The nineteenth century critics appraised Shakespeare's heroines by standards different from those of the twentieth; consequently the two ages reached different conclusions. The purpose of this paper is to point out just what these differences are.

A paper of this scope had to be narrowed in some ways. Otherwise a formidable array of heroines would have been enumerated, but little depth of research could have been shown. Therefore, it is the main purpose of this thesis to arrive at some conclusions in regard to one aspect of cowboy fiction - the cowboy novel. In the main, this study will attempt to place the cowboy novel in its proper position in American literature, While doing this, it will try to show that there are two distinct schools of cowboy novels - the romantic and the realistic; and that of these two schools, the realistic tends to produce novels of a higher literary quality.

The purpose of this thesis is to make a comparative study of the treatment of Joan of Arc in selected literary works to determine how far and in what ways interpretations vary according to the spirit of the age and the author's own particular interests and biases. It will be shown that the author's dominant purpose in writing and the reasons for his interest in Joan do affect his presentation of her to a large extent. It is the purpose of this study (1) to look at a representative sampling of Mark Twain criticism and see to what extent Twain was considered a social satirist, (2) to look at Twain's own works and determine whether or not he was a social critic, (3) to see how far he carried his social criticism, and (4) to note the purposes for which his social criticism was employed.
