This multi-phase dissertation explores the role of agency and participation in the successful implementation of adaptations for disability. Utilizing an online survey examining the ways people acquire and adapt assistive technologies as well as a series of comprehensive collaboratively constructed “Adaptation Stories,” it examines the acquisition experiences of a sample of those who rely on adaptations and assistive devices.

Quantitative analysis of survey data suggests significant correlations between overall satisfaction with feelings of functional efficacy, overall satisfaction with involvement, overall satisfaction with perceived receptivity of the team, functional efficacy with involvement, functional efficacy with receptivity of team, as well as …

This list was formed in 1999 and steadily grew into a major venue for building simulation community announcements, discussions, and questions and answers (Q&A). This paper presents an analysis of the Bldg-sim email archive to determine how traffic has grown over the years and what general trends have come and gone in this particular user community. Construction workers are exposed to extreme conditions over a large portion of the work day during the different seasons of the year when working on construction sites. Some studies have discussed the effect of seasonal timing of work-related injuries and concluded that more injuries occur during the summer months [1]. Other studies concluded that accidents are more likely to occur during rainy seasons [2]. Construction accidents data from 2004 to 2011 were obtained from the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI). Surgeons endure a significant amount of mental stress while operating in complex and intense surgical environments. In the United States, most operating rooms are windowless spaces that rely on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation. Surgeons spend much of their day in these surgical environments with little access to exterior views or daylight. There is a growing body of occupational health research that supports the therapeutic benefits of views and daylight in various non-surgical work environments. It is reasonable to consider that windows in operating rooms may mitigate surgeon mental stress and consequently improve surgeon occupational health.

More than three million Americans experience homelessness annually. Emergency shelter capacity is limited while local governments are unable to provide even temporary housing. Informal housing involving interim self-help solutions are now popular adaptive actions for obtaining shelter, despite nonconformance with city codes. Unfortunately, most informal solutions have resulted in objectionable tent cities and squatter campgrounds where the local response has simply been to move the problem around. Our homeless transition village plan prototypes a shelter-first solution using a kit-of-parts that can be replicated in other communities. This research looks at the U.S.'s HAZUS-MH Flood Model and adapts some of its methodologies to Piura, Peru, as an example of many regions around the world with limited technical and capital capacity to estimate inundation risks. Thus, this research proposes a methodology for accessible and achievable flood risk estimation which takes into account limited available data. The proposed methodology will produce maps of potential inundation areas and monetized damage values from flood scenarios. These outputs can further help local authorities design, decide, and prepare their risk mitigation and adaptation plans for the future.

This study aims to understand the dynamics of the Mae Kampong's cultural landscape through two intervening approaches. The study includes the cultural landscape and the community resilience. Both are examined to determine the transformations. An analysis was made of capital sources and management of resources. The methodology includes literary reviews, site observations, and interviews. The findings illustrate three periods; resilience, adaptation, and transformation. In the last phase, the community utilized their opportunities to transform into entrepreneurs. Given that a physical environment is a manifestation of its socio-cultural context, this paper seeks to examine the development of the Hua Takhe settlement, the physical components of the community, the socio-spatial interconnection, and the spatial essences of the waterfront shophouses in relation to the ownership patterns. Based on field surveys, oral histories, and observations, the research employs Hall's theory of space to extricate the anthropological aspects of the case studies.
