This dissertation examines how the concepts of biopolitics and postmemory are addressed in the narratives of Chilean author Nona Fernández (1971—) and Dominican author Rita Indiana (1977—) when portraying the dynamics of control and power in the totalitarian regimes of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990) and Joaquín Balaguer Twelve Years (1966-1978). Methodologically, the study explores biopolitics, which regulates the lives and bodies of citizens, and necropolitics, which dictates who can live and who must die, to understand state repression in both narrative contexts. Through the concept of postmemory, the research observes how the trauma of dictatorships is transmitted generationally and manifests …

Patricia Font’s historical drama, El maestro que prometió el mar (2023), focuses on the pedagogy of Antoni Benaiges (1903–1936), a Republican educator who served for two years at a school in rural Burgos prior to being assassinated just days after the Nationalist uprising in July 1936. Focused also on the efforts to recuperate the legacy of Benaiges, whose body was deposited in a mass grave and has never been identified, the film employs a dual timeline narrative, telling interconnected stories in the past and the present to shed light on pre-Civil War education and contemporary discourses and practices of historical …

At the time of her death, the artist Remedios Varo (1908–1963) left behind over 500 works of art, the majority of which were created in her adopted country of Mexico. Known for her meticulously crafted fantastical paintings, Varo underwent exile and displacement due to first the Spanish Civil War, and later World War II, which led her to relocate to Mexico, where she would create prolifically for the remainder of her life. This thesis analyzes the works of two Colombian authors, Diana López Zuleta and Sara Jaramillo Klinkert, who, as indirect victims of their father's murder, address impunity and its psychological effects through two genres: the chronicle and memoir. López Zuleta describes the process of mourning through the search for justice, while Jaramillo Klinkert explores mourning and the symbolic process of "killing the father" in a context of impunity. This study aims to determine the best ways for comedy-based TV shows to be translated so their cultural significance can be maintained while also becoming a piece of media that is enjoyed across linguistic barriers. Data was gathered from the TV shows Friends and La que se avecina and analyzed through comparison with one another. Analysis reveals both shows use unique techniques as a result of the specific challenges subtitle translators faced for the shows, but in general, focusing on one aspect of the translation over another would prevent the audience from enjoying the show. The Hispanic and Latino populations are the largest ethnic minority in California, and more than 10.4 million Californians consider Spanish their first language. However, English is the primary language in most educational and public spaces. This means Spanish-speaking communities have limited access to coastal ecosystems and learning opportunities about coastal areas impacted by climate change and extreme weather, which becomes a barrier to civic engagement, climate advocacy, and local decision-making. En contra de estereotipos racistas y asociaciones con primitivismo y retraso social, los creyentes de Santería, Espiritismo y Vudú Dominicano desarrollan un complejo entendimiento de las condiciones económicas de su región como parte de su fe.
