Scripture In The Pastoral Letters Of The Provincial Councils Of Baltimore, Eric Vanden Eykel
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
In the pastoral letters of the provincial councils of Baltimore (1829-1849), a dramatic shift occurs in the way Scripture is employed as a source of authority; in the earlier letters, the role of Scripture is commanding and evident, while in the later, it is almost invisible. This article addresses each letter in turn, outlining the ways in which Scripture is employed to illustrate and reinforce the decrees of the provincial councils. The analysis suggests that Scripture's role in the 1829-1840 letters corresponds to the turbulent environment of the Catholic Church in America, especially in relation to Protestant nativist groups, and …

Pendekatan Hermeneutik : Kajian Terhadap Pemikiran Muhammad Syahrur Dalam Buku Al-Kitab Wa Al-Qur'an Qira'ah Muasirah., Ahmad Zaki Mubarok
Student Works (2010-2019)
Hermeneutic is originally derived from Greek term Hermeneuein, this term was Hermeneutikos which contains three basic meanings, which are, revelation, explanation and interpretation. These meanings came to existence as hermeneutic is applied in studying the Koran in the 19th century, but then tensions arise between Muslim scholars as to which definition is deemed appropriate. This study aims to expose the hermeneutic approach observed and applied by a Middle-East scholar, Muhammad Syahrur in his literature of al-Kitab wa al-Qur’an Qira’ah Mu‘asirah as well as to verify hermeneutic position as one of the theoretical commentary when discussing the Holy Koran. This study …

Sojourn Through Spiritual And Religious Tension: A Quantitative Study Of Intercultural Competence And Worldview Development, Naomi Ludeman Joy Smith
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In today’s increasingly interculturally connected world, educators are charged to prepare students to be productive global citizens. The dilemma is determining pedagogy to effectively support students through the intercultural challenges they face during crosscultural experiences. This quantitative study investigated intercultural competence and worldview development, based on Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, and the relationship to students’ reflective processing of their spiritual and religious tension during a semester study abroad. To explore this relationship, the researcher applied a quasi-experimental strategy of inquiry using nonrandomized control (N=56) and treatment (N=42) groups. The voluntary participants were undergraduate students from a liberal …

I Am Black And Beautiful: An Examiniaton Of The Black Coptic Church As The Manifestation Of Liberation Theology, Leonard Mckinnis

What does the Black Coptic Church have to offer the study of Black theology? This is the essential question this dissertation seeks to examine through a descriptive and constructive analysis. I submit the doctrinal formulation of black liberation theology is locatable within the Black Coptic Church, which was founded, and still boasts its largest membership in Chicago. This is the tradition that has informed my own faith background and has played a tremendous role in my earlier theological convictions. In fact, I was attracted to this tradition as a young child because it seemed to offer its adherents a sense …

Canon As An Act Of Creation: Giorgio Agamben And The Extended Logic Of The Messianic, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The ‘messianic’ is one of philosophy’s most appropriated religious terms, yet one apparently now bereft of its historical religious particularity. This essay thus explores a genealogical approach to the ‘messianic’ which might prove helpful in uncovering the reasons for this transformation from the theological to the philosophical, and what role, if any, theology still has in determining the meaning and usage of this term. Accordingly, this essay traces the term through the work of Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben. This development is made against the backdrop of another religious term which indirectly pervades the work of all three …
