Interpretation by properly trained employees in a medical setting is an important part of ensuring quality care to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients. This study used surveys to assess the effective use of language resources in medical clinics in the Cache Valley area. The survey measured the number of interpreters and bilingual employees and the training that they have received as well as the perceived efforts of each clinic towards certain language service standards. The survey revealed a significant need for improvement and gave insight as to which activities future training efforts should be directed. Improvement in these areas will …

In this work I discuss the current situation in the Spanish of El Salvador of the voiceless fricative palatal sound. The presence of this sound in Pipil, an orginal language already spoken in El Salvador before the Spaniards arrived, favored its maintenance in Salvadoran Spanish. Since Pipil is a language in extinction, some authors believe that this sound is also disappearing in Salvadoran Spanish. However, Pipil is not the only language with this sound that influences Salvadoran Spanish. University studies in the Spanish language are often times confined to the classroom. However, more and more programs have been implementing civic engagement in the Hispanic community into the curriculum to create a service-learning experience. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of service-learning in enhancing communication techniques. Twenty undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky were surveyed at the onset and the conclusion of one semester while simultaneously serving the Hispanic community. The students, on average, increased the frequency of communication techniques after a semester of service-learning. Students who participate in a service-learning program often times see a result …

This article proposes a reflection on the importance of spelling for the speaker in his own native language and in learning a foreign language by a non-native speaker. First, from a cognitive perspective, the difficulties encountered by a foreign learner in the processing of spelling in both the following ways: phonological and orthographic are examined. Further, it is studied how the literal orthography and the phraseology affect the meaning of the text. Likewise, the relevance that these mistakes bring in the sociocultural field is analyzed. The aim of this paper is to compare the rhetorical functions gathered from the citations of (14) fourteen master´s theses written by seven Spanish and seven Philippine authors. A typology of nine categories was used in order to identify the cultural rhetorical differences that exist in the use of citation from the contrast between contrasting this element in the Philippine and Spanish cultures. The methodology used is textual analysis of the linguistic context of these citations and its subsequent classification within these nine categories. Spanish-English code-switching is a prevalent and significant form of communication in bilingual and bicultural communities. Authors who wish to reflect and validate cultural and linguistic diversity in their written works may incorporate code-switching in their texts. The purpose of this study is to explore the growing trend of the inclusion of the Spanish language in English-based books written for children in the United States. Con este propósito, se analizan los valores semánticos del PP en narrativas de experiencias personales por hablantes de español del pueblo de Jeberos (región Loreto). Este estudio ofrece evidencia del proceso de incursión del PP en contextos del pretérito perfecto simple en narraciones orales. Dentro de este marco, discute la relación del PP con adverbios temporales y con otros tiempos verbales. This dissertation investigates how social networks influence understandings, judgments, and uses of L2 pragmatics. The pragmatic target is the particle hasta ‘until’ as it is used orally and in writing to mark inception with and without negation in Spanish. This study examines how L2 students of Spanish understand, judge, and use hasta when they are members of social networks in university Spanish classes based on (a) pedagogy practice, (b) class level, and (c) mode of expression, and when, outside of university Spanish classes, they are integrated into social networks that involve exposure to different dialectal varieties of Spanish.

Native speech is directed towards native listeners, not designed for comprehension and analysis by language learners. Speed of delivery, or economy of effort, produces a speech signal to which the native listener can assign the correct words. There are no discrete words in the speech signal itself therefore there is often a linguistic barrier in dealing with the local spoken language.

These activities will refresh and improve my Spanish and give me newfound connections with the Spanish speaking world and its cultures, making me a better Spanish teacher.
