An Empirical Study Of The Impact Of Ceo Characteristics On New Firms' Time To Ipo, Qin Yang, Monica Zimmerman, Crystal X. Jiang

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

An initial public offering (IPO) is one of the most critical events in the life of a firm. As the IPO market continues to attract attention from both entrepreneurs and investors, research examining the relationship between the firm's characteristics and its IPO performance is growing. In this paper, we use the upper echelon perspective to empirically examine the relationship between the firm's chief executive officer (CEO) and the firm's time to IPO, a relationship that has so far received little attention. Using data obtained from 237 IPOs in the U.S. software industry, we found that the CEO's prior executive experience, …

Predicting Consumers’ Ethical Behaviors Through Attitudes Toward Behavior And Prior Behavior, Rajendar K. Garg, Uday S. Tate, Suneel K. Maheshwari

Management Faculty Research

While the concerns for ethical issues relating to consumers have dramatically increased over the last decade, research investigating predictors of these behaviors has been sparse. This paper addresses the attitudinal, personal and cultural factors that predict a large majority of unethical behavioral practices of consumers. An empirical survey was conducted of consumers. The results show that consumer beliefs/values concerning the specific behaviors and their own past behaviors large predict the future behaviors. Consumers' personal factors such as age, sex, nationality, individualism, etc. did not influence their ethical judgments and behaviors at all in this study of working adults.

Building on previous qualitative research, we argue that knowledge absorption and spillovers comprise a critical factor in the evolution of specialized knowledge in regional industrial clusters in biotech industries. Although bioscience industrial clusters have been widely researched in the last decade, the nature of knowledge creation …

Who Calls The Shots In Dining Customer Service, Kendi Root

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction:

Americans have become impatient with poor dining service standards. Some believe a depressed economy, lack of skilled labor, and even bad customers have contributed to a new epidemic (Kim & Chen, 2010). Bottom line, most paying customers probably prefer a pleasant service staff to an unpleasant one. Service staff with pleasant personalities and positive attitudes impact the customer experience and overall satisfaction (Ryan & Ployhart, 2003; Barrash, & Costen, 2008). Grandey in 2003 coined this “QSD” or quality service delivery.

The Record Industry In Transition, Monica Caro 2011 Whittier College

The Record Industry In Transition, Monica Caro

Whittier Scholars Program

The objective of this paper is to examine how technology and the internet has shaped the business model of the record industry. For decades the record industry operated under a service-type model before eventually transitioning into an industry of physical products. The industry's transition began with the consolidation of major record companies by media conglomerates. Driven by their venture for profit, major record companies only capitalized on artists with the greatest potential of generating revenue. Consequently, this compromised artistic creativity and ultimately encouraged by the development of an increasingly homogenized music market. Furthermore, this paper analyzes how major record companies …

At The Intersection Of Corporate Governance And Environmental Sustainability, Jayne W. Barnard 2011 William & Mary Law School

At The Intersection Of Corporate Governance And Environmental Sustainability, Jayne W. Barnard

William & Mary Business Law Review

Most boards of public companies have learned to live comfortably with audit committees, nominating committees, and compensation committees. An increasing number of companies are now also creating risk-management committees. This Essay explores the early stages of development of yet another board-level committee: the sustainability committee. The Essay posits several advantages to having a board-level sustainability committee and identifies possible sources of pressure for the creation of more such committees. It also suggests some of the disadvantages of sustainability committees and cautions against cosmetic governance reform. By examining what we know today (and can imagine tomorrow) about sustainability committees, this Essay …
