Orwell is painfully aware of almost all the difficulties under which the present day writer labors. These range from the squalid reality of poverty (espeoially true in his own case) to a serious uncertainty over the nature and purpose of literature. A Comparative Analysis Of The Characters Of Two Dramatic King Lears : Shakespeare And Bottomley, Doyne Joseph Mraz

It has been the purpose of this study to make a comparative analysis of the most significant characters in two selections of dramatic literature: Gordon Bottomley’s King Lear’s Wife and William Shakespeare’s King Lear. The significant characters are Goneril and Regan, the “evil influence” in both plays; the two Lears, the “neutral influence” in both plays; and Hygd and Cordelia in King Lear’s Wife and King Lear, respectively. Hygd and Cordelia are the “honorable influence” in the stories.

It has been the further purpose of this thesis to delete from both plays all subplots which do not directly pertain to …

Al though a major part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis and evaluation of a particular work of narrative literature, it is obvious that such an analysis presupposes the existence of a general theory of literature. A critic's theory of literature determines, to some extent, the kind of criteria he may use to evaluate a particular work. In addition, the theory of literature held by the critic may have a direct influence upon his system of analysis. To better accomplish my objective--to show form in Wolfe's novels--I have related form to the portrayal of loneliness because loneliness is the central theme of the novels. In other words, I have attempted to show how he modified his style to reflect the mood of loneliness. These modifications are shown in terms of plot structure, plot rhythms, and the resolving forces. Within the resolving forces, I have sub-divided resolution into resolvement by time, philosophical resolvement, and poetical resolvement. In the literary tradition of sixteenth-century England, a new mode of expression arose with the development of formal satire. The pattern branded off into two directions: that which followed the Piers Plowman tradition in the mid 1500's and that which followed the classical models of Horace and Juvenal in the last decade of the century. The latter phase led so inevitably to repercussions among literary and political circles that public authorities had to intervene to stop the flow of libelous satiric literature. Due to the controversial nature of the classical phase, it is this tradition which I shall concentrate on. …

One of the most controversial editors that ever worked in Kansas was E. Haldeman-Julius of Girard. It is the attempt of this work to follow the works of this writer, editor, and publisher from his first beginnings with struggling Socialist newspapers until his death In 1951. A background of his early life in Philadelphia is not neglected. The author was fortunate in that the library of Kansas State Teachers College contains many of the late publisher's works which were the principal sources of information for this paper.
