Uncommon Convergences: A Hemispheric And Comparative Approach To The Great Gatsby And Pedro Páramo, Ariel Jade Santos 2015 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Uncommon Convergences: A Hemispheric And Comparative Approach To The Great Gatsby And Pedro Páramo, Ariel Jade Santos

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Over the past thirty years, American literary scholarship has shifted focus away from a national approach centered on the United States to a hemispheric methodology that includes all of the countries within this hemisphere. As scholars begin to break down the once iron-clad borders that stood between the American canon and the authors of our hemispheric neighbors, new opportunities have arisen for literary exploration. As an original contribution to this field of scholarship, my thesis project uses a hemispheric and comparative methodology to identify and examine the manifestations of reification and patriarchy in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925) …

As of July 1, 2013, the latest census figures indicate that there are approximately 54 million Latinosliving in the U.S. (US Census Bureau, 2013). Tributo A El Largo Adiós De Raymond Chandler En El Bandido Doblemente Armado De Soledad Puértolas, Paloma Pérez Valdés 2015 Technological University Dublin

Tributo A El Largo Adiós De Raymond Chandler En El Bandido Doblemente Armado De Soledad Puértolas, Paloma Pérez Valdés

Books/Book Chapters

"Unos Seres Nacen Para Vivir": Un Análisis Psicosocial De Nada, Nathan Douglas 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

"Unos Seres Nacen Para Vivir": Un Análisis Psicosocial De Nada, Nathan Douglas

Honors Projects

Winner of the first Premio Nadal in 1945, Nada, the first published work of then-unknown author Carmen Laforet, has remained a captivating, yet elusive work of Spanish literature. Since its very publication, readers, critics, and even censors have debated the true emancipatory message (or lack there of) within the pseudo-autobiographical, confessional work. While the majority of critics maintain the novel’s characterization as a feminist, female bildungsroman, dissenters cite traces of palimpsestic ennui mediated by the novel’s complex narrative schema as reason to believe otherwise. This critical reading of Nada seeks to shed new light on these debates through …

Order Of Acquisition: A Comparison Of L1 And L2 English And Spanish Morpheme Acquisition, Kyle A. McFerren 2015 Liberty University

Order Of Acquisition: A Comparison Of L1 And L2 English And Spanish Morpheme Acquisition, Kyle A. Mcferren

Senior Honors Theses

This paper examines the order of acquisition for grammatical morphemes in Spanish and English first and second language learners. Brown’s first morpheme order study, conducted in 1973, laid the foundation for what would become one of the most common types of study conducted within the field of second language acquisition. The four orders of acquisition relevant here are examined and compared in order to support the roles of salience, morphophonological regularity, complexity, input frequency, and native language transfer in first and/or second language acquisition. The conclusion is that these five determinants work interdependently in determining the difficulty of acquiring a …

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

Translation specialists Esther Allen, Mary Ann Caws, Peter Constantine, Edith Grossman, Nancy Kline, Burton Pike, Damion Searls, Karen Van Dyck and Alyson Waters respond to the TQC question:

“Lost in translation”; “Found in translation”: Are these just useless commonplaces or are they indicative of something relevant to your own practice?

Between Confession And Realism: Lack, Vision, And The Construction Of Identity In Rafael Arévalo Martínez’S Una Vida And Manuel Aldano, Maria Spitz 2015 South Dakota State University

Between Confession And Realism: Lack, Vision, And The Construction Of Identity In Rafael Arévalo Martínez’S Una Vida And Manuel Aldano, Maria Spitz

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

The present study explores the relationship between generic ambiguity in Una vida (1914) and Manuel Aldano (1922) by the Guatemalan Rafael Aróvalo Martínez, and the Darwinian/Spencerian discourse with which the narrator attempts to construct an identity that will grant him a legitimate speaking subjectivity in the face of his inability to adapt to the changes in the Spanish American letrado’s role within societies at the periphery of modernization. Through an analysis of the narrator’s development and the emerging relationships between sexuality, language, genre, and vision in Arévalo Martínez’s short novels, the reader will note the irresolute tension between confession and …

Finding (The Other) Juan Luis Martínez, Scott Weintraub 2015 University of New Hampshire

Finding (The Other) Juan Luis Martínez, Scott Weintraub

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

According to Chilean poet Juan Luis Martínez’s groundbreaking art object La nueva novela (The New Novel, 1977), “The universe is a phantom’s effort to become reality.”[1] In July 2014 I found that phantom. His name is Juan (Luis) Martinez and he is a retired journalist and aid worker for the International Committee of the Red Cross. This Swiss-Catalan writer currently resides in the Valais Alps, 200 kilometers from Geneva, and he had never read more than a passing reference to his Chilean double — which he largely ignored — until I first spoke with him on July 29, 2014.

A Corpus For Investigating English-Language Learners' Dialog Behaviors, Nigel Ward, Paola Gallardo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We are interested in developing methods for the semi-automatic discovery of prosodic patterns in dialog and how they differ between languages and among populations. We are starting by examining how the prosody of Spanish-native learners of English differs from that of native speakers. To support this work, we have collected a new corpus of conversations among college students. This includes dialogs between a nonnative speaker of English and a native, dialogs between native speakers of English, and Spanish conversations.

El Arconte Del Archivo: El Personaje De Urrutia Lacroix En Nocturno De Chile De Roberto Bolaño, Mariana Romo-Carmona

Open Educational Resources

Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon 2015 Purdue University

Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation meticulously traces and analyzes the behavior and motivations of Sancho Panza throughout El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha and Segunda Parte del Ingenioso Caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha. To date, seemingly all criticism of Sancho has studied him on the basis of aspects of a particular episode or of a selection of episodes. In contrast, the contribution of the current monograph is its sustained and methodical approach to analyzing him and his development by means of scrutinizing every motive that he reveals and every action that he performs. I assert and demonstrate that the co-protagonist, …

Religión, Género Y Contradicción: La Motivación De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Kendall Faris 2015 University of Lynchburg

Religión, Género Y Contradicción: La Motivación De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Kendall Faris

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Vicente Pagasartundua's Último De Los Mohicanos: A Racialized Dialogue, Thomas Genova 2015 University of Minnesota - Morris

Vicente Pagasartundua's Último De Los Mohicanos: A Racialized Dialogue, Thomas Genova

Spanish Publications

This article uses the translation history of North American James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 Last of the Mohicans to explore the place of race in nineteenth-century republican discourse as it circulated in the Atlantic World. Based not on Cooper's original, but on Auguste Defauconpret's 1826 French translation, le Dernier des mohicans, Vicente Pagasartundua's 1832 Último de los mohicanos, like many republican-oriented works in the early nineteenth century, was translated in Spain for a Spanish American audience. Traveling from pre-Jacksonian New York to Orleanist Paris to absolutist Madrid, Cooper's novel and its translations participate in a transnational conversation on the …

Estudio Y Transcripción Semipaleográfica De La Relación Del Descubrimiento Del Río De Las Amazonas De Gaspar De Carvajal (Ms. Bne Res/257), Gonzalo Páez 2015 University of South Florida

Estudio Y Transcripción Semipaleográfica De La Relación Del Descubrimiento Del Río De Las Amazonas De Gaspar De Carvajal (Ms. Bne Res/257), Gonzalo Páez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the account of the discovery of the Amazon River written by Gaspar de Carvajal in the sixteenth century. In his Relación del descubrimiento del famoso río grande que, desde su nacimiento hasta el mar descubrió el capitán Francisco de Orellana, Carvajal describes the nine-month journey in which Orellana and his men crossed South America from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. In makeshift boats, they traveled through the river that we now know as the Amazon. The fact that the river has kept the name of the mythical warriors of European classical culture shows how the …

Considering Triple Self-Portraiture In The Work Of María Izquierdo, Brooke Lashley 2015 University of Connecticut

Considering Triple Self-Portraiture In The Work Of María Izquierdo, Brooke Lashley

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

This paper looks to María Izquierdo’s paintings, Prisioneras (Prisoners) of 1936 and Sueño y presentimiento (Dream and Premonition) of 1947, as case studies for activating a theory of triple self-portraiture. The theory reflects how plurality arises in the singular or in single significations of the self and disrupts homogeneity in thinking about identities for the self and others within the genre of self-portraiture. In activating a theory of triple self-portraiture, I found three forms of the self in Izquierdo's works: the self as oppressed (the past); the self as oppressing (the current); and the self as an emancipator (future). Although …

Otra Vez El Mar Y La Psicología De Carl Gustav Jung, Ángela Martín Pérez

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

Crisis Masculina En Dos Cuentos De Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Lucía Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations
