The Construction Of A Transatlantic Subject: Family And Nation In "Sola" By María José De Chopitea, Valeriya F. Fritz 2017 Brescia University

The Construction Of A Transatlantic Subject: Family And Nation In "Sola" By María José De Chopitea, Valeriya F. Fritz

The Coastal Review

This article explores the articulation of exile identity in the novel Sola by María José de Chopitea published in Mexico in 1954. Until now, critics have approached this text as lacking ideological argument. I propose an alternative reading of the novel as an ideologically charged narrative that articulates the nation beyond state borders and in terms of a transatlantic bond between Mexico and the Spanish Republic. Sola creates space in the nation for Catalan female writers who were previously excluded due to both their gender and their status as political exiles and cultural minorities.

Educación, Escritura Y Memoria: Las Armas De La Alteridad Frente Al Discurso Oficial Y La Desmemoria En "Por El Cielo Y Más Allá", Emilio L. Ramon 2017 Universidad Católica de Valencia

Educación, Escritura Y Memoria: Las Armas De La Alteridad Frente Al Discurso Oficial Y La Desmemoria En "Por El Cielo Y Más Allá", Emilio L. Ramon

The Coastal Review

Por el cielo y más allá invites the reader to reflect upon populist discourses paving the way for discrimination and marginalization; especially those aimed at a different gender, ethnic group, national origin or even an academic sub-specialty. Those who were persecuted in the past are now the ones harassing, and use the ambiguity of words as their tool. Words, in turn, enslave but also help set the others free. The memories of those marginalized are perpetuated through education, letters, poems and songs. They oppose the official discourse and invite the reader to avoid monolithic discourses and embrace tolerance and diversity.

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish. Part Ii., Eva Núñez-Méndez 2017 Portland State University

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish. Part Ii., Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is a continuation of Part I, published in the previous volume of Estudios Hispanicos.

The evolution of the medieval sibilant phonetic system is crucial to understanding the origin of Castilian varieties on both sides of the Atlantic. It helps to distinguish varieties such as Andalusian Spanish, Judeo- Spanish, and trans-Atlantic Spanish, which constitute proof of many of the diachronic processes happening during and after the late medieval period. This study helps the reader understand the linguistic variations of the sibilants in the modem language, and explores the origins and different steps in their evolution; furthermore, it evaluates recent …

Singing Portuguese Nasal Vowels: Practical Strategies For Managing Nasality In Brazilian Art Songs, André Campelo 2017 University of Kentucky

Singing Portuguese Nasal Vowels: Practical Strategies For Managing Nasality In Brazilian Art Songs, André Campelo

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The articulation of Portuguese nasalized vowels poses some articulatory problems accompanied by negative acoustic effects for the performance of Brazilian art songs. The main objective was to find strategies that permit the singer to conciliate an idiomatic pronunciation of these vowels with a well-balanced resonance, a desirable quality in classical singing. In order to devise these strategies, the author examined sources dealing with nasalized vowels from varied perspectives: acoustic properties of vowel nasalization, phonetic and phonological aspects ofBrazilian Portuguese (BP), historical views on nasality in singing, and recent vocal pedagogy research. In addition to the overall loss of sonority, the …

El Lugar De La Memoria, Entre La Verdad Y La Emoción: Re-Lectura Del Exilio Español De 1939, Jinmei Chen 2017 University of South Carolina

El Lugar De La Memoria, Entre La Verdad Y La Emoción: Re-Lectura Del Exilio Español De 1939, Jinmei Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on the testimonial character of the memory of Spanish exile of 1939, this project contributes to the study of cultural memory, in dialogue with other scholars who examine memory in contemporary works. It focuses on the intersection of exile and memory, and demonstrates that cultural memory means a connection between collective and individual memories. The three primary works examined in this project are conceived before, during and after each author’s exile respectively, thus, they together give a comprehensive view of the massive exile of 1939: Ramón J. Sender’s El lugar de un hombre (1939), Eulalio Ferrer Rodríguez’s Entre alambradas: …

Del Indigenismo Literario A La Novela De La Guerra Interna: Evolución Y Presente De La Narrativa Autóctona En El Perú, Edgar Luis Larrea 2017 University of South Carolina

Del Indigenismo Literario A La Novela De La Guerra Interna: Evolución Y Presente De La Narrativa Autóctona En El Perú, Edgar Luis Larrea

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyses the origin and evolution of the war narrative that was unleashed between the years 1980 and 2000 in Peru against the terrorist groups Shining Path and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA). My thesis is that the internal war novel is a resulting genre whose precursor was the pro-indigenista novels from the last decades of the 20th Century. Through literary analysis of the texts Los ilegítimos (1980) by Hildebrando Perez Huarancca, Un rincón para los muertos (1986) by Samuel Cavero, Retablo (2004) by Julián Pérez, and Abril rojo (2006) by Santiago Roncagliolo, I maintain that the internal …

The Underside Of Power: Reading The Fantastic In The Works Of The Chilean Writer José Donoso, Andrew Mark Corley 2017 University of South Carolina

The Underside Of Power: Reading The Fantastic In The Works Of The Chilean Writer José Donoso, Andrew Mark Corley

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the fantastic in the work of the Chilean author José Donoso (1924-1996). My thesis is that Donoso’s invocation of the fantastic in these narratives, subverts social constructs and power structures, specifically those associated with identity and sexuality. Via textual analysis, I argue that narratives such as “Santelices” (1956), El obsceno pájaro de la noche (1970), El jardín de al lado (1981), Naturaleza muerta con cachimba (1990), El lugar sin límites (1971), and Lagartija sin cola (2007) invite us to rethink how we see ourselves as we interact with his characters, often portrayed as tormented souls in hellish …

Narrar Lo Inenarrable: Trauma, Memoria Y Dictadura En Argentina, Gloria Yaneth Losada

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines new ways to think about postdictatorial memory, subjectivity, and cultural production. I explore memory discourses after the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina, compiled in three novels: El fin de la historia by Liliana Heker, La casa de los conejos by Laura Alcoba, and Diario de una princesa Montonera -110% verdad- by Mariana Eva Perez. My research concentrates on the possibility of postdictatorial cultural production being a constantly transforming space, in which the meaning of the dictatorial past is actively produced. Drawing from interdisciplinary theoretical considerations, I examine the relationship between memory and cultural production in postdictatorship …

Places/Non-Places: Galicia On The Road Of St. James, Eugenia Afinoguénova 2017 Marquette University

Places/Non-Places: Galicia On The Road Of St. James, Eugenia Afinoguénova

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This chapter offers a critical reconsideration of the theory according to which the Road of St. James (Camiño de Santiago) provides a site for ethnic identity-making capable of modernizing Galicia as a rural region. By definition, a route or itinerary—rather than a fixed site of any kind—provides a sequence of places to pass through, overlapping in an intriguing way with Marc Augé’s concept of “non-places.” Putting into a comparative perspective the measures that led to the consolidation of the Road as a trans-regional and transnational itinerary during the presidency of the conservative Partido Popular in Galicia between 1990 and 2005, …

Los Heroes Y Minerva En La Narracion Del Libro De Caballerias Cristalian De Espana De Beatriz Bernal, Lorena Ascencio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Los heroes y Minerva en la narracion del libro de caballerias Cristalian de Espana de Beatriz Bernal" adds to the advancement of knowledge due to the novelty of the topic and findings that have been incorporated throughout this research. This work analyzes the first two volumes of the Cristalian de Espana, which is one of the few novels of chivalry written by a woman in Spain during the 16th century. The main objective of this investigation resides in exploring the role of hero in relation to the classic hero portrayed in chivalry novels using Amadis de Gaula as a point …

Las Metamorfosis De Jordi Grau. Cine, Crítica Social Y Transformación Cultural En España (1962-1976), Hugo Pascual Bordón

Theses and Dissertations

This project focuses on the cultural transformation taking place in Spain in the period between 1962 and 1976, examined through the works of filmmaker Jordi Grau (Barcelona, 1930). This research invites the opportunity to assemble a cultural study that includes subjects such as national identity, realist film aesthetics, avant-garde films, and horror films. In addition, it observes some of Grau’s work in conjunction with gender studies and pop culture.

The thesis of this project is that Jordi Grau directed films encompassing different genres in a short period of time; all while assuming and adapting to the changes of his sociopolitical …

Cruzando Fronteras De Género(S): La Dislocación Del "Bildungsroman" Y La Construcción Política Del Sujeto, Silvia Roig 2017 Borough of Manhattan Community College-CUNY

Cruzando Fronteras De Género(S): La Dislocación Del "Bildungsroman" Y La Construcción Política Del Sujeto, Silvia Roig

The Coastal Review

This study shows that Aurora Bertrana’s novels subvert the traditional Bildungsroman and uses the techniques of the Novel of Female Development with (auto) biographical characteristics. The core of my analysis is in the friction, the disruption and the confrontation between the subject and the social system represented by the family, the school and the community. Bertrana’s novels underline that men, similarly to women, are under a strong pressure to adopt a specific role according to heterosexual norms. Bertrana’s work demonstrate that women writers, like men, can introduce social, cultural and political innovations and experiment with a new literature genre.

Flora Tristan’S Plural Identities In "Peregrinaciones De Una Paria": Challenging And Reproducing Existing Power Structures, Nancy Tille-Victorica 2017 Armstrong State University

Flora Tristan’S Plural Identities In "Peregrinaciones De Una Paria": Challenging And Reproducing Existing Power Structures, Nancy Tille-Victorica

The Coastal Review

This article analyses the ways in which Franco-Peruvian author Flora Tristan crosses the border of her plural identities in her famous travel book Peregrinaciones de una paria (1837). It especially looks at how she performs as a male in certain situations and how these are generally associated with her French identity. It also considers her identification as a woman and how it is linked to her Peruvian identity. These examinations reveal how Tristan actually redefines herself as a pariah and how her definition differs from that of outcast imposed on her in France prior to her departure for Peru.

What Rhyme Tells Us About The Status Of Homogeneous Diphthongs In Spanish, Juan Carlos Castillo 2017 University of Northern Iowa

What Rhyme Tells Us About The Status Of Homogeneous Diphthongs In Spanish, Juan Carlos Castillo

Faculty Work

This article addresses the status of homogeneous diphthongs in Spanish (those formed of two high vocoids, usually spelled iu or ui) to try to determine which vocoid acts as the syllable nucleus and which is the glide. It has generally been assumed that the order is glide-vowel (rising-like diphthong) but with little factual substantiation. A study of examples of rhyme from different ages in Spanish poetry and theatre in verse confirms the strong tendency for these diphthongs to act as rising-like.

Ansiedad Autorial Y Profesionalización De La Mujer Escritora En Las Memorias De María Martínez Sierra, Iker González-Allende
