A consideration of the attitude toward English culture in Irish literature necessitates an understanding of the conflict of the two cultures: the conflict of the Anglo-Saxon race with an Irish race; the conflict of a Protestant culture with a Catholic culture. A critical appreciation of this conflict covers eight centuries with scarcely a suspension of twenty-four hours, may be gained by taking a dispassionate view of history of both countries; by realizing what both have achieved; and speculating intelligently on their future.

In writing this play, I have tried to avoid the emphasis usually placed upon Billy the Kid. Most of the books and articles on the Lincoln County War have dealt extensively ( and without too great a regard for the truth) with his exploits, and there seemed little to be gained in re-telling the story from the same old angle. It appeared to me that a far more promising field was the one offered by the Spanish-American element in Lincoln and the effect of the war upon them: hence the decision to make Ygenic Salazar my pivotal figure.

In view of the number of vocabulary tests that have been made in recent years and the resulting widespread use of estimates based on them, the question of whether or not a reliable absolute estimate of a person ' s vocabulary can be made from existing tests is of paramount importance . Before attacking the problem, it was necessary to define "an individual's vocabulary." Any facts or details that might be given concerning the personal relation between two poets whose lives ran closely side by side, whose environment was practically the same, although they reacted to that environment entirely differently, and from whose works we have derived pleasure or profit, can not but be interesting.  This conviction induces me to present a consecutive account of the development of the relation between Byron and Shelley, and to correlate the several interests that occupied their thoughts.  I have endeavored to portray them, not just as two poets, but as citizens of the actual world.

Philosophic Trend Of American Negro Poetry, George Stevens

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1939, traces the philosophic trend in American Negro poetry from 1761 to the contemporary period, examining the shift from an idealistic, religiously grounded poetic sensibility toward a naturalistic worldview. Drawing on primary poetry collections, anthologies, and critical studies of Black American literature, the thesis divides its analysis into three literary-historical periods: the Early Period (1761-1865), the Pre-Renaissance Period (1866-1899), and the Renaissance Period (1900 to the time of writing).
