Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite remarkable economic development in South Korea (Korea), there are only a few women leaders, and they face challenges in the gendered workplace where organizational constraints and traditional values coexist. In a reanalysis of narratives of Korean women leaders (KWLs), using an ideal-type analysis as a novel qualitative research method, we identified five types of KWLs' resistance to their token status in the workplace: (1) Opportunity-Driven, (2) Pathfinding, (3) Self-Reflective, (4) Persevering, and (5) Changing the Way to Resist. The five types broaden the meaning of KWLs' resistance and highlight different ways they resist their token status in the workplace. …

Moving Drives You Crazy, Michelle C. Dziurgot 2025 American Dental Association

Moving Drives You Crazy, Michelle C. Dziurgot

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Editor-in-Chief shares her frustrating experience moving a dental office. Key challenges included dental insurances dropping the practice from networks during recredentialing, causing denied claims for 30-60 days despite no changes to tax ID or NPI. State regulations also required new payments for radiation tubes, rather than crediting previous payments, despite a reduction in equipment. Furthermore, dental supply companies and movers did not take responsibility for broken equipment during the move. Despite these "insane and archaic" hurdles, most patients transitioned, and the article concludes with a comprehensive resource list for practice address changes

Terminating an employee is a challenging and risky decision for "at will" employers in Michigan. This article provides best practices, starting with assessing legal risks like discrimination claims. It emphasizes the importance of documenting performance issues, feedback, and training provided, as well as adhering to employee handbook policies. Consideration should be given to offering severance packages, which may include pay in lieu of notice or a larger sum with a legal separation agreement. For the termination meeting, plan brief talking points, have a second person present, choose a quiet time, and ensure retrieval of practice property and removal of system …

Dentistry And The Law: What Ever Happened To The Ban On Covenants Not To Compete?, Daniel Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) rule banning most employee non-competition agreements remains held up, despite a scheduled September 2024 effective date, due to ongoing court challenges with conflicting decisions. Recent changes at the FTC, including the appointment of a new chair (Andrew Ferguson) who previously opposed the ban, suggest a potential reversal or non-enforcement by the current Trump administration. While motions have been filed to hold appeals in abeyance, the FTC's formation of a new Joint Labor Task Force complicates the outlook, indicating continued focus on antitrust issues in the labor market. A clear outcome or timeline for the ban …

Capability Building And Quality Management In Higher Education: An Empirical Investigation, Kanwal Nasim, Xiaowen Tian

Journal of Global Education and Research

This paper proposes a resource-capability-based framework of quality management in Higher Education (HE) and empirically tests it against the experience of HE institutes in Pakistan. The paper posits that HE institutions face intensifying global education competition in a world of accelerated globalization, fast pace of technology development, and rapidly growing knowledge. To enhance quality and performance, they need to build higher-order dynamic capabilities of knowledge creation and transfer (KCT) undergirded by orchestrating three sets of resources they own or control: Staff, students, and facilities. The paper hypothesizes how HE institutions can orchestrate the resources to build up dynamic KCT capabilities …

Based on an analysis of 15 national news articles (January–May 2025), the findings reveal that narratives such as “lazy,” “spoiled,” and “quick to resign” are consistently reproduced through word choice, institutional quotes, and framing aligned with traditional work values. These representations are not mere reflections of reality but symbolic practices that reinforce dominant work structures. A critical reading …

Findings identify three interrelated communication-related factors: mission-driven overwork, gaslighting, and value incongruence. Rather than prescribing solutions, the study centers on women’s lived experiences to highlight the communication patterns they perceive as harmful. …

A comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of the belonging construct revealed five key components of a sense of belonging in the workplace: (1) accepted/liked, (2) known/understood, (3) purpose/status, (4) respected/voice, and (5) safety/trust. Scale validation began with a review of 40 initial items by a panel of 12 subject matter experts (SMEs). The items were then revised, and a pilot study involving 67 participants was conducted to test these 40 items through exploratory factor analysis and construct validation. The top-performing 25 items were …
