The purpose of this study is to set forth the idea, already conceded generally, that Shakespeare was a supreme dramatic artist; that he became supreme through creative genius that affected all that came under his magic hand; that the purpose of his creative efforts was to produce a poetic, or dramatic, illusion. And the focal point of this paper will be that the ghost in Shakespeare was, in his own mind, as much his own creation as was any other dramatic device he used.

The present study proposes to fill this gap in our knowledge of Marlowe’s attitudes by an objective study of the relationship between elements in his diction and the principal language movements of his time. Since these movements are all characterized by innovations of words, word-meanings, forms, and functions, our study resolves itself into an examination of such innovations in the language of Marlowe.

I have endeavored in this thesis to create a greater appreciation for the artistic vales found in the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. I have attempted to accomplish this by first presenting a background which consisted to the lives of the two great collaborators, Sir Gilbert and Sir Sullivan. My next step was to relate the stories of the operettas and interesting information concerning each. As a final step I took the important dramatic elements which should be contained in a good drama and showed how they were applied in developing the librettos.

To the writer of fiction who has his ear to the ground, the recent multiplication of books in Indian fictional literature in the Southwest offers both a hint and a challenge. For years the growth of Indian fiction in the Southwest was slow and its product unimportant, and this in spite of the fact that excellent examples were set by both Helen Hunt Jackson and Adolf Bandelier . Perhaps the primitive mind was thought too rudimentary for the complex psychological studies popular in the closing years of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.

The purpose of this study is to determine the tendencies of contemporary women poets as to verse, form, rhythm, and meter. The study was based on the 1936 publication of Henry Harrison's Contemporary American Women Poets. None of these poems had appeared in any other anthology. It was made up from books printed by thirty-nine publishers and two hundred nine periodicals.

The purpose of this study is to touch upon these sources only briefly and to consider in some detail the likenesses and differences of four selected versions written since the invention of the printing press. Especial emphasis will be given the handling of the three chief characters: Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot. As prescribed by the law of widowhood, a twenty-seven years’ old woman had begun its hindoo-like observance by seclusion, - a seclusion which only death, forty years later, would break. Seldom after this event was the four-year old boy, Nathaniel Hawthorne, to have any close family ties with his bereaved mother whose husband died at sea. It was the beginning of events and factors which were to overshadow Hawthorne’s attitudes and reactions to womanhood, and which would ultimately be cast in his novels.

My purpose in selecting Vergil’s tragedy of Dido as a thesis topic was to present this story from a different point of view than it is usually considered. A great deal of material has been written on various aspects of The Aeneid, but very little work has been done with the Dido episode, at least considering it as an exemplification of the characteristics of Greek tragedy. The late Thomas Hardy once remarked that there were only two great things in the United States: what he called our "recessional buildings", and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Such praise of Miss Millay's work is proof that she has reached an enviable position in twentieth century li­terature. To our way of thinking such approbation from the late dean of modern novelists exceeds even the honor of winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1922 with the poem, The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver.
