Aqueous Supercapacitors With Wide Operative Voltage Window And Long Cycling Life Enabled By Electrolyte Hybridization Effect, Shi-Hua Ma, Qi Yin, Jin-Ping Zhao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing supercapacitors (SCs) with long cycling life and wide operative voltage window is a significant topic in the field of aqueous electrolytes. Although the design of water in salt (WIS) electrolytes has pushed the development of aqueous electrolytes to a new height, the WIS electrolytes with an operative voltage window of up to 2.5 V is still very scarce. Herein, in order to enrich the type of aqueous electrolyte with high operative voltage, tetramethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMAOTf) based WIS electrolyte was used as a model to construct WIS based hybrid electrolyte with acetonitrile (ACN) co-solvent and LiTFSI co-solute. In view of …

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
A crucial part of tissue engineering lies in understanding and characterizing the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of various types of biomaterials. Understanding these properties allows better biomaterials to be produced with characteristics more similar to those of the human body and with better biocompatability. In this study, sodium alginate was chemically crosslinked with calcium chloride and subsequently tested for it's instantaneous Elastic Modulus, instantaneous Shear Modulus, and equivalent viscosity using indentation testing methods consisting of a stress-relaxation test and nonlinear curve-fitting analysis. Two and three millimeter indentation tests were performed using a low-cost and portable device built in-lab that resulted …

The performance of pavement plays a critical role in Maintenance, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (MR&R) for highway agencies. Reliable and accurate estimation of pavement performance can be instrumental in prioritization of the limited resources and funding for highway agencies. The latter requires robust prediction models that can handle large-scale, real-world data and can forecast pavement performance in the long run. Unfortunately, the traditional performance prediction models have raised concerns regarding their efficiency and accuracy. It is because these models were based on a limited number of explanatory variables, were not up-to-date and were designed for forecasting short-term (up to five years) …

Cold mix asphalt (CMA) technologies are being used in the United States and have environmental benefits. However, these technologies are not fully developed. We do not yet know their resilient and dynamic modulus, which are important for designing pavement thickness. They have not being used widely because we do not know also their performance. This study looks at three Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) materials to help fill this gap. We conducted several lab tests, including the Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test (HWTT), Semi-Circular Bending Test (SCB), and Texas Overlay Test (TOT). We also tested the mechanical properties of the CCPR …

Polyproline II (PPII) peptide sequences are recognized as promising biomaterials because of their attractive antifouling properties. However, the mechanisms behind their antifouling behavior have not been fully characterized. In this work we show that PPII peptide coverage, controlled by adsorption time, significantly reduces the fouling of bovine serum albumin (BSA, a model foulant). In addition, guest residues introduced into the PPII sequence are shown to significantly impact BSA adsorption as well as human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) spreading. This research will help guide future PPII peptide designs for incorporation into novel biomaterials.

3d Printed Microfluidic Fabrication Methodology, Characterization, Mechanical Design, And Applications In Electrostatic Artificial Muscles And Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells, Terak B. Hornik
Master's Theses
The fabrication of microfluidic devices often requires specialized methods. The development of these methods requires careful characterization and understanding of the processes involved. Using primarily PolyJet 3D printing technology, microfluidics offers a wide scope of applications such as microfluidic benthic microbial fuel cells (MBMFCs) and electrostatic artificial muscles. MBMFCs benefit from the confinement of the microbes resulting in close proximity between the electrode and the organisms. Using a modular design called the Sponge, assembly and upscaling is possible. Electrostatic artificial muscles benefit from a microfluidic approach due to the non-linearity of electrostatic attraction creating disproportionate benefits when miniaturized. When designed …

In this work, the physical and mechanical properties of a fabricated wood-plastic composite (WPC) in accordance with the internationally recognized standard are investigated. The wood-plastic composite is made from recycled low-density polyethylene and mechanically processed rice straw fibers by using a specially designed extrusion machine. From the physical test, it was found that the newly developed WPC has low water absorption and thickness swelling compared to the standard limits. The mechanical tests revealed an improvement of the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity by the increase of fiber content to 65%. The highest recorded values of the modulus of …
