Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg 2011 University of Kentucky

Lavapiés, Madrid As Twenty-First Century Urban Spectacle, Matthew Isaiah Feinberg

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Informed by the theories of Henri Lefebvre regarding the production of space and the theories of scale found in current scholarship in Cultural Geography, my methodology analyzes both dramatic texts and theater spaces to investigate how cultural production and capital converge in the “spectacle” of urban space. While employing this term “spectacle” to describe how dramatic texts, theater productions, and modern architecture transform the urban landscape into a metaphoric theater space for the production of local, national, and global identities, this project examines the relationship between theater and urban change in Lavapiés, an iconic, multicultural, and oftenunderserved neighborhood located in …

El Género Detectivesco Y Su Representación En La Novela Mexicana Del Sigloxxi, Maribel Colorado-García 2011 Western Michigan University

El Género Detectivesco Y Su Representación En La Novela Mexicana Del Sigloxxi, Maribel Colorado-García

Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the resurgence of detective fiction in Mexican novéis of the twenty-first century and focuses on the writers' artistic intentions in creating complex texts that contrast the less experimental literature of the Post-Boom. The revival in the popularity of the crime novel in México has emerged, in part, because of the deep societal problems the country faces (such as political corruption, drug cartels, and economic crises), and the sense of powerlessness often experienced by its citizens when confronting such problems. From an aesthetic standpoint, a renewed approach to this genre springs from the novelists' constant quest to represent …

La Mujer Española Escritora De Su Propia Experiencia Carcelaria, Berta Carrasco de Miguel 2011 Western Michigan University

La Mujer Española Escritora De Su Propia Experiencia Carcelaria, Berta Carrasco De Miguel

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role of women prisoners during the Spanish Civil war (1936-1939) and the Francoist regime (1939-1975) as represented in different literary genres such as the testimonio (testimonial narrative), autobiography and the fiction novel. In the first chapter, I analyze the concept of womanhood created by Francisco Franco 's regime through the person of Pilar Primo de Rivera. In the second chapter I study three texts written right after the dictatorship: Desde la noche y la niebla by Juana Doña, Las cárceles de Soledad Real compiled by Consuelo García and En el infierno: ser mujer en las cárceles …

La Búsqueda De Identidad Y Toma De Conciencia De Los Cuatro Personajes Principales En Las Obras Demasiados Héroes Y La Multitud Errante De Laura Restrepo, Mauricio Garcia Vargas 2011 Minnesota State University - Mankato

La Búsqueda De Identidad Y Toma De Conciencia De Los Cuatro Personajes Principales En Las Obras Demasiados Héroes Y La Multitud Errante De Laura Restrepo, Mauricio Garcia Vargas

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In the following thesis I analyze the search for identity and the development of an awareness of self in two novels by Colombian writer Laura Restrepo - La multitud errante (2001) and Demasiados héroes (2009). The four major characters in these two novels suffer "displacement" and have to construct a new sense of self through reflection. Viktor Frankl and others provide the theoretical background for my investigation of how each of these main characters finds a path to self. The importance of the study is that the analysis demonstrates how physical, social, and emotional displacement leads to suffering. As Frankl …

Lo Barroco Lezamesco En Paradiso, Leonardo Venta 2011 University of South Florida

Lo Barroco Lezamesco En Paradiso, Leonardo Venta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I argue that José Lezama Lima's Paradiso is unique among Latin-American novels of the 1960s because it is a hybrid of literary genres - narrative and essay, as well as a "poetic system." Through an open literary framework, the author explores the essence of "cubanía" though language that is both colloquial and elaborate, both devoted to traditions and aiming for transgressions: a novel that reaches for the pinnacle of neobaroque prose. To sustain my argument, I have performed an exhaustive exegesis of my primary text, as well as extensive external research in secondary texts of the highest …

Discovering Cristina: A Study Of Cristina Peri Rossi's Life And Literary Works And Marketing Them To Worldwide Audiences, Dunja Zdero

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

As one of the leading female authors of the Latin American literature, Cristina Peri Rossi has produced a large collection of works including more than 40 published novels, essays, and short story and poetry collections. Her literature is known for addressing various topics such as political and social injustices, love, passion, feminism, sexuality, and gender studies. As an exile in Spain, Peri Rossi also offers an interesting blend of the two Spanish-speaking worlds. Although many other authors speak of the same issues, Peri Rossi provides a very unique insight into both cultures that cannot be seen elsewhere: an insight of …

Self-Discrepancies, Symbolic Self-Completion, And The Role Of Possessions In The Transition From High School To College, Ashlee Lochbaum 2010 Indiana State University

Self-Discrepancies, Symbolic Self-Completion, And The Role Of Possessions In The Transition From High School To College, Ashlee Lochbaum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to explore some of the ways that possessions may be used symbolically to aid adjustment in first-semester freshmen who are transitioning to college. Based on prior literature, the transition to college is often accompanied by self-discrepancies which may be alleviated through symbolic self-completion using possessions. Overall, 219 students participated in this study. Results indicate that first-semester freshmen, as well as upperclassmen students, rely on the symbolic use of possessions in both managing negative affect and symbolizing the ideal college student identity. Furthermore, managing affect through the use of feeling regulators was found to …

La Buscadora: Una Novelita, Brynne Marie Gilbert 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

La Buscadora: Una Novelita, Brynne Marie Gilbert

World Languages and Cultures

This project is a fictional novella which manipulates the boundaries of identity and time in order to explore the ways in which and to what extent one depends upon the other. Because society converts time into a fixed entity of measurement for practicality’s sake, one of the attempts of this novella is to foreground the ambiguity of time so as to illustrate that the confinements that society has placed upon it are not characteristics of time itself. Upon establishing the indefinite nature of time, the text then ponders what becomes of our notion of identity if we are not permitted …

Ecos De Barro De La Memoria A La Imagen De La Imagen Al Poema, Rossy Evelin Lima-Padilla

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The Impossibility Of Freedom In Las Manos De Dios And El Sueño Del Ángel, Matthew John Di Giordano 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

The Impossibility Of Freedom In Las Manos De Dios And El Sueño Del Ángel, Matthew John Di Giordano

Theses and Dissertations

Critics generally read the matter of diagetic subjectivity as existential in Carlos Solórzano's works Las manos de Dios and El sueño del ángel. This study, however, seeks to explore the possibility of non-existential modes of subjectivity in these dramas. It posits an Althusserian mode of subjectivity due to the central conflict of the plays revolving around the oppressive rituals of a controlling church institution. Although the author expresses existential ideals, a reading that takes into account the issue of the church as an ideology producing mechanism, as well as its modes of operation, shows that on the diagetic level …

Female Development Amidst Dictatorship In Julia Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies And Mario Vargas Llosa's La Fiesta Del Chivo, Serena Eileen Call 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

Female Development Amidst Dictatorship In Julia Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies And Mario Vargas Llosa's La Fiesta Del Chivo, Serena Eileen Call

Theses and Dissertations

Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (ruled 1930-1961) developed the reputation as one of the most violent and oppressive leaders of the Western Hemisphere in his thirty-one years of power. Authors Julia Alvarez and Mario Vargas Llosa provide insight into the effects of Trujillo's infamy by sharing the stories of Dominican women. In Alvarez's novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, the Dominican-American author fictionalizes the lives of the Mirabal sisters, historical women who were assassinated in 1961 for their involvement in the anti-Trujillo movement. Likewise, Vargas Llosa centers much of his novel, La fiesta del Chivo, on the life …

A Comparative Analysis Of Parallel Revisionism In The Plays Rabinal Achí And Zoot Suit, Matthew C. Lewis 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

A Comparative Analysis Of Parallel Revisionism In The Plays Rabinal Achí And Zoot Suit, Matthew C. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

This study draws parallels between the dramatic works Rabinal Achí, an anonymous ancient Mayan text, and the Luis Valdez masterpiece Zoot Suit. The parallel that I seek to establish is one of the strong trend of historical revisionism in both works as well as a parallel development of plot and characterization. This work does not claim to be representative of revisionism as a whole, nor does it seek to establish a new official history, but it does to demonstrate how both works, even though they are separated by hundreds of years, share a common bond of subversion and …

A Survey Of Utah Spanish Teachers Regarding The Instruction Of Heritage Language Students Of Spanish, Sara Lynn Wilkinson

Theses and Dissertations

It is imperative that educators understand the current state of heritage language education because many locations have experienced large increases in their heritage language populations in recent years. This study reports on the findings of a statewide survey of secondary Spanish teachers in Utah regarding the instruction of Spanish heritage language students. Their perspectives give insight into Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) education in both traditional Spanish foreign language and heritage language classes. The information gathered describes the availability of specialized courses, the prevalence of SHL students in Spanish classes, and these students' backgrounds. It also describes the characteristics of Spanish …
