The Tabernacle And Contextual Worship, Craig Keener 2012 Asbury Theological Seminary

The Tabernacle And Contextual Worship, Craig Keener

The Asbury Journal

Christians today sometimes debate the propriety of contemporary worship styles. Examining features of Exodus's tabernacle in light of cultures surrounding ancient Israel offers one biblical model for contextual worship. These features reveal that this model was relevant to its cultural setting Some contextual elements fit Israel's setting merely out of necessity or expediency. Other elements employ existing forms, sometimes even from non-Israelite religious practices, to communicate a point intelligible within that cultural sphere. Still other elements show striking contrasts with surrounding cultures, contrasts highlighted all the more conspicuously by the aforementioned similarities. Noticing which elements are similar and which elements …

Anticipating Change: Missions And Paradigm Shifts In Emergence, Sam Law 2012 Asbury Theological Seminary

Anticipating Change: Missions And Paradigm Shifts In Emergence, Sam Law

The Asbury Journal

As our global community is in an unprecedented period of rapid change, missiology, being a study of crossing boundaries, plays a critical pathfinder role in anticipating, participating and mediating the change process, for change itself is a temporal boundary. Failure to do so in the past has left the Church and other groups in a position in which they lag change, and have been marginalized and considered irrelevant. Emergence theory is introduced as a new model, in place of Kuhn's pyramid of causality, to describe how change itself has changed, as networks are now the opinion leaders. As well, Emergence …

Interdependent Church Planting Among The Urban Poor: A Case Study With Living Bread Ministries In Southern Brazil, G. Patrick Hubbard II 2012 Living Bread Ministries

Interdependent Church Planting Among The Urban Poor: A Case Study With Living Bread Ministries In Southern Brazil, G. Patrick Hubbard Ii

Great Commission Research Journal

This case study will highlight the work of Living Bread Ministries. I will detail our seven-year journey of beginning LBM, building interdependent partnerships with indigenous leaders, and planting eight churches in the favelas within the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil. In addition, I will discuss how these partnerships have led to planting churches and to establishing a Brazilian-led church planting ministry which shares the vision and focus of LBM. Through this organization, Brazilian individuals and churches are joining us to plant churches among the urban poor in Brazil and beyond. Finally, I will share some theological principles that are …

Intergenerational Church Splits, Eunice Hong, Richard L. Starcher 2012 Glory Church of Jesus Christ

Intergenerational Church Splits, Eunice Hong, Richard L. Starcher

Great Commission Research Journal

Generational and cultural differences between the first- and second-generation Korean American church leaders have caused division, anxiety, and tension. Though nearly all immigrant churches recognize the difficulties of embracing different generations and cultures, the lack of attention has resulted in frustration, bitterness, and ultimately, separation of the church. This article explores key factors contributing to church splits in multigenerational Korean-American churches in the greater Los Angeles area. Research participants included seventeen second-generation Korean-Americans. While they were from different churches and various denominations, all participants were involved in a church split. Data was collected through open-ended, semi-structured interviews. A careful analysis …

New Directions In Transformational Development, Stephen Offutt 2012 Asbury Theological Seminary

New Directions In Transformational Development, Stephen Offutt

The Asbury Journal

How does theology and theoryinfonn evangelical international development initiatives? The present article answers this question by reviewing the creation and growth of the international development industry, by outlining the dominant theory in evangelical development today, and by pointing to possible future directions. It argues that Transformational Development, currently the dominant evangelical development paradigm, has played a critical role in evangelical development theory and practice. But there are weaknesses to the theory. New voices, especially Wesleyan voices, are needed to shape evangelicalism's response to poverty in the 21st century.

Developing A Discipleship Ministry For Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In The West Central Korean Conference, Jae Sun Kim 2012 Andrews University

Developing A Discipleship Ministry For Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In The West Central Korean Conference, Jae Sun Kim

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Purpose. The purpose of this Ministry Focus Project document was to develop a theoretical and practical framework for implementing a discipleship ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the West Central Korean Conference in South Korea and ultimately to cultivate a consciousness of discipleship among Adventists. The worldwide Seventh-day Adventist denomination is growing, but it seems that Adventist churches are failing in the area of discipleship. Making disciples needs to be an important part of our Adventist culture. A discipleship curriculum would help the pastors and members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Korea to become mature, committed, reproducing witnesses …

A Discipling Strategy For Multi-Church Districts In Zambia, Vanny Munambeza Munyumbwe 2012 Andrews University

A Discipling Strategy For Multi-Church Districts In Zambia, Vanny Munambeza Munyumbwe

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Despite the exponential numerical growth of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Zambia, there are noticeable evidences that many in the church still struggle to maintain consistency in their faith commitments. This means that the church’s great emphasis on evangelistic efforts that lead people to accept Christ must be balanced with a matching emphasis on helping them to walk with him in daily life. Yet the Zambia Union Conference lacks a sufficient and contextualized discipling strategy for both new and longtime members. The purpose of this project is to address this need by developing a biblical and tri-focal discipling strategy …

Developing And Implementing A Domestic Violence Intervention Strategy In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Evans Nwachukwu Nwaomah 2012 Andrews University

Developing And Implementing A Domestic Violence Intervention Strategy In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Evans Nwachukwu Nwaomah

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Increasingly Seventh-day Adventist church families in the Port Harcourt area of Rivers Conference are experiencing domestic violence. During ministerial meetings, pastors express their growing frustrations and concerns about family quarrels which sometime result into physical attacks and such attacks then escalate beyond common understanding.

Method. This exploratory study utilized a survey questionnaire administered to 377 participants, ages 18 years and above, attending Seventh-day Adventist churches in PortHarcourt, Nigeria. The instrument for this research was adapted from the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus, 1979) and the National Violence Against Women Survey (NAVAW) (Tjaden & Thonnes, 2000). The CTS is a 39-item …

Avaliacao Da Revista Do Anciao Com O Fim De Melhorar Sua Eficacia Na Preparacao De Anciaos Para O Ministerio, Paulo Roberto Pinheiro

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problema.

A Christian Servant Leadership Model And Training For The Adventist Church In France, Olivier Rigaud 2012 Andrews University

A Christian Servant Leadership Model And Training For The Adventist Church In France, Olivier Rigaud

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. French history (the French Revolution) has shaped a country considered as one of the most secular in the world. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in France is profoundly affected and challenged by this environment. With 11,617 members among over 65 million French in 2010, the penetration ratio is very low (0.0185%) and a deep malaise is felt in the French churches. Reports indicate a lack of consecration, internal conflicts, discouragement of isolated churches, a lack of vision, and spirituality in decline. Today, the Adventist Church is unknown, despite its efforts in communication and visibility. Many change efforts have also been …

Optimizing A Full-Time Music Ministry Team For A Church Planting Project In The Northern Asia-Pacific Division, Dong Hee Shin

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Despite the support of the music ministry of the Golden Angels (GA), a full-time music ministry team of the Northern Asia-Pacific Division (NSD) for the Pioneer Mission Movement (PMM), a church planting project of the NSD, PMM missionaries request changes be made to the ministry of the Golden Angels be optimized to meet the needs.
