Who Will Do The Good Works?: The Troubling Case Of Secularization And The Failure Of The Welfare State In England And Perú, Gabrielle Anna Schust
Honors Theses
This study examines the contribution and impacts of the social service works done by nuns in the UK in the 1950s and 1960s, and in Perú within the last five years. Specifically, it investigates the relationship between nuns as providers of social services and other providers such as the government. Drawing on existing literature on theories of secularization, and a close examination of the historical evolution of the British and Peruvian welfare state apparatuses, this study contextualizes the social service work of nuns in contemporaneous social, economic, and political circumstances. It finds that the population of nuns is on a …

Religious Influence On The French Campaign Against Korea Of 1866, Sophie Hargrave
Honors Projects
The French Campaign against Korea in 1866 was a relatively minor and unknown conflict in the course of both French and Korean history. However, it offers valuable information about the religious beliefs and value systems that defined the governmental systems of both countries, because it was the French response to the execution of several French Jesuit priests by the Korean government. Korea was largely influenced by three religions in the 19th century: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shamanism. France had a rich history of Catholicism and a wealth of Jesuit missionaries traveling abroad. The Confucian background of Korea, specifically, influenced its …

A Quasi-Experimental Study Of Socio-Economic Effects Of Social Enterprise Vocational And Education Training Programs In Myanmar, Trisha Bailey
Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations
Sustainable economic development is a challenge in bottom of pyramid (BOP) communities, such as those in Myanmar, where people live in subsistence conditions. Contributing factors are the lack of vocational training and education available for BOP community members. The UN and the OECD are rallying the organizations around the world, including social enterprises, to address the challenge of increasing sustainable economic development. Social enterprises are businesses that address social and environmental challenges while creating economic profit. Some social enterprises offer vocational and education training (VET) in the BOP communities in which they operate. The problem addressed by this study is …

Born-Again On Sundays: Exploring Narratives Of Belief And Performances In A Belizean Methodist Church, Katharine Serio
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
If you are only at church services on Sunday and do not actively practice your religious faith every day, are you “born again” every day? Reverend Rebecca Lewis of Wesley Methodist Church in a small town in Belize preaches active participation in the church and encourages her congregation to attend all religious events, pray rigorously, and read the Bible actively, but how does the congregation listen to her and react to her sermons? “Born-Again on Sundays” is an ethnographic account that draws on anthropological theories of belief and vernacular religion, performance and narrative, and poverty and reflexivity to explore the …

Adolescent Spiritual Formation: Practical Theology As A Filter For Youth Ministry, Jeremy Smith
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
There seems to be a disconnect between the practice and scholars of youth ministry. Historically, the practice of youth ministry has been overly concerned with method, creating multiple approaches, each with its own inherent shortcomings. Responding to this overemphasis on method, scholars of youth ministry have argued for a more theological framework, assuming that the problem lies within a lack of theological education among youth ministry practitioners. In 2001 youth ministry scholarship made a case to place the field of youth ministry under the discipline of practical theology in hopes of grounding the practice of youth ministry in theology. Over …
