Russian Orthodoxy And The Challenge Of Modernity: The Case Of Archimandrite Makary, 2010 Butler University
Russian Orthodoxy And The Challenge Of Modernity: The Case Of Archimandrite Makary, Paul Valliere
Paul Valliere
The challenge of modernity for Orthodoxy as experienced by Archimandrite Makary (Mikhail lakovlevich Glukharev) is presented here through a brief exposition of Makary's career, its successes, failures and inner tensions. Particular attention is given to Makary's role in the struggle for a Russian-language Bible.

The Modernity Of Khomiakov, Paul Valliere
Paul Valliere
In the case of Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, identifying the traditional element is a difficult task for a reason which becomes more obvious as one becomes better acquainted with their work: Khomiakov and the other Russian religious philosophers were not traditional thinkers.
Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, 2010 Butler University
Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, Chad M. Bauman
Chad M. Bauman
This study of dalit Christians in colonial North India suggests that women who converted to Christianity in the region often experienced a contraction of the range of their activities. Bauman analyzes this counterintuitive result of missionary work and then draws on the work of Saba Mahmood and others to interrogate the predilection of feminist historians for agents, rabble-rousers, and gender troublemakers. The article concludes not only that this predilection represents a mild form of egocentrism but also that it prevents historians from adequately analyzing the complexity of factors that motivate and influence human behavior.
Prophezei: A Reformation Model For Interpretation Of Scripture, 2010 Olivet Nazarene University
Prophezei: A Reformation Model For Interpretation Of Scripture, Carl M. Leth
Faculty Scholarship – Theology
The topic of this meeting – The Future of Scripture – is not new. The nature of the authority and interpretation of Scripture has been a recurrent question throughout the history of the church. Ulrich Zwingli’s creation of Prophezei in 1525 provides a useful historical precedent and point of traditional reference. At the very least, Zwingli’s Prophezei calls out to us that the way forward should involve an integrative synergy that values critical scholarship, affirms the spiritual character of Scripture and its interpretation, embeds the task of interpretation within the church, and purposefully envisions the end of Scriptural interpretation in …
Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, 2010 Saint Louis University
Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, George Faithful
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Contrary to popular belief, there have often been monastic sisterhoods and brotherhoods in Protestantism. In Germany, Möllenbeck, Loccum, and Marienberg all contained cloisters that embraced the Lutheran Reformation but retained much of their monastic practice. That such groups are relatively unknown may reflect the ambivalence of those in positions of power toward potential holdovers from Catholicism. Protestant monasticism has never been normative; therefore, its occurrence might best be understood as an implicit critique of the mainstream confessions. For the purposes of this paper I will not define monasticism as a vague and flexible lifestyle of contemplation and asceticism, as have …
Why Study Mary?, 2010 University of Dayton
Why Study Mary?, François Rossier
Marian Library Faculty Presentations
Simple as the title "Why Study Mary?" may sound, Father François Rossier situates Marian studies in the broader context of Scripture and the Christian tradition. Making special reference to the Marianist tradition and its intimate connection with the University of Dayton's spirit and vision, he sees in Mary the "origin of theological reflection." It is a reflection that is documented not in a book, but in Mary's person. Being the "first theologian," she has a "concretizing function." She makes Jesus "tangible, concrete, accessible to our senses," but she also helps us "to get a sense of God's action and presence …

An Analysis Of The Teaching Aids Provided For Sunday School Teachers In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo
An Analysis Of The Teaching Aids Provided For Sunday School Teachers In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Kevin Douglas Whitehead
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching is, and always has been, important in the work of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As one of the auxiliaries of the Church, the Sunday School has made an ongoing effort to provide effective teaching aids for its teachers in order to improve instruction in the Church. This work documents and examines change in principles of gospel teaching over the course of a century. By comparing teaching aids provided for Gospel Doctrine teachers in different time periods with guidelines found in the scriptures and words of modern prophets this work seeks to increase understanding of themes …
Dis-Manteling More, 2010 University of Richmond
Dis-Manteling More, Peter Iver Kaufman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, winner of the prestigious 2009 Booker-Man award for fiction, re-presents the 1520s and early 1530s from Thomas Cromwell's perspective. Mantel mistakenly underscores Cromwell's confessional neutrality and imagines his kindness as well as Thomas More's alleged cruelty. The book recycles old and threadbare accusations that More himself answered. "Dis-Manteling" collects evidence for the accuracy of More's answers and supplies alternative explanations for events and for More's attitudes that Mantel packs into her accusations. Wolf Hall is admirably readable, although prejudicial. Perhaps it is fair for fiction to distort so ascertainably, yet I should think that historians will …

Revisiting The Empty Tomb: The Early History Of Easter, Daniel A. Smith
Faculty Publications
The Gospels disagree on what happened at the empty tomb, on who was there, and on what they saw or heard. The fact that our earliest written witness to the risen Christ, Paul, says nothing of the empty tomb has long provoked the question, what did early believers know about Easter, and when did they know it? Daniel A. Smith seeks to get behind the theological and apologetic concern to "prove" the resurrection and asks, where did the accounts of the early tomb come from, and what purpose did they originally serve? He shows that Paul is a valuable witness …
Towards An African Inculturation Biblical Pneumatology: A Response To The Rise Of Neo-Pentecostalism In Tanzanian Christianity, 2010 Luther Seminary
Towards An African Inculturation Biblical Pneumatology: A Response To The Rise Of Neo-Pentecostalism In Tanzanian Christianity, Faith Lugazia
Doctor of Philosophy Theses
In this dissertation, 1 seek to lay the groundwork for developing an African inculturation of biblical pneumatology relevant to the Tanzanian context. The Neo- Pentecostal phenomenon is a strong reality in Tanzania today. Neo-Pentecostal churches and groups are mushrooming, emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit and drawing on the heritage of African spirituality and worldview. Many mainline Protestants, including Lutherans, participate and worship in these churches and groups, yet they maintain their formal membership in their mother churches. This could be due, in part, to the fact that Lutheran theology and teaching in Tanzania has tended to pay little …
