Under One Umbrella: Multiple Communities, One Church, Timothy Jacob Gillespie
Doctor of Ministry
It is my claim that the need for alternative communities within established church structures is not only growing, but is also paramount to the continuation of the gospel of Jesus Christ into the post-Christian, post-Modern world. These alternative communities often take the form of "emerging" worship services, Young Adult services, and "churchwithin- a-church" expressions of worship and community. They are seen in large, medium, and small church settings; as such, we see many of the same problems to varying degrees. The search for relevance has led us to these communities, and this author sees them as valid expressions of faith …

Anglican Eucharistic Liturgy: A Church-Planting Hope For The Post-Christian Culture Of The Pacific Northwest, Anthony D. Kriz
Doctor of Ministry
The question addressed in this dissertation may be stated as follows: 1tJ1l1at hope does Anglican Eucharistic Liturgy bring to the future of church planting within the increasingly post-Christian urban centers of the Pacific Northwest? According to our research of a sample zip code of inner-city Portland, Oregon, only one in four people self-identify with Christianity and less than one in five attend church. Churches are shrinking and closing rapidly and our culture is increasingly defined as post-Christian. The plans of the recent church-planting efforts are losing ground. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but there is significant evidence that the Anglican …

Talking And Not Talking: Sexual Education And Ethics For Young Women Within The Evangelical Movement In America, Kate Sargent
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In this paper I intend to discuss the ways in which sex, sexuality, and the female body are treated in the discourse within the Evangelical movement, particularly with regard to teenaged and young girls. I will focus on the way young women are talked to about sex, and how they are socialized and educated to regard sexuality and gender. I will spend most of my time with the popular literature aimed at young women, analyzing the underlying theology and theory at work. I will extrapolate, through the use of the (admittedly limited) data regarding sexual activity among young Evangelicals, including …

Book Review: Tight Fists Or Open Hands: Wealth And Poverty In Old Testament Law, Roger S. Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Excerpt: "David Baker fills a lacuna in scholarship with this theological interpretation of wealth and poverty in OT law. Under thematic categories, such as property rights and just lawsuits, Baker outlines the pertinent passages from biblical texts within the context of ancient Near Eastern legal collections. After a whirlwind survey, Baker acknowledges some commonalities between biblical and ancient law regarding economic concerns. But he emphasizes that the biblical law codes ultimately derive from the covenantal relationship with YHWH. Thus, biblical law collectively attests to higher standards of economic ethics than its ancient Near Eastern counterparts."

Excerpt: "As a Modernist follower of radical individualism, Virginia Woolf is thought to be antipathetic to religious thought; Woolf’s own spirituality, however, is certainly more complicated than most critics have allowed, especially in light of the influence of her aunt, Caroline Emelia Stephen, a well-known Quaker mystic and writer who rejected the established church in favor of a less traditional version of Christianity. The intellectual relationship between niece and aunt has been little discussed; aside from Jane Marcus’s “The Niece of a Nun: Caroline Stephen and the Cloistered Imagination” and Alison Lewis’s “A Quaker Influence on Modern English Literature: Caroline …

Discovering The Inventory Of Spiritual Gifts Of Bethel Baptist Church Of Rock Hill, Inc., Rock Hill, South Carolina, Robert Joseph Crawford
Doctor of Ministry Projects
The hypothesis of this ministry project is that Bethel Baptist Church does not lack any spiritual gifts that are needed for contemporary Christian ministry. The challenge is which church members possess which spiritual endowments. To discover the church's spiritual gifts inventory, we used Bugbee's spiritual gifts assessments and gave opportunities for the expression of the gifts that were uncovered. The ministry experiment revealed clusters of spiritual gifts in the Bethel faith community. They were the gifts of faith, helps, mercy, and teaching. Ministries formed were prayer team ministries, praise and worship leaders, and a teacher's preparedness team.

Since 1959, the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LC-MS) has been training Christian educators entering the profession that eventually came to be called the Director of Christian Education (DCE). The chapters of this book compile topics of interest to both practicing Christian educators and those studying to become Christian educators. Some chapters summarize research about DCEs and the DCE experience while others share years of personal experience as a DCE within a congregation.
