For centuries, female composers have struggled for recognition in a male-dominated field, and those who did publish were typically in privileged positions. However, in recent years, more efforts have been put forth to uncover these unsung heroines; anthologies of women's music have been curated and analyzed and continue to bring awareness to the works of these amazing women. These are necessary contributions, but there is still a void to be filled, particularly regarding women from the United States in the early twentieth century. Throughout history, music has been employed in storytelling. By presenting a story in musical terms, composers can bring stories to life, creating auditory atmospheres which connect the listener to the story in a deeper way. One medium composers have done this through is program music, a musical genre which seeks to tell a story through music in association with a descriptive title or short program, relying on the imagination of the listener instead of spoken word or visible action. This paper explores the ways in which the culture surrounding pop music superstar Taylor Swift is a religion. Taylor Swift has had an indelible impact on her fans, who are known as Swifties, and this paper brings attention to the ways that she establishes a strong connection with her fans such that they come to view her as a religious figure. Definitions of religion proposed by scholars Clifford Geertz and Meghan Johnston Aelabouni are used to analyze how this popular music culture can fit into a broader conceptualization of religion.
