Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti 2011 Whittier College

Conditioning The Capital Asset Pricing Model To Incorporate Macro-Economic Based Variables, Maria Casandra Rusti

Whittier Scholars Program

Time variations in expected returns are related to the business cycle. Evidence shows that expected returns are higher in economic recessions, since investors are less willing to hold risky assets, and lower in economic booms. This suggests that time variations in equity premiums should be accounted for by variables related to the business cycle. Being able to model equity premiums helps investors optimize their portfolios. Therefore, we develop a conditioning macroeconomic variable that captures time variation in risk premium across business cycles and we test its predictive power for future market returns. More specifically we look at the following macro-economic …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Technology And Lean Manufacturing, Abubaker Haddud 2011 Eastern Michigan University

A Study Of The Relationship Between Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Technology And Lean Manufacturing, Abubaker Haddud

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this research effort is to investigate the relationship between Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and reducing waste in a manufacturing setting where a lean manufacturing system has been implemented. This research identifies implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact on work-in-progress management, inventory management, manufacturing assets tracking and maintenance, and manufacturing control in lean manufacturing environments. The study specifically focuses on how RFID can help identify, reduce, and eliminate the seven common types of waste identified by Taiichi Ohno in the Toyota Production System. These seven include overproduction, waiting time, inefficient transportation, inappropriate processing, …

Unleashing Innovation In Public Agencies, Christine G. Springer 2011 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Unleashing Innovation In Public Agencies, Christine G. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Nurturing continuous innovation and renewal in public agencies is not only important but critical to successful public management in an environment of change. Innovation is a tool for transforming the entire culture of organizations and there is a growing recognition that fostering a culture of innovation is critical to success. It is even as important as mapping out competitive strategies, maintaining good profit margins in revenue areas or meeting statutory requirements. There are fifteen types of teams and individuals that fuel innovation inside organizations: five outsiders and ten insiders. By developing and supporting some of these innovation personalities that often …

Globalization: History Repeats (Chapter 1 From Distributed Team Collaboration In Organizations: Emerging Tools And Practices), Tim Rahschulte, Russ Martinelli, Russ Waddell

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The strategy to improve business results through globalization has become increasingly common. Success in reaping the business value intended from a globalization strategy is, unfortunately, not as common. As national boundaries blur and everyone grows more connected through global collaboration, the dynamics of organizational life grow more complex. These complexities offer challenge, confusion, and frustration – but also great opportunity! The key to achieving improved business results does not hinge on strategies alone, but also on our ability to effectively lead global product and service development teams to successfully execute the strategies. Those struggling the most are the practitioners who …

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li 2011 Rochester Institute of Technology

The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Under a uncertain environment (i.e., growing global competition, changing customer demand, shorter product life cycles, and increasing market diversity), two manufacturing strategies often emerge: manufacturing technology automation and manufacturing system integration. Existing case studies indicate that firms should adapt manufacturing integration first and then automate the manufacturing system to improve manufacturing performance. Using 288 responses from manufacturing managers, the findings of this study empirically supports this proposition. Analytical results also show that the combination strategies of manufacturing system integration followed by manufacturing technology automation have more than twice the effect on manufacturing performance than using manufacturing automation strategy alone.

Making A Science Of Service Systems Practical: Seeking Usefulness And Understandability While Avoiding Unnecessary Assumptions And Restrictions, Steven Alter 2011 University of San Francisco

Making A Science Of Service Systems Practical: Seeking Usefulness And Understandability While Avoiding Unnecessary Assumptions And Restrictions, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This book’s theme is “The Science of Service Systems,” yet there is substantial question about whether the definition and nature of service systems have been articulated adequately. This paper examines definitions of service and service system that could frame or otherwise influence future developments in service science and could have implications for what should and should not be included within service science. It argues that the initial development of service science should use straightforward definitions that are understandable, useful, broadly applicable, and teachable. It proposes a definition of service system that is different from the definition proposed in this book’s …

Extending A Systems Analysis Method For Business Professionals, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Despite having been explored, described, theorized, and measured in hundreds of IS research articles, frequent difficulties related to user participation and business/IT communication persist in relation to project management, specification of requirements, implementation in organizations, business/IT alignment, and IS failures. We report on an extension of a long term design sci-ence research project that previously demonstrated a possible path toward ad-dressing these longstanding problems by empowering business professionals to analyze systems in business terms rather than in formalisms for IT specialists. Previous research demonstrated that most of 75 working business professionals with extensive business experience were able to use the …
