The authors investigated ways in which selected 2001 standards of the Councii for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, namely, retention and evaluation criteria relative to nonacademic characteristics, are addressed within Community Counseling master's-degree programs. Results from this survey research study illustrated various retention criteria that are used to evaluate students in various community counseling programs across the country.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, in no small part due to all the life transitions occurring at one time. While many services are in place both on and off of most college campuses to prevent suicide and facilitate students seeking help, there is still a stigma attached to being suicidal and admitting that you need help. Creating awareness about suicide, the reasons people choose it, and the effects it has on others could work to help to remove that stigma and encourage those who are suicidal to take healthy steps.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, so it is important to be aware of the warning signs. While physical abuse may be the most common and obvious danger, emotional and psychological damage is severe and can cause devastating effects on the individual. There is a paucity of research on the topic of professional school counselors and their perceptions of families. The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative study was to examine how urban professional school counselors perceive low-income families in their schools. To accomplish this investigation, ten school counselors in two urban school districts were interviewed twice and were then sent an email with follow-up questions. The data was analyzed for themes and patterns, which were subjected to verification procedures. School counselors need multicultural competence to implement comprehensive school counseling programs that promote the academic achievement of all students. Prior research demonstrates that school counselors have reported high levels of multicultural competence. However, there is no evidence that this self-perceived competence translates into practice. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of how practicing professional school counselors conceptualize multicultural competence and how they implement it into their work. The purpose of this study was to propose why it makes sense to practice child welfare social work in the public school system (kindergarten through 12th grade), and to evaluate why there is a need for child protective services (CPS) child welfare social workers to be active and out-stationed in the public school setting. A questionaire was developed to interview and obtain responses from nine experienced retired and prior social workers.
