A musical score prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music degree.

The work was begun in September of 1951, and was completed in April of 1962. It is cast in three movements: fast, fugal style; slow, a variation-rondo; fast, sonata form. A closely knit structure is achieved through melodic and rhythmic relationships throughout. Thus, the second theme of the last movement is derived from the opening theme of the first movement; subsidiary material from movement one appears again as developmental material in movement two; the first phrase of the opening these in movement one is …

It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine the contributions which the use of recorded music may make toward the fulfillment of the objectives of elementary school music education; (2) to determine the directions of musical growth to be fostered through, and some valid teaching principles relative to music listening activities in the elementary school classroom; (3) to make suggestions as to the teaching techniques and the organization of the selected recorded materials which may assist the classroom teacher in promoting a climate favorable to the development of maximum musical growth in each student.

This composition for orchestra was performed as a ballet under the title "Big Top" with the Modern Dance Group of College of the Pacific on May 24 and 25, 1951. The orchestra for the performance was made up of two pianos, a banjo, tympani, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, two trombones, and tuba. In this final setting a larger orchestra is involved.

The piece was cast in sonata allegro form because of the principle of contrasting themes and thematic development which characterizes this form.. I wanted to present two very contrasting moods, one of primitive brutal force, the other …
