Poetry and romance in Shakespeare's non-historical plays have come into their own again with revivals of The Tempest directed by Margaret Webster and with the production of As You Like It, which features Katherine Hepburn. Unfortunately, the time limit of this paper has been set for the end of 1950, so it is only possible to mentin in passing Laurence Oliver's and Vivian Leigh's exciting and unique idea of presenting Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternate nights. One of the most fascinating aspects of any poet is his conception of his art. Many poets have written extensively on the theory of art around which they orient their poetry. Others have clearly revealed their theories by writing criticism of other authors. Emily Dickinson, however, left no critical essays, no elucidation of her artistic principles. It is quite probable, indeed, that she did not consciously concern herself to any extent with poetic theory. Graham Greene did not receive serious critical attention as a novelist until the publication of Brighton Rock in 1938. Even then, because he chose to subtitle it an "entertainment" many critics refused to consider it a serious novel at all, although it treats of evil working through a boy. Anyone who reads Brighton Rock immediately after "entertainments" such as A Gun for Sale or The Ministry of Fear cannot help noticing a deepening awareness of values in the author.

Although Alfred Tennyson ls not one of the great dramatists of English Literature. I feel that a study of his historic trilogy is worthwhile and beneficial. Probably we shall never understand completely the mystery of his turning to the form of the drama at the age of sixty-five. We can, however, recognize his growth and development in this field of literature and perceive hie political fervor and religious opinion from the trilogy.

The purpose of this work is to present a study of Tennyson's trilogy demonstrating the degree of dramatic development he achieved.

The author wishes to acknowledge his debt to Cervantes. The original inspiration for "The Man of Glass" came from "El Licenciado Vidriera", one of Cervantes' "Novelas Ejemplares". Though not following the great Spanish writer's plot exactly, the author has tried to approach his spirit and theme. If a great deal of "El Licenciado Vidriera" has been lost, the author hopes that some little something has been added.
