The Moderating Effect Of Foreign Direct Investment Intensity On Local Firms' Intangible Resources Investment And Performance Implications, Crystal Jiang, Qin Yang, Sali Li, Yong Wang
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been known to generate positive externalities to increase the productivity and competitiveness of domestic industries through knowledge and technology spillover. This study focuses on the indirect effect of FDI by investigating whether FDI intensity benefits local firms by enhancing the local intellectual property rights (IPR) environment. We argue that due to the inadequate IPR environment in emerging economies, local firms' intangible resources investment can be negatively related to firm performance. Further, we suggest that FDI intensity can improve the local IPR environment, thereby enhancing the appropriability of local firms' intangible resources investment. We find empirical …

With the rapid growth of social media, new challenges are being created for each process of supply chain management (SCM). In order to take advantage of the great potential of social media, managers and designers of SCM systems need to figure out ways to employ social media to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their systems. This study is based on a systematic, multi-judge Q-sort assessment and analysis of a specified universe of reported early-stage cases and examples of social media usage in SCM contexts. The results of the Q-sort analysis help us in developing a conceptual model that depicts …

This is another in a series of articles about some of the most effective models, methods, and processes of organization development (OD), also known as change management, a discipline that offers much to professionals intent on solving real-world problems. Because it is based on a systemic view of organizations, OD includes the whole universe of fuzzy people issues that increasingly determine the success or failure of efforts to implement otherwise flawless technical solutions. This article examines the stages of group development, the role that conflict plays in the process, and the importance of conflict management in group development and team …

It is important that education and training programmes align with the needs of the professions they are designed to support. The culinary arts and hospitality industry is a vocational area that needs to be examined more closely to ensure that the skills and competencies taught are those that will actually be needed when students matriculate from career preparation programmes. This study compared the self-assessed leadership roles and managerial competencies of hospitality students and hospitality management professionals in employment. Using the Competing Values Framework (CVF) as a theoretical framework, eight leadership roles and 24 managerial competencies were examined in an effort …

Managerial Ties, Knowledge Acquisition, Realized Absorptive Capacity And New Product Market Performance Of Emerging Multinational Companies, Masaaki Kotabe, Crystal Jiang, Janet Y. Murray
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Many firms rely on external sources to acquire knowledge that is critical for enhancing new product market performance. Using a sample of 121 emerging multinational corporations (EMNCs) from China, we explore the effects of managerial ties with government officials and foreign MNC partners on knowledge acquisition and investigate how the acquired knowledge affects firms’ new product market performance. Our results indicate that knowledge acquisition could only enhance new product market performance with the presence of realized absorptive capacity. Our study suggests that managers’ decisions on knowledge acquisition from external sources may not increase firms’ new product market performance. Instead, managerial …

When I speak to parents, students, educators and legislators about the concept of “career readiness,” I emphasize that IMSA is preparing learners for careers that do not yet exist. Through learning experiences based on imagination and inquiry, IMSA students, whether enrolled in our residential program or in our statewide enrichment programs, learn to pursue compelling questions of interest, work collaboratively, conduct investigations and communicate findings. In the words of our Standards of Significant Learning, students learn to “think about thinking,” “extend and integrate thought,” and “construct questions which further understanding, forge connections and deepen meaning.” In short, they learn how …
