A Critical Study Of The Browning-Wedgwood Letters, Alma Augusta Shaffer

In 1864, three years after the death of his wife, Robert Browning engaged in a correspondence with Frances Julia Wedgwood, an intellectual spinster of thirty. Miss Wedgwood was a woman of distinguished ancestry, being a descendant also of Sir James Mackintosh, and a relation by marriage of Charles Darwin. Miss Redwood had long been an admirer of Browning's poetry. She herself had written several novels, so it was natural that sooner or later an occasion should arise when she and Robert Browning would meet.

During the school year of 1936-1937 I became intensely interested in the study of the Chivalry as brought out in Dr. Harrison's graduate course on The Arthurian Legend.  I was curious to know how Sir Walter Scott, with some of whose novels and poems I was acquainted, had used the chivalric ideal in his work.  Out of that curiosity grew the desire to study further the chivalric ideal and its relation to Scott.  The result of my study of the past year is the survey following.

Interest in the death theme has been pronounced all through the ages because the subject is of such vital importance to man. Poets and writers have expended their best literary efforts in treating death in its every aspect. The purpose of this thesis is to study in particular, a certain group of poets commonly spoken of as The Graveyard School. Their poetry on death will be treated in such a way as to show the hopelessness and pessimism of the various writers.

It is one purpose of this paper to analyze the diction and syntax, in an attempt to establish the characteristics and peculiarities of the language. The analysis will be extended. Where did Synge acquire his powerful, flexible, and lilting dramatic cadence? The impish George Moore says that Synge listened to Ireland, "like a hare in a gap." ¹ Certainly the folk speech of peasant Ireland influenced the poetry of the plays. There are other influences too; and those this study hopes equally to explain.

This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part tells about the European homes of my parents and about their coming to Kansas. The second part is about their marriage and moving into Hodgeman County where they and other Mennonite families formed a Mennonite colony. Various pioneer experiences are recounted. The third part tells about the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma Territory and my parents moving to the Strip to take up pioneer life farther south. Within the last half dozen years there has been a revival in the writing and production of historical plays. The purpose of this thesis is to show how theatre-critics react to the outstanding plays of this type which, incidentally, nearly monopolized the boards for this period. This reaction is gauged by a study of criticisms published in a New York newspaper, two professional theatrical magazines, two non-professional magazines, and a religious magazine. The purpose of this thesis is to discover how con­sistent the treatment of the character of Thomas a Becket by three authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries -- Douglas Jerrold, Alfred L. Tennyson, and T. S. Eliot--is with the historical figure of Saint Thomas.

The method pursued in discovering this is first, to establish the historical figure of Thomas through the use of authoritative historical sources and second, to discuss how his figure is revealed in the plays, "Thomas a Becket" by Douglas Jerrold, "Becket" by Alfred Tennyson and "Murder in the Cathedral" by T. Philosophy tells us that many arguments and seeming differences of opinion may be avoided if the parties involved would simply define the terms of the question under discussion. It will, perhaps, be well then to follow this advice in the treatment of our subject which is Nature as it is found in eighteenth century English poetry. Just what terms then must be defined or made clear? Nature as it is expressed in poetry must be defined, but along with it must also be defined, if possible, the two rather ambiguous terms classicism and romanticism. Thomas Moore started writing at an early age. His parents were extremely interested in their son's education and consequently had sent him to school as soon as possible. At the excellent grammar school which he attended young Thomas was well-versed in the fundamentals of grammar and of writing besides being taught and reminded never to neglect the habit of rhyming. To these practices he was ever afterwards indebted and before his fifteenth birthday two of his lyrical verses were printed in a popular Dublin magazine.
