That racially motivated conflicts occur in schools is an indisputable fact that becomes evident upon review of both academic literature and popular media. Events such as the Jena 6 incident (Maxwell & Zehr, 2007), school wide racially motivated riots (latimes.com), and court rulings (theithican.org) are distressing examples that racial barriers are real and potentially dangerous for many students in this country. The purpose of this study was to propose why it makes sense to practice child welfare social work in the public school system (kindergarten through 12th grade), and to evaluate why there is a need for child protective services (CPS) child welfare social workers to be active and out-stationed in the public school setting. A questionaire was developed to interview and obtain responses from nine experienced retired and prior social workers.

Test Anxiety And Relaxation Training In Third-Grade Students, Heidi Larson, Angela Yoder, Colleen Johnson, Mera El Rahami, Jiwon Sung, Fred Washburn

As testing becomes an achievement marker for elementary school children, test anxiety would naturally follow for these children. This study looks at test anxiety in third grade students, as well as relaxation training as a treatment modality to deal with that anxiety. One hundred and four third grade students participated in this study. Those students that received relaxation training experienced less test anxiety after the treatment. Students in the control group showed no changes in test anxiety. The use of relaxation training among third grade students may be a beneficial method for teachers to reduce anxiety in their students.

This capsule on the International History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited (with a few exceptions) to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, presents aspect of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts prior to the time in which they appeared in published form. The authors present a study that used a conceptual framework of adult learning and differentiated learning styles with graduate students in a counselor education classroom. Students in a hybrid course had higher midterm, group proposal, and posttest scores than did students in a face-to-face course taught by the same professor.

In this article, the author explores the nature of leadership from a gendered perspective, specifically addressing leadership challenges for women. Leadership challenges, gender stereotypes, and definitions of leadership are discussed. Recommendations for professional redefinition of leadership within the counseling profession and strategies for successful negotiation of leadership roles are provided.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the connection between parent involvement and autonomy support, as well as the combined construct of autonomy supportive parent involvement, with internalized mental health symptoms. A secondary purpose of this study is to determine how certain parent demographics relate to attitudes and behaviors towards both parent involvement and autonomy support. Because of this, the purpose of the study was to examine the experiences of African American, female, graduate students in a College Student Affairs program. Institutions of higher education in the United States are experiencing the unique challenge of supporting their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender/transsexual (LGBT) students at a time when their identity development has been well researched. Researchers have shown that the suicide rates among LGBT individuals are comparatively higher than those of their heterosexual counterparts. Many colleges and universities support their LGBT students via a network of other community members through LGBT student organizations on campus.
