Poster Abstract: Field Evaluation Of Body Thermoregulation-Based Dynamic Bedroom Air Temperature Control To Improve Sleep, Wenhao Zhang, Stefano Schiavon, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Sleep is essential for human health and well-being. Previous lab-based studies have shown that dynamically adjusting bedroom temperature according to body thermoregulation can improve sleep quality and thermal satisfaction. However, such strategies have not been tested in real-world settings, and there is a lack of practical solutions developed for residential buildings. In this work, we test a body thermoregulation-based dynamic air conditioning (AC) control strategy designed for typical Singapore homes and evaluated it in a pilot field deployment. The preliminary findings suggest that the proposed strategy can be successfully implemented in real bedroom settings and may improve sleep outcomes.

What Is A Digital Twin Anyway? Deriving The Definition For The Built Environment From Over 15,000 Scientific Publications, Abdelrahman Mahmoud, Edgardo Macatulad, Binyu Lei, Matias Quintana, Clayton Miller, Filip Biljecki

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The concept of Digital Twins (DT) has attracted significant attention across various domains, particularly within the built environment. However, there is a sheer volume of definitions and the terminological consensus remains out of reach. The lack of a universally accepted definition leads to ambiguities in their conceptualization and implementation, and may cause miscommunication for both researchers and practitioners. We employed Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to systematically extract and analyze definitions of DTs from a corpus of more than 15,000 full-text articles spanning diverse disciplines. The study compares these findings with insights from an expert survey that included 52 experts. The …

A Data-Driven Agent-Based Model Of Occupants’ Thermal Comfort Behaviors For The Planning Of District-Scale Flexible Work Arrangements, Martín Mosteiro-Romero, Matias Quintana, Rudi Stouffs, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In a global context of increasing flexibility in the way workplaces and the districts in which they are located are used, there is a need for occupant-driven approaches to plan urban energy systems. Several authors have suggested the use of agent-based models (ABM) of building occupants in urban building energy simulations due to their ability to reproduce emergent behaviors from individual agents’ actions. However, few works in the literature take full advantage of the ABM paradigm, accounting for both occupant presence and energy-relevant behaviors at the district scale. In this work, we propose a methodology to develop a data-driven, agent-based …

Collecting feedback from people in indoor and outdoor environments is traditionally challenging and complex to achieve in a reliable, longitudinal, and non-intrusive way. This paper introduces Cozie Apple, an open-source mobile and smartwatch application for iOS devices. This platform allows people to complete a watch-based micro-survey and provide real-time feedback about environmental conditions via their Apple Watch. It leverages the inbuilt sensors of the smartwatch to collect physiological (e.g., heart rate, activity) and environmental (sound level) data. This paper outlines data collected from 48 research participants who used the platform to report perceptions of urban-scale environmental comfort (noise and thermal) …

Cohort Comfort Models — Using Occupant’S Similarity To Predict Personal Thermal Preference With Less Data, Matias Quintana, Stefano Schiavon, Federico Tartarini, Joyce Kim, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Cohort Comfort Models (CCM) are introduced as a technique for creating a personalized thermal prediction for a new building occupant without the need to collect large amounts of individual comfort-related data. This approach leverages historical data collected from a sample population, who have some underlying preference similarity to the new occupant. The method uses background information such as physical and demographic characteristics and one-time onboarding surveys (satisfaction with life scale, highly sensitive person scale, personality traits) from the new occupant, as well as physiological and environmental sensor measurements paired with a few thermal preference responses. The framework was implemented using …

Designing cities for thermal comfort is an important priority in a warming and urbanizing world. As temperatures in cities continue to break extreme heat records, it is necessary to develop and test new approaches capable of tracking human thermal sensations influenced by microclimate conditions, complex urban geometries, and individual charac-teristics in dynamic settings. Thermal walks are a promising novel research method to address this gap. During a ther-mal walk in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, we examined relationships between the built environment, microclimate, and subjective thermal judgments across a downtown city neighborhood slated for redevelopment. Subjects equipped with GPS devices participated in …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The built environment should be designed and operated to create safe, comfortable, and productive spaces for humans. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to understand human responses to environmental stimuli including, but not limited to, thermal, visual, air, and acoustic quality stimuli. Such an investigation allows researchers to identify threshold values, indexes, and models capturing human responses to environmental stimuli, which in turn can be used to design and control buildings to achieve tailored comfortable, healthy, and productive conditions with a limited energy use. In this context, human-centric approaches are becoming increasingly popular in the scientific community due to …

Uncertainty Matters: Bayesian Probabilistic Forecasting For Residential Smart Meter Prediction, Segmentation, And Behavioral Measurement And Verification, Jonathan Roth, Jayashree Chadalawada, K. Rishee Jain, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

As new grid edge technologies emerge—such as rooftop solar panels, battery storage, and controllable water heaters—quantifying the uncertainties of building load forecasts is becoming more critical. The recent adoption of smart meter infrastructures provided new granular data streams, largely unavailable just ten years ago, that can be utilized to better forecast building-level demand. This paper uses Bayesian Structural Time Series for probabilistic load forecasting at the residential building level to capture uncertainties in forecasting. We use sub-hourly electrical submeter data from 120 residential apartments in Singapore that were part of a behavioral intervention study. The proposed model addresses several fundamental …

This paper discusses the creation of targeting and segmentation information about non-residential buildings that are equipped with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meters, or smart meters. Statistics, model, and pattern-based temporal features are extracted from over 36,000 smart meters. They are then merged with a database of past energy efficiency interventions such as lighting, HVAC, and controls retrof its from 1,600 buildings. The buildings are divided into Good, Average, and Poor performing classes according to consumption from before and after the retrofits. Classification models are developed that improve the ability to predict retrofit success and standard industry class by 18.3% and …

A Workflow For Managing Building Information And Performance Data Using Virtual Reality: An Alternative To Bim For Existing Buildings?, Adam Rysanek, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter Aug 2017

A Workflow For Managing Building Information And Performance Data Using Virtual Reality: An Alternative To Bim For Existing Buildings?, Adam Rysanek, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Building information modelling (BIM) has carved a growing niche in the construction industry for the support of new building projects. The same cannot be said for existing buildings, where the prevalence of uncertain data, and unclear information, has been difficult to reconcile with the unambiguous nature of BIM parameterization. An opportunity to alleviate these challenges may have arrived from the recent boon of virtual reality platforms for navigating physical environments. This paper demonstrates how labeling of equirectangular images with data or text widgets is possible using publicly-available software libraries. A prototype is presented and tested on a building in Singapore.

Long Wave Radiation Exchange For Urban Scale Modelling Within A Co-Simulation Environment, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Jérôme Kämpf, Arno Schlueter Sep 2015

Long Wave Radiation Exchange For Urban Scale Modelling Within A Co-Simulation Environment, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Jérôme Kämpf, Arno Schlueter

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper describes the implementation of long wave radiation (LWR) exchange as part of a co-simulation process of an urban scale simulation program, CitySim, and a building scale program, EnergyPlus. This coupling process was achieved through the use of functional mockup units (FMU) to exchange various weather, load, and environmental information between the two simulation engines. LWR is an important factor to exchange between the programs as CitySim has more advanced capabilities for radiation exchange calculations from a set of urban buildings and EnergyPlus has a more advanced building heating and cooling load calculation engine. The LWR exchange between surfaces …

Forensically Discovering Simulation Feedback Knowledge From A Campus Energy Information System, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter Apr 2015

Forensically Discovering Simulation Feedback Knowledge From A Campus Energy Information System, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Simulation model calibration has been long identified as a key means of reconciling the consumption and efficiency characteristics of buildings. A key step in this process is the creation of the actual diversity factor profiles for occupancy and various energy end uses such as lighting, plug-loads, and HVAC. Creation of these model inputs is conventionally a tedious process of site surveys, interviews or temporary sensor installation. Sometimes measured energy data can be used to create these schedules, however there are many challenges, especially when the sensor network available is large or unorganized. This paper describes a process applying a series …

Bim-Extracted Energyplus Model Calibration For Retrofit Analysis Of A Historically Listed Building In Switzerland, Clayton Miller, Daren Thomas, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Christian Hersberger, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Arno Schlueter

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Building retrofit analysis in Switzerland traditionally relies on expert heuristics and best practices. These processes are not often supplemented by data or model-driven techniques that would enhance the accuracy and ability to quantify the impact of innovative technologies. We present a process of calibrated building energy model (BEM) analysis of a case study using a building information model (BIM) and measured data from a custom wireless sensor network. The case study is a mixed-use office and residential historically listed building in Zürich, Switzerland. A BIM model was first developed in Autodesk Revit and then extracted to an EnergyPlus model through …
