A Study Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Howard E. Sylvester

The general aim of this study of Gerard Manley Hopkins is to add to the limited amount of knowledge concerning a poet whose influence within the past twenty years has been considerable. A corollary purpose of this paper, therefore, is to investigate and clarify some of the metrical experiments and practices of Hopkins. Critics, touching upon the verse-technique of Hopkins, have been cautious in their approach to his particular experiments in "sprung" and "counterpointed" rhythm. Various casual writings upon Hopkins have called attention to the poet's peculiarities of syntax, but the nature of these peculiarities has not been carefully or …

Robert Ramsay in his Short Stories of America has mapped out the United States in twenty- five literary groups . He has left without sectional designation a strip through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and has shaded it on his literary map of local color regions as "neutral". In reviewing sixty-seven volumes, ranging from six hundred and twenty to eight hundred and twenty-five pages, of Littell's Living Age, which extracts verbatim from British periodicals and newspaper, and in reading various works of American and British authors, literatures, histories of the period involved, and early magazines and periodicals, I have found material pertaining to the subject under discussion that would fill a good sized book. Therefore, having only limited time and space, I shall give the opinions of British periodicals and newspapers that are to be found in Littell's Living Age.

An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. Edwin Arlington Robinson is generally acknowledged to be particularly the "poet of failures". His poems deal preeminently with the problems of men and women who err through their various limitations, and who usually err tragically. Since this is true, it is necessary to survey briefly, and attempt to classify, the materials from which the analyses for this study will be drawn. Such a survey will follow immediately in a subsequent chapter.

For several reasons Dos Passos is important to the development of American literature. His novels, with their integrity, breadth, and architectonic form, are painted on a larger canvas than any other American writers. In Manhattan Transfer, his fourth novel, he attempted to portray the greatest metropolis in the world, New York City. He succeeded as well as anyone ever has. Then, refusing to rest on his cars, he went on to the trilogy U. S. A., which takes all of twentieth century American life as its subject.
