Metal Plates And The Book Of Mormon, William J. Hamblin
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the past, critics of the Book of Mormon have attacked the alleged absurdity of the Book of Mormon having been written on golden plates and its claim of the existence of an early sixth century B.C. version of the Hebrew Bible written on brass plates. Today, however, critics almost universally admit that there are numerous examples of ancient writing on metal plates. Ironically, some critics now claim instead that knowledge of such plates was readily available in Joseph Smith's day. Hugh Nibley's 1952 observation seems quite prescient: "it will not be long before men forget that in Joseph Smith's …

Three essays by Hugh Nibley, all the papers presented at the 1993 F.A.R.M.S. annual symposium, other important temple papers, a keynote address by Elder Marion D. Hanks (former president of the Salt Lake Temple), striking illustrations by Michael Lyon (who illustrated Nibley's Temple and Cosmos)-these features and more make Temples of the Ancient World: Ritual and Symbolism one of the most significant volumes ever published on the temple. Never has one book contained so many original contributions by LDS scholars to our understanding of ancient temples and their modem counterparts.

Facsimile 2 of the Pearl of Great Price is perhaps the most enigmatic aspect of the revelations and translations of Joseph Smith. In a paper recently delivered at the F.A.R.M.S. brown bag seminar (available on the order form), Michael D. Rhodes discussed numerous advances over the last two decades in our understanding of Egyptian materials that shed light on Facsimile 2, the Joseph Smith Hypocephalus. The paper contains a transcription, a transliteration, and a translation of the text, plus background on the nature and significance of hypocephali in ancient Egypt and a commentary on specific details of the Joseph Smith …

Evidence For Tents In The Book Of Mormon, John L. Sorenson
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
One of the minor points made in recent criticisms of the Book of Mormon is the claim that there is no evidence of a tent-making or tent-using tradition in Mesoamerica and no available material for making the tents that the Book of Mormon mentions. Actually, Mesoamericanist literature makes it clear that tents were in regular use by Aztec armies at the time of the Spanish conquest, and there is good reason to suppose that they were used by other peoples and in earlier times (including Nephite times) in Mesoamerica.

As those who have read much Brigham Young know, the combination of this pioneer prophet's insight, articulateness, and candor is little short of stunning. Nibley calls him a "monumental figure," perhaps (after Joseph Smith), the most prominent mind of his century.

Assisted by a grant from the Foundation, Carl L. Johannessen, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of Oregon, is now in India with an assistant searching for sculptured images of sunflowers and other American crop plants. Their earlier studies documented that images of maize from the New World had been carved on temple sculptures in India dating to medieval times, centuries before the Spaniards and Portuguese could have carried the plant to Asia after A.O. 1500, as scholars commonly suppose (Johannessen and Parker, "Maize Ears Sculpted in 12th and 13th Century A.O. India as Indicators of Pre-Columbian Diffusion," Economic …

Revisiting The Land Of Jerusalem Via The Dead Sea Scrolls, Gordon C. Thomasson
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
For over 160 years, beginning at least with the 1833 publication of Alexander Campbell's Delusions, countless critics have claimed that the Book of Mormon's use of the phrase "land of Jerusalem" was a major error and proof that the book was false. They especially criticized the use of this phrase in reference to the place where Christ would be born. That phrase was not used in the Bible nor in the Apocrypha. Therefore, the critics concluded, it was an example of Joseph Smith's ignorance and evidence that he had tried to perpetrate a fraud. (For a thorough overview of …

A recently published collection of essays purports to examine the Book of Mormon using the latest scholarly tools and information. The authors of New Approaches to the Book of Mormon: Explorations in Critical Methodology assert that such scholarship shows the Book of Mormon is not of ancient origin, that it was written, not translated, by Joseph Smith in the nineteenth century and reflects that time and that time alone.
