Input Vs Corrective Feedback In The Acquisition Of Spanish Negation, Yolanda Pangtay‐Chang
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
Input is important and necessary to acquire a language, nevertheless output will tell us in what degree the language has been acquired.
Since other factors such as motivation affect acquisition, what type of feedback is necessary and in what amount to help L2 students correct their proficiency in the target language?

Ellipsis And Agree: Parallelism Effects In Spanish Noun Drop, Joyce Bruhn De Garavito
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
In Spanish it is possible to drop nouns in order to avoid repetition. Noun drop is very productive (Ticio 2001; 2005).
Given the high level of accuracy in gender concord found in previous studies (Bruhn de Garavito and White 2002; White et al 2004, among others) I predict that adult learners of Spanish have the appropriate representation of number and gender in their L2. They will therefore distinguish between these two features under ellipsis.

The Functions Of Guilt And Shame In Juan José Millás' El Mundo And My Olive-Green Fridge And I: The Posthuman Identity In El Púgil, Constantin Cristian Icleanu
Theses and Dissertations
In his celebrated 2007 novel El mundo, Juan José Millás tells the story of the development of Juanjo, a simulacrum of himself, and describes a series of negative developments that the protagonist faces in his childhood. While much has been written about Millás and the “testimonial realism” of his literary generation, little has been written about the psychological factors that influence his characters. In this paper I analyze Juanjo's development as understood from the gradation of guilt to shame, depression, and later suicidal thoughts. Because Juanjo is not able to find an appropriate mechanism of release for his guilt, …

The Political, Social, Historical, And Literary Significance Of The Writings Of Carolina Maria De Jesus, Kristin Alexis Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The writings of Carolina Maria de Jesus, specifically Quarto de despejo, Casa de alvenaria, Diario de Bitita, and poetry selections from her collection Minha antologia are oft times excluded from "canonical" literature. Many critics both in the press and in academic circles refuse to recognize her writings and story as works of merit, focusing primarily on surface issues without addressing the content of her works. The reason for this is complex, spanning the issues of race, education, socio-economic status, and gender. Contrary to the arguments of many critics over the past sixty years, Carolina's writings are valuable …

Language Outreach and Opportunities for Kids (L.O.O.K) is a Cal Poly student coordinated community service program enhancing the San Luis Obispo community by organizing student led lesson plans at local elementary schools. The program focuses on introducing different cultures and languages through bilingual education. Partnering with L.O.O.K for my senior project will allow me to format unique and interactive lesson plans that focus primarily on the acquisition of a second language through music. The lesson plans will be enhanced by the use of bilingual songs as an integral component of each lesson.
In addition to my direct interaction with the …

La Lucha Por La Libertad Y La Identidad: La Casa De Los Espíritus Como Comentario Sobre La Evolución Del Movimiento Feminista En Chile, Mary Stirchak
World Languages and Cultures
This project will analyze Isabel Allende's novel La casa de los espíritus and provide insight into how the novel functions as a commentary about the feminist movement in Chile during the 20th century. Though La casa de los espíritus is a work of fiction, the project will attempt to draw connections between the experiences of the female characters in the novel and the experiences of women in real life. The actions of each female character represent the struggles of real women as the attempt to subvert the oppression of the patriarchal system. Each woman in the novel attempts to …

Humor In Code-Mixed Airline Advertising, Maria Jose Garcia Vizcaino
Department of Spanish and Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article examines how humor works in the code-mixed advertising campaigns of the Spanish airline company Vueling. Drawing on the fetishism approach to multilingual advertising (Kelly-Holmes, 2005) and the theory of incongruity (Raskin, 1985), this paper explores three main types of humorous deviations in Vueling campaigns: structural, phonetic, and visual. The analysis confirms that humor in Vueling ads is produced by deviations at the formal rather than semantic level of language, specifically through the insertion of foreign languages (mainly English and French) into Spanish colloquial expressions. These foreign elements are partially “domesticated” into local Spanish frames by creative code-mixing mechanisms …
