program at Iberoamericana includes a course entitled Education for Global Citizenship. All the more reason why the words of detractors seem so stark and peevish - especially those of many conservative political opponents who shower disdain on globalisms of any sort, for example, on the 1995 …
