Examining The Preparedness Of Educational Diagnosticians In Texas, Mertie Gomez, William H. Blackwell, Corinna Villar Cole, Chase Young
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
This study examined the extent to which educational diagnosticians in Texas perceived their certification program prepared them with the professional knowledge recommended by the Council for Exceptional Children’s Advanced Preparation Standards Specialty Set: Special Education Diagnostician Specialist (CEC, 2015). A total of 113 currently practicing educational diagnosticians in Texas responded to a 28-item survey based on the CEC standards for educational diagnosticians. Participants reported being less prepared to meet standards related to collaboration, vocational and assessment measures, behavior assessment measures, and language assessment measures. Diagnosticians working in urban school districts reported lower levels of preparation as compared to those working …

Principal Evaluation In The United States: A National Review Of State Statutes And Regulations, Sarah R. Nielsen, Alyson L. Lavigne
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The growing recognition of how much principals matter for student learning and how they make a difference has fueled the need to ensure that effective principals are leading every school. One way to achieve this is through principal evaluation, which has experienced significant changes in the last decade. We conducted a national exploratory study (50 states) to document the trends in and provide an illustration of the current situation of states’ principal evaluation policies and practices. Using literature-based themes, our analysis of state statutes and regulations revealed that a majority of states have policies requiring at least one literature-based element. …

Training And Development Of Instructor-Leadership: An Instructional Systems Design Approach, Paul T. Balwant
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
A body of research on instructors’ use of leadership behaviors in higher education teaching, often called instructor-leadership, is gaining momentum. Despite the field’s growth, the practical recommendations emerging from empirical investigations of instructor-leadership remain largely underdeveloped. In particular, the most popular practical implication – training and development of instructor-leadership – is given fleeting attention. In light of this, the present paper aims to provide detailed guidelines on the training and development of instructor-leadership by drawing from both the instructor-leadership and training and development bodies of literature. In so doing, this paper utilizes the instructional systems design approach to provide guidelines …

The Influence Of A Science Methods Course On Prospective Elementary Teachers’ Visions Of Science Teaching, Martha M. Canipe, Jessica Y. Coronado Verdugo
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Prospective elementary teachers may enter their teacher education program having experienced science more as a collection of definitions and facts than in ways that support rich engagement with scientific phenomena. As a result, their visions of themselves as science teachers may not align with the most recent understandings about how to teach science to support student learning. Science methods courses are settings that have the potential to shift prospective teachers’ visions of science teaching. We used an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach with collection of survey data followed by interviews with selected participants. We analyzed how prospective elementary teachers’ visions …

Initial Teacher education
This final report provides background to the four domains of the Myanmar Teacher Competency Standards Framework (TCSF), and the validation study design, stages and methods which sought to answer the focus question: Does the TCSF describe effective teaching in Myanmar? The study included expert review, a teacher survey and case studies of teaching practice in a sample of effective teachers. The report presents key findings and next steps from validation of the TCSF to implementation.

Discipline-Oriented Citizenship, Alexander Pope Iv, Sarah Surak
eJournal of Public Affairs
We introduce a framework for considering the particularities of civic engagement in higher education. Colleges and universities make increasing references to civic engagement in mission statements and other guiding documents. The nature of these documents does not allow for distinctions between types of civic engagement activities that might occur in specific academic disciplines. This may suggest a singular approach to civic engagement. We argue that actual pedagogies demonstrate variance and nuance in purposes of and approaches to civic engagement. Supporting faculty considerations of what content and skills are necessary for civic engagement in a particular academic discipline, we adapt and …

Music As A Management Tool In Elementary Physical Education: A Qualitative Investigation, David C. Barney, Keven A. Prusak
Faculty Publications
Classroom management is an important aspect for a K-12 teacher in any content area. The same applies in physical education (PE). In PE there are large spaces, students are moving, and in many cases, equipment (basketballs, rackets, hula hoops, etc.) is involved. Thus, making PE a unique challenge in regard to classroom management for PE teachers. One tool an elementary PE teacher can use for classroom management is music. For this study, one school administrator, 19 elementary-aged students and one PE teacher were interviewed to better understand their perspectives of music as a management tool in elementary PE. Findings indicate …

Feasibility Of Modifying Existing Chemistry Demonstrations By Using Substitute Materials, Dane Mykel M. Quiambao, Armando M. Guidote Jr, Rhodora F. Nicdao
Chemistry Faculty Publications
This study aimed to reiterate the use of Chemistry demonstrations as effective teaching tools to students while addressing some of its drawbacks, which discourages teachers from doing them such as cost and safety. Four chosen existing Chemistry demonstrations (Blue Bottle Experiment, Copper Sulfate Experiment, Blown Away, Dancing Flames) were modified by using substitute reagents, which are more accessible, relatively safer, and at lower cost. These demonstrations were chosen based on how easily the substitute reagents will be obtained. Afterwards, with the permission of a private junior high school, they were presented to a group of Grade 9 students of their …

Effects Of Google Sites On Science Achievement And Creativity Belief Among Year Five Pupils, Saraswathy Ramasundrum
Student Works (2020-2029)
In recent years, research has shown that there is a decline in pupils’ science achievement and creativity belief because of out-dated pedagogy and lack of innovation in learning. These deficits led to pupils being passive, and shortcomings in their creativity. Hence, Google Sites has a social media application has increasingly been viewed as a tool to enhance learning. The aim of this study is to see the effect of Google Sites on science achievement and creativity belief among Year Five pupils. A quasi-experimental design was employed. Two intact classrooms were chosen randomly from an urban public primary school in Selangor. …

Student Works (2020-2029)
Manipulative skills are psychomotor skills that enable students to use and handle science apparatus and substances correctly, handle specimens correctly and carefully, and sketch specimens accurately during scientific investigation. The inability of students to acquire science manipulative skills can affect the acquisition of other skills and scientific knowledge. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the mastery of science manipulative skills of lower secondary students. This is a qualitative study that was conducted over 7 weeks. Participants in this study were selected through purposive sampling technique that involved 10 Form 2 students and two science teachers. The researcher used experimental tasks …

Solving Concurrent And Nonconcurrent Coplanar Force Systems: Balancing Theory And Practice In The Technology And Engineering Education Classroom, Andrew J. Hughes, Chris Merrill

The basic concepts inherent to statics, including unbalanced and balanced forces and instability and stability of physical systems, have traditionally been covered in middle and high school physical science courses (Physical Science as indicated in Next Generation Science Standards). Yet, these concepts are covered using a physical science approach that has minor but significant differences in terminology, structure, and focus when compared with an engineering approach. Since a robust understanding of statics is considered an essential component for most engineering disciplines, Technology and Engineering Education’s (T&EE) implementation of statics with an engineering approach could promote students’ ability to transfer learning …
