During this period, the status of Muslims as a “community migrating from Central Asia” changed to the name of an “ethnic minority” firmly established in China. This makes Islam in America appears in so many faces. One of the big moments of the history of Islam in America is the immigrant wave from Middle East which created new domination amongst American Muslims. This paper discusses one of the prominent figures from that era whose influences are big enough at that time and can still be seen today in America: Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. The researcher used a library study …

Endowment Banks And Their Significance In Islamic Law (Traditional And Modern), Bashar Al-Ajl

Al Jinan الجنان

Endowment in Islam is one of the charitable and rewarding deeds and has a great impact on community service, and the solidarity among its members, leading to the growth of charitable institutions. Endowment also contributes to the economy of countries and institutions, so it benefits them with the revenues from which they spend on their operating expenses. Economic, Social, Political And Psychological Factors Of Janissary Weakness And Decendence 1512 - 1826, Ali Omar

Al Jinan الجنان

The Janissaries turned from a protective army for the Ottoman State, and the source of its power, to a source of its corruption, weakness and competition, so that they directed and aimed their weapons, with which, they achieved victory over the enemies, to the chests of the Sultans and the Grand Vizier, and they permitted the killing of the innocent peoples, and subjected the markets to burning, looting and plundering, which afflicted the state with blood and weakness and caused the conquests to cease. This backwardness was a natural result of several economic factors, including the Jews› deception of the …

Media Coverage Of Muslims: Introduction And Overview, Erik Bleich, A. Maurits Van Der Veen

Arts & Sciences Book Chapters

Existing research largely concurs that coverage of Muslims is negative. Yet this masks how much remains unknown. In particular, there has been no clear or consistent way to gauge precisely how much negativity is present in stories about Muslims. This chapter introduces a systematic way to assess the tone of articles and discusses how this allows for answers to six important questions about coverage of Muslims. The chapter also outlines the structure of the book and summarizes the key findings. In particular, it argues that coverage of Muslims is strikingly negative by every comparative measure examined.

Risk Or Contra-Political Correctness With Distrust Towards Muslims In The U.S. Military, Benedict Uzoma Iheanacho 2022 Walden University

Risk Or Contra-Political Correctness With Distrust Towards Muslims In The U.S. Military, Benedict Uzoma Iheanacho

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Muslims are viewed by many in the United States with great anxiety and distrust. This mistrust encompasses Muslims in the U.S. military, especially since 9/11. The trust deficit has implications to U.S. security and military readiness in a global threat environment. Whereas the notion of Islamophobia has generated significant literature in modern public policy, there is a dearth of research on public perception towards Muslims serving in the U.S. military. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of non-Muslim U.S. military personnel on the mistrust towards Muslim military personnel in the post-9/11 era. Theories of …

Mental Health Attitudes And Knowledge Among Shia Muslims In America, Fatima Z. Hussain 2022 University of Central Florida

Mental Health Attitudes And Knowledge Among Shia Muslims In America, Fatima Z. Hussain

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Mental health has received more attention and stigma associated with it has decreased over time in the United States. However, subpopulations have differing views on mental illness since cultural factors can shape perceptions of and influence access to mental health information. Previous studies have investigated such cultural factors among Sunni Muslims (the majority sect of Islam) and less so among Shia Muslims (the minority sect). To address this gap, two research questions were investigated in this project: (1) What are the mental health attitudes among Shia Muslim adults in the United States, and (2) How much mental health knowledge or …

Ecofeminist Theology In Islam: The Process And Application Of Synthesizing Rosemary Radford Ruether’S Insights, Islamic Feminist Aspirations, And Ecological Concerns, Nayawiyyah U. Muhammad

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The focal point of this dissertation is theoretical and applicatory in scope; it incorporates three distinct areas of scholarship, the ecofeminist theology of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Islamic feminism, and Islamic environmentalism towards the primary goal of making a case for the construction of an ecofeminist theology in Islam. Specifically, I seek to consolidate Islamic feminists and environmental theories and approaches while utilizing and bringing to bear the insights and critiques of Ruether. This is accomplished through a process of synthesis and application. The intersection of environmental destruction and gender disparity is the hallmark claim of ecofeminism and thus, I begin …

For The Birds: The Mystery Of God’S Grace Through Attar’S The Conference Of The Birds, Matthew David Alvarado 2022 Bard College

For The Birds: The Mystery Of God’S Grace Through Attar’S The Conference Of The Birds, Matthew David Alvarado

Senior Projects Spring 2022

As a lover of Birds, I have a fascination with Attar of Nishapur's The Conference of the Birds, and what the poet's lyrical work says about Sufi theology. Questions of death, the afterlife, obliteration of the self in the presence of free will and predestination, all through the story of one hundred thousand birds as well as the fall of Iblis. What is God's grace and how does the death of Attar add value to the words he wrote? I explore how the nature of God as the unveiled Beloved plays into these questions and the essential contradictions that underpin …

Text Contention Behind Sharia Supervisory Board Reports: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Ari Ermawati, M Nur A Birton, Irfan Tarmizi, Muhammad Muttaqin

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Sharia Supervisory Board Reports (SSBRs) have an interest in convincing the public that entities supervised by a Sharia Supervisory Board (SSB) are sharia-compliant and reflective of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) practices. Failure in public convincing will be detrimental to Islamic banks’ reputation as well as the SSB’s image and credibility. This study aimed to critically assess how the SSB produces reports as texts to persuade the public using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). We analyzed four SSBRs from two Islamic Commercial Banks (ICBs) and two Islamic Business Units (IBUs) owned by other ICBs as well as interviews for data triangulation. We …

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma 2021 Washington University in St. Louis

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations

This thesis argues that an autochthonous mosque architecture exists in China, and this historical type adequately serves as a reference for contemporary mosque building in southeastern China in light of how it responded to the Chinese cultural and urban contexts. Many Hui Muslims and architects in this region refuse to consider historical mosque architecture built in traditional Chinese architectural style as their cultural references in constructing new mosques, as they believe that the traditional Chinese architectural language is insufficient to express their identity as Muslims. Instead, they prefer a collection of symbolic architectural elements to be used in mosque architecture …
