Yttrium-doped hafnium oxide (YDH) nanocrystalline films were produced by sputter-deposition at various substrate times and temperatures, to produce YDH films in a wide range of thicknesses, dYDH∼25 to 1100 nm. The deposition was made onto optical grade quartz and sapphire substrates. Samples deposited on sapphire were subject to post-deposition annealing (PDA) at various times (3-24 hr) and temperatures (1100 - 1500 °C). The effect of d[special characters omitted]YDH on the crystal structure, surface/interface morphology and optical properties of YDH films was investigated. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the formation of monoclinic phase for relatively thin films (<150nm). The evolution towards stabilized cubic phase with increasing dYDH [special characters omitted]is observed. The scanning electron microscopy results indicate the dense, columnar structure of YDH films as a function of dYDH. Spectrophotometry analyses indicate that the grown YDH films are transparent and exhibit interference fringes. The band gap was found to be ∼ 5.60 eV for monoclinic YDH films while distinct separation and an increase in band gap to 6.03 eV is evident with increasing dYDH and formation cubic YDH films. The PDA films band gaps were found to be between 5.31 and 5.72 eV, all of which exhibit secondary gaps. A correlation between growth conditions, annealing, phase evolution, and optical properties of the YDH nanocrystalline thin films is established.

One drawback of cast alloys is that upon solidification, there is minimal microstructural control. Nanocomposite coatings were synthesized, and subsequently annealed, in an attempt to understand the influence of residual stress upon their resistance to corrosion under acidic attack. Pitting corrosion, originating from microscopic coating defects, was commonly identified in the coatings subject to annealing. Finite element analysis was used to map the residual stress distribution adjacent to these defects and quantify resulting geometrical changes. The results show that with the presence of compressive residual stress in the coatings, corrosion-initiated cracking along weak interfaces was suppressed, and structural integrity maintained. This research consists of two projects concerned with handwheel-valve operations. The objectives of poject-1 were to: (1) introduce an ergonomically-modified valve-wrench and compare it to conventional valve-opening methods, in terms of efficiency (time to open valve), perceived physical exertion (Borg-scale), and muscle loading of shoulder and trunk muscles; and (2) determine whether the torque setting (15 Nm and 30 Nm) of the valve affects the preferred valve-opening method. An IR camera was installed in an Arcam A2 system (Arcam AB, Mölndal, Sweeden) and layer-by-layer image acquisition was achieved. The camera's capability to detect manufacturing defects was evaluated by implementing computer vision techniques using LabVIEW measurement and programming software (National Instruments, Austin, TX). The effect of hafnium ion (Hf4+) incorporation in cobalt ferrite (CFO) was studied. Samples of Hf substituted CFO ceramic (CoFe2-xHfxO4), were synthesized in the laboratory with hafnium concentrations ranging from x=0.000 to x=0.200. X-ray diffraction scans show that the Hafnium CFO crystalizes in the inverse spinel phase. Inclusion of hafnium causes lattice expansion, increasing the lattice parameter from 8.374 í? for pure CoFe2O4 to 8.391 í? for the highest concentration of hafnium tested (x=0.020). The dielectric properties of CFO are greatly enhanced by inclusion of hafnium. The enhancement is due to the …

Gamma TiAl has been considered to be an ideal replacement for Ni-base superalloy aerospace applications, particularly in weight-critical applications. While bulk, fully dense gamma-TiAl is 50% less dense than Ni-base superalloys, it also has excellent mechanical properties at high temperature (up to ~800°C). Pre alloyed (Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb) powder was used to fabricate solid, fully dense (3.85 g/cm3) components and foam components with densities ranging from 0.33 g/cm3 to 0.46 g/cm3 by electron beam melting (EBM). In this study, nanoindentation was used to determine Young's modulus of homogeneous plastic materials as well as inhomogeneous epoxy woven fabric composites using various indenters. In the first part, homogeneous PMMA and polycarbonate were characterized using conical and spherical indenters. The conventional approach of the inverse analysis was modified in order to account for effects obtained during spherical nanoindentation. The experimental results were verified using FEA analysis in ABAQUS. It was found that viscous effects were present in conical nanoindentations which led to an overestimation of contact stiffness. Monoclinic RbD2PO4 polycrystals were synthesized via the room temperature crystallization of RbH2PO4 dissolved in D2O. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) data collected at T=25 ºC indicate that this deuterated compound crystallizes in space group P21/m with unit cell parameters a=7.688í?, b=6.192í?, c=4.781í? and β=109.02°, and is isomorphic with the intermediate-temperature phase of its hydrogenated counterpart rubidium dihydrogen phosphate (RDP). We found no evidence of previously reported [Phase Transitions 80, 17 (2007)] polymorphic phase transition in rubidium dideuterium phosphate (DRDP) upon heating from room temperature to 210 ºC.
