For The Love Of Robots: Posthumanism In Latin American Science Fiction Between 1960-1999, Grace A. Martin
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
Posthumanism—understood as a symbiotic relationship between humans and technology—is quickly and surely becoming an inextricable part of daily life. In an era where technology can be worn as an extension of—and an enhancement to—our bodies, traditional science fiction tropes such as robots and cyborgs resurface and reformulate questions on critical aspects of human experience: who are we and what do our (imagined) technologies say about our world? Such questions are far more complex than they appear. Their answers should not come from one source alone, as humanness is experienced differently across time and cultural systems. In this sense, it is …

Benjamín Jarnés published two works: El profesor inútil (1926) and Paula y Paulita (1929). Antonio Espina is also responsible for two works: Pájaro pinto (1927) and Luna de copas (1929).
The dissertation is divided into five sections. The first chapter introduces the topic of avant-garde prose during the 1920s …

Largo Viaje En Breve. La Minificción De Max Aub, María Luisa Elío Y José De La Colina En El Exilio, Gonzalo Hernández-Baptista
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

For the Archpriest of Hita, covetousness is the root of all evil. Although from Hieronymus’ translation of the Bible onwards the notions of the sins of covetousness and avarice became interchangeable, this paper highlights both sins in the context of the commercial and urban development reached by the late medieval society at a moment when the sharp desire for worldly possessions acquired an unprecedented visibility. After briefly analyzing the examples of both sins in the Libro de buen amor in relation to the Augustinian thought that pervades the book, this paper focuses on the different shades of meaning and social …

The life of Che is an inspiration to all human beings who cherish freedom. We will always honor his memory” (“Speech by Nelson Mandela at the Rally in Cuba”). Por otro lado, Felix Rodriguez, el agente cubano de la CIA quien guió la misión de matar a Ernesto Guevara en octubre de 1967, rechazó esta interpretación reclamando: “Most people don’t know …

The purpose of this research project is to explore the perceptions and attitudes of past and current foreign language students regarding the relevancy of culture within foreign language education. The first portion of this paper contains a literature review from a variety of international research articles discussing the necessity, implementation methods, and assessment techniques for implementing culture within the foreign language classroom setting. While the research from the literature review emphasizes for researchers and educators the importance of including culture within the foreign language curriculum, very little research has been recorded regarding the perceptions and beliefs of foreign language learners. …

La Reconstrucción De Significado En Doña Perfecta De Galdós, Benjamin D. Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
Generally considered a thesis novel and a primitive example of the author’s incipient Realism, Benito Pérez Galdós’ Doña Perfecta (1876) is a much more nuanced narrative. While certainly in the vein of Spanish tendentious, or thesis, novels —Galdós censures the intolerance and ignorance of the Spanish countryside and offers up the protagonist, Pepe Rey, as an example of the values of European liberal progress that have the potential to save the nation— at the close of the narrative, the author does not conclude (as is usually held) that one option (thesis) is better than the other. Written at a time …

En Busca De La Autoría Dentro Del “Mal” En Estrella Distante De Roberto Bolaño, Andres Felipe Arroyave
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this thesis is to analyze and explain the relationship between the concepts of authorship and evil, and how they connect with one another in Roberto Bolaño’s Estrella distante. Through the research I have collected, I propose a dialogue linking the aforementioned themes with each other utilizing the theoretical framework of Adriana Cavarero and Roland Barthes among others. With Roland Barthes, I intend to examine the role of what he designates as “Author-Scriptor” and how this particular function manifests itself within the paratext of Estrella distante via the role of the reader. The paratext of this particular novel …

During Spring 2015 I undertook a curricular revision of UNL's fourth-semester Spanish course (SPAN202) with the objective of improving the materials to help the course better achieve its stated goal of moving students "away from knowledge about the language and expertise in using isolated skills into a practical and fluid use of the language in which [they] synthesize [their] isolated skills." As it existed at the time, in theory SPAN202 focuses on synthesis and helping students negotiate higher levels of discourse, but in practice it tended to get bogged down in a comprehensive grammar review. In reality, some grammar topics …
