Antifungal resistance, like antibiotic resistance, is a growing health concern. With the increase of immunocompromised patients, as well as advances made in hospital methodologies, antifungal resistance is becoming an increasingly greater threat. Experimental evolution in the laboratory coupled with genome sequencing can identify rare, spontaneous mutations caused by selective pressure that allow for fungi to survive and reproduce in antifungal environments.

The Postclassic city of Mayapan was the multiethnic capital of the League of Mayapan which controlled much of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately A.D. 1150 to 1450. The Carnegie Institution of Washington began excavations in the region in 1942 and continued through the 1960s. Their excavations were limited to within the walls of the city, but are the most extensive body of excavations conducted in the region. Much of the data are included in a series of Carnegie reports (1948—1952) and includes over 350,000 artifacts reflecting public, domestic, and religious life across the city.

The use of “sedation vacations” or spontaneous awake has been a long-debated topic within the realm of intensive care units. What these essentially are is a short, daily break from sedative drugs used to maintain a decreased level of consciousness and for their analgesic/ anxiolytic on sedated patients. These trials have been implemented as early research showed promise in reducing the length of time patients required intubation and reducing the total length of ICU stays. This post-stroke telehealth capstone project intends to discover and implement a telehealth program designed to enhance the care and outcomes of post-stroke patients being treated at Hospital A. After a stroke, patients often face challenges in recovery. Care providers are often stretched thin and have difficulty completing post-stroke monitoring requirements such as National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Level of Consciousness (LOC), Glascow Coma Scale (GCS), and other assessments needed by these acutely ill patients at specific intervals. Advanced airway management is a crucial aspect of caring for critically ill patients. Advanced airways refer to techniques used to maintain an open airway. Examples include endotracheal intubation and nasotracheal intubation. Often, during intubation, you find yourself in an emergency situation and have medications that the doctor or advanced practitioner instructs you to retrieve from the Pyxis (automated medication dispensing station). These medications, such as atropine, lidocaine, and fentanyl, are commonly used to premedicate your patient. Rushing to the Pyxis to obtain these medications consumes valuable time. Each minute of hypoxia results in your brain losing essential oxygen.

Hospitals must act now by implementing better advocacy and staff training. QSEN principals are the foundation to quality improvement research and implementation with the hospital. Base isolation is the current gold standard in protecting buildings from earthquake damage by using isolators to separate a building from its foundation; however, it is not always effective in preventing non-structural damage to buildings. This is especially important in the case of hospitals, where patients are at risk of injury or death in the face of earthquakes. A new method known as floor isolation is proposed to combat this problem; it features isolators between each individual floor of the building. Lichens are a symbiotic organism consisting of two components: a mycobiont (fungus) and a photobiont (algae and/or cyanobacteria). These organisms play a significant role within the environment such as food resources, in practical uses such as dyes or medicine, and as environmental indicators. Current understandings of the lichens in Kentucky remain broad and incomplete. The purpose of this study is to catalog the diversity of the lichen genus Cladonia within Carter Caves State Resort Park (CCSRP), a park known for its high biological diversity. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols are interventions implemented during the surgical process that work to improve patient outcomes and reduce postoperative complications. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how ERAS can be implemented in hospital A to improve patient outcomes. ERAS is significant for implementation in hospital A due to the large number of gastrointestinal procedures performed in the facility. Implementing these protocols will work to improve the patient’s outcomes and reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) principles can easily be used to implement ERAS protocols.
