The interest in smart, emerging technologies and offsite construction methods continues to grow. While previous studies investigated different offsite construction aspects, there is still lack of research work that explored the current and future use of smart and emerging technologies, especially those used in offsite construction. This study addresses this knowledge gap through a multi-step research methodology. First, a list of 24 technologies was identified. Second, a survey was distributed to study the current use and the experts' future perceptions of the identified technologies in offsite construction. Third, descriptive statistics and computational clustering analysis were used to quantify and classify …

A Simulation Model For Optimal Bidding Decisions, Rayan H. Assaad, Muaz O. Ahmed, Islam H. El-Adaway, Amr Elsayegh
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The lowest bid approach is the most used technique in the US construction procurement environment since competitive bidding is a legal requirement in the public sector. Despite that many research studies were directed to help contractors in taking different bidding decisions, there is still insufficient research efforts that equipped contractors with decision-support tools to decide on optimal bid values. Hence, this paper takes previous research works a step further by developing a simulation model that can be adopted to determine the bid decision that would result in winning more projects. To this end, a methodology composed of multiple steps was …

New Longitudinal Error Balancing Approaches For Closed Traverses, Jose L. Manzano
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study presents two novel approaches to balance the horizontal longitudinal error of closure, EC, in closed polygonal traverses. The standard procedure to balance EC is the Compass Rule. This technique reduces EC to zero by applying corrections in the lengths of all traverse sides. Those corrections are proportional to the corresponding side lengths. That is, this approach is not an error-correcting approach, but an error-balancing procedure.
The proposed new techniques are based on sensitivity analysis of EC with respect to small variations, Δi, in the lengths of all sides i = 1, …

Chaos Game Optimization Method For Weight Minimization Of Steel Truss Structure, Eain Kyi Thar
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The research proposes the so-called chaos game optimization (CGO) method to perform the optimal sizing design of steel truss structures under applied loading regimes. The optimization problem aims at the minimization of the total weight (directly related to the cost function) of the designed structure subjected to the constraints describing the intrinsic structural responses complying with limit-state specifications. The CGO approach is based on the underlying chaos theory that establishes the primary patterns as fractals in responses to the systems representing them as self-organized dynamical systems. The fractal is generated as an initial Sierpinski triangle (i.e., search space of solution …

Dynamic Pricing In Electric Power Markets Affected By Distributed Energy Generation Using Agent-Based Modeling, Gasser G. Ali, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The power infrastructure in the US is facing many challenges concerning capacity, reliability, and sustainability. Some of those challenges are associated with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the conventional grid system. DER may offer reliable and cost-effective distributed small-scale generation near or at end-consumers. However, it also creates new challenges for utilities and generating companies due to the uncertainties in estimating demands. Accordingly, the goal of this research is to investigate dynamic pricing in electric power markets considering the effect of the increasing penetration of DER. To achieve that goal, a complex system-of-systems model that combines agent-based …

Recently, the integration of building information modeling (BIM) with augmented reality (AR) has been introduced to support decision-making on change orders in construction sites. However, traditional BIM-AR-based systems have some limitations on the interaction with the changes of construction work and cost information. Therefore, this research aims to develop a BIM-AR-based system to support the decision-making process of change orders during the construction phase. It includes four main functions: (1) visualization of change models and interaction with them in real-world environments, (2) cost assessment for calculating the direct cost of changes automatically and showing the information of cost comparison, (3) …

The budget for the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) in FY21 is $3.35 billion. AIP's contractual guidelines and policies are outlined in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 5100.38D. Substantial contractual changes within AIP projects are likely to create risks that can greatly impact cost, time, and quality. To implement improved change management, identification and evaluation of contractual change are essential. Thus, there is a need to create an automated model to identify and evaluate contractual changes in AIP projects. This paper fills this knowledge gap. Using 876 contractual changes made to FAA 5100.38D, the authors utilized an interrelated multi-step methodology. Firstly, the …

Uniclass 2015 data generally seems to be overlooked in favour of the more valuable COBie data when discussion begins about BIM model metadata and, at present, few studies are devoted to it and its delivery through automated methodologies. Classification is a key part of the BIM process – without the ability to distinguish one object from another a BIM model lacks the definition required for implementing downstream applications such as functional simulations, compliance checking and other automated technologies. The use of classification data is, of course, not the only way of identifying objects but it is currently the only standardised …

State Transportation Agencies have been experiencing staffing difficulties in the last couple of decades due to the deterioration of infrastructure and a large number of employees retiring or transitioning to the private sector. Therefore, the STA demographic has become much younger and a loss of critical knowledge has resulted from this changeover. Construction Inspection in particular has been severely impacted. Inspired by the NCHRP Synthesis 450, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has initiated the Risk-Based Construction Inspection project which focuses on prioritizing construction activities based on the risk associated with failure of that work item. The purpose of which is to …

A numerical model is extended to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of surface wave propagation over mud in the presence of currents. A phase-resolving frequency-domain model for wave-current interaction is improved to account for wave modulations due to viscoelastic mud of arbitrary thickness. The model compares well with published laboratory data and performs slightly better than the model with viscous mud-induced wave damping mechanism. Monochromatic and random wave simulations are conducted to examine the combined effect of currents, mud-induced wave dissipation and modulation, and nonlinear wave-wave interactions on surface wave spectra. Results indicate that current effects on wave damping over viscoelastic …
