This study is intended to serve two ends. First, it will supply a much needed study of the critical ideas in Peacock's novels which will be useful in itself. Peacock was an extraordinary individual: he was acquainted with most of the major literary and political figures for more than half of a century; he enjoyed a position of public trust which gave him a role as an empire builder; and he had a flair for expression that makes his keen observations a pleasure to read. This study of E. E. Cummings poetry will consist largely of an examination of those qualities of his verse which are peculiar to it, which particularize it as the work of one post. The particularities of Cummings verse are, however, of a dual nature--at once experimental and traditional. Most frequently the experimental aspects are grounded in some tradition, and as a rule his best verse reveals little of the eccentric manifestations of the experimental and reflects an individual yet traditional style.

General cultural knowledge of the present day includes legends of diverse origin and content. The legends date from many different levels in the growth of civilization, but they persist because in some way they seem to satisfy basic needs of the cultures through which they exist. Eventually they become separated from the specific location, incident, or time which gave them birth and are assimilated into the popular imagination. Legends change as the cultures in which they persist change and as they are used by the writers of literature for either entertainment, didactic, or symbolical value. So many volumes have been written about this sensational playwright that one hesitates to add to the number. it is, however, remarkable that no one to my knowledge has ever made a complete analysis of Shavian women, their problems, and Shaw's view of their true position in society. Joseph McCabe has pointed out, "How the most characteristic feature of Shaw's revolt, and the one most scantily treated by his biographers, is his position in regard to woman and the family."

The problem undertaken by this study is an investigation of the use of folk materials by Benét, and the values to be observed in such a use. From the evidence to be assembled here, it is hoped to create firmer ground for a final estimate of that author's worth. It is a problem which does not call for an analysis of the writer's entire range of powers, or his lack of them. It does, however, seek to contribute something in one particular field which otherwise might, for a time, be overlooked.

Dr. Samuel Van Pelt, Class of 1875, was the oldest living alumni at the time of this recording. He received a BA, MA, and DD from IWU and was a Professor of English and Oratory (1877-80) as well as the Librarian (1877-79); he was also an active member of the Methodist Church. He died in 1953, but a scholarship established in his memory exists today.

The vast body of Milton scholarship is rich in studies of Samson Agonistes. Almost every imaginable facet of the work has received careful consideration: its biographical significance, its historical backgrounds, its link to Greek tragedy, its Hebraic source and inspiration, its structure, language, and verse forms, Throughout the critical examinations of the play, references are frequent to Aristotle's Poetics, particularlyto Milton's interpretation of the Aristotelian katharsis and to the quantitative parts of tragedy as applied to Samson Agonistes. The emphasis has been upon Milton's indebtedness to Greek tragedy, however, rather than upon his debt to the Poetics. This paper is …
