Lord Byron was very much concerned with the problems of immortality and fame. Perhaps his greatest single theme in poetry is human greatness. An especial aspect of human greatness, namely of heroes in spirit and in action, is, of course, one of the most permanent and best known features of Byron's poetry, the creation of the Byronic hero" being one of the poet's most outstanding contribu- tions to world literature. A basic premise of this paper is Hemingway's definition of bullfighting as a tragic art form. Americans have been so conditioned to view any sort of contest as sport that it is virtually impossible for us to consider the bullfight in other terms. Once accepted as tragedy, however, the implications of the bullfight as an influence upon Hemingway become manifold. Emily Dickinson's protagonists, when they are most moving and have the greatest complex reality, are caught between the agony of death and the agony of life. Analogous terms are non-being and being, renunciation and experience, unreality and reality, sterility and fruition, extinction and redemption. Renunciation is a major pattern, but in the act of renunciation the Dickinson protagonist may be discerned grasping for fulfillment. Similarly, when she strains toward fulfillment, she can simultaneously yearn for negation. Her reaching two ways at once is manifest in her qualifications. The so called "Restoration period" in English literature stands as an age of comic production that ranks as one of the most brilliant in the history of the English stage, second perhaps only to the preceding Elizabethan period. Restoration comedy has been famed for its indecency and immorality, and critical Judgment has always been influenced by concern over the "excesses" which the playwrights introduced into their works.

Among the cultural forces of growing influence in America is the increasing scholarly and literary attention being given to the native American art form, Jazz. This dissertation will illustrate that Jazz owes its recognition to American literature and that all genres of the literature of Jazz have adopted an attitude of Liberal Romanticism in their treatment of Jazz. This attitude is in keeping with the outlook developed by the musicians themselves.

"Antony And Cleopatra" And "All For Love": A Comparison, Josephine Stewart

The study of Antony and Cleopatra and All for Love was made for the purpose of comparing an Elizabethan drama with a neo-classic play of the Restoration period. Reference was made to the history of the chief characters, and sources of the common plot were examined. Analysis of plot structure of each work furthered the comparison. The central characters as pictured by Dryden and Shakespeare have been contrasted. Comparison of a well-constructed play of the seventeenth century and a masterpiece of the Elizabethan era confirms in the mind of the writer the universal appeal and preeminence of Shakespeare.

An author's work is generally colored by the presence or the lack of religious convictions. The poetry and prose of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow indicate a deep-seated faith in God. Although this faith is most clearly manifested in the works of the man, its source is found in the life and character of the poet himself. It is the aim of this paper to discover the various contributing factors, to ascertain their effect upon the poet and his writings, and to draw certain conclusions concerning his religious faith.

The Whalley Abbey compoti provide a particularly fruitful field of study since a rather considerable body of documents from this Cistercian monastery have been preserved and a large number of these documents have already been published.

The aim of this study has been to collect all the available bibliographical and biographical data about Wallace Gould in an effort to estimate the nature and significance of his poetry. The focus of the paper is on the shaping forces of the poet's inspiration, and dI have attempted to show how the background and experience of the man have influenced the scope and material of his work.
